Stalled Indo-Pak peace process benefiting terrorists: Gilani

Islamabad, September 05: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Saturday asked India to return to the composite dialogue process, contending that the delay in resuming the stalled peace talks would only benefit terrorists.

“We seek relations (with India) on the basis of equality. It is our resolve not to let our soil to be used for terrorism. Therefore, we want the composite dialogue to be resumed because the terrorists are benefiting from the situation,” Gilani said.

Pak troops kill 55 suspected militants in Khyber

Islamabad, September 05: Pakistani security forces Saturday killed at least 55 militants in two districts of the country’s troubled northwestern tribal region bordering Afghanistan, officials said.

Paramilitary Frontier Corps troops aided by helicopter gunships destroyed the headquarters of the pro-Taliban fighters in Khyber tribal district and destroyed seven vehicles, a statement said.

The operation in Gogrina and Sanpal areas of Tirrah valley in the district killed at least 35 militants and injured several, the Frontier Corps said.

Swat, Malakand almost cleared of militants: Zardari

Islamabad, September 05: Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has said that militants have been “almost cleared” from the northwest of the country and were on the run, a news agency reported on Saturday.

“Militants are on the run as Swat and Malakand have almost been cleared of them. This huge success in the battle for the integrity of Pakistan has been made possible by the sacrifices of our armed forces and the people,” Zardari said in his message to the country on the eve of Defence Day Sep 6.

Hopes fade for missing after Indonesia quake

Jakarta, September 05: Rescuers in Indonesia continued to search on Saturday as hopes faded for dozens of people missing after a major 7.0-magnitude earthquake, an official said.

The quake, which struck off the south coast of Java on Wednesday, triggered a landslide that buried dozens of people in the village Cikangkareng, 130 kilometres (80 miles) south of Jakarta.

“The quake has killed at least 65 people. The search for dozens of victims continues although their chance of survival is slim,” disaster management agency spokesman Priyadi Kardono said.

‘Terror’ witness can sue senior Bush official: US court

Washington, September 05: Former US president George W Bush’s top law enforcer John Ashcroft could be sued and held personally responsible for the wrongful detention of a US “terror” witness, a federal court of appeals said.

Placing responsibility on the shoulders of US officials in the Bush administration, and specifically Ashcroft, who was attorney general at the time, the judge at the ninth circuit court of appeals in Boise, Idaho ruled on Friday in favour of Abdullah al-Kidd, an American citizen who brought the complaint.

Mastermind of Ingush leader attack killed: Reports

Moscow, September 05: The militant described as the mastermind of an attack that badly wounded the head of Russia’s Ingushetia region has been killed after a shootout with Russian forces, reports said on Saturday.

Rustam Dzortov was suspected of planning the June 22 car bomb attack on Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, the former paratroop commander appointed by the Kremlin to bring control to increasingly violent Ingushetia.

Australia ‘secretly supported’ East Timor independence

Sydney, September 05: Australia decided to support East Timorese independence many months before a referendum in 1999, but publicly maintained the line that it should remain part of Indonesia, a report said on Saturday.

In an interview for a book about modern Australian politics, former conservative prime minister John Howard said he had believed East Timor’s independence was “inevitable”.

But “one had to be careful about handling that publicly,” Howard told author Paul Kelly.

Urumqi Communist Party chief sacked: Report

Urumqi, September 05: China’s official Xinhua News Agency says the Communist Party chief of the western city of Urumqi has been fired after five people died in protests over a series of hypodermic needle attacks.

Xinhua did not give a reason for the Li Zhi’s removal on Saturday. But protesters have called for his resignation, amid anger at poor security in the city.

The needle attacks, that authorities have blamed on Muslim separatists, have unnerved the city amid fears of a renewed outbreak of communal violence after ethnic rioting two months ago left nearly 200 people dead.

One more swine flu death in Pune; city toll at 34

Pune, September 05: One more person died of swine flu here, taking the death toll in the viral infection in the city to 34, health officials said on Saturday.

Sandeep Dayne (35) died last night at a private hospital where he had been undergoing treatment since August 28.

Meanwhile, six fresh cases of the viral infection have been detected in the city, worst hit by the pandemic.

Pune branch of Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced that it would hold workshops to train doctors in rural areas to handle suspected swine flu cases.

Mumbai, September : Bollywood megastar Akshay Kumar, who recently starred with Sylvester Stallone in “Kambakkht Ishq”, owes his success to touching the feet of his parents every morning.

“I would say my success lies at the feet of my parents because that’s been my biggest strength and that’s what we Hindus believe.”

Aiken storms into European Masters lead

Crans-sur-sierre, September 05: South Africa’s Thomas Aiken fired a second round seven-under par 64 to take the clubhouse lead at the European Masters on Friday.

But Wales’s Bradley Dredge, whose last tour victory came in 2006, is only one behind thanks to a second round 65 and is nine under for the tournament.

Ballack’s quit shock to crisis-hit Chelsea

London, September 05: German playmaker Michael Ballack has landed another blow on crisis-hit Chelsea by revealing that he might quit at the end of the season.

Just hours after the Blues were banned from signing any new players until January 2011, Ballack has threatened to leave the club even shorter on bodies.

The German international midfielder, who will be 33 this month, is in the final year of his 130,000 pound-a-week Chelsea contract.

CPM Politburo meets to discuss organisational problems

New Delhi, September 05: The CPI(M) Politburo on Saturday began a two-day meeting to finalise a document to deal with its organisational problems which led to its rout in the recent polls in its strongholds of West Bengal and Kerala.

The purpose of the meeting is to give final touches to amend and strengthen its “rectification document” that had been prepared several years ago.

The meeting is being attended by all top leaders barring West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who is not well, and the party’s Kerala Secretary Pinarayi Vijayan.

Obama unveils measures to spur U.S. retirement saving

Washington, September 05: U.S. President Barack Obama announced measures on Saturday to encourage Americans to save more money for retirement, a move the White House said would put the economy on a stronger footing in the future.

Obama, in his weekly radio and Internet address, said the government would enact rules making it easier for small businesses to let workers automatically enroll in individual retirement accounts and 401(k) retirement plans. The measures do not require congressional approval and most will take effect immediately.

Raiders kill 20 as political tensions mount in south Sudan

Sudan, September 05: Tribesmen killed 20 people, including a chief and his family, in an attack on a south Sudan village in the latest violence in the oil-producing territory, the South Sudan army said on Saturday.

An army spokesman accused former foreign minister Lam Akol, now the leader of a breakaway political party, of arming the attackers from his Shilluk tribe. Akol dismissed the accusation.

The Shilluk tribesmen attacked the village of Bony-Thiang in Nile state on Friday morning, killing civilians of the Dinka tribe, the army said.

5,000 copies of Jaswant Singh’s book sent to Gujarat

New Delhi, September 05: The publishers of former BJP leader Jaswant Singh’s controversial book on Jinnah have rushed about 5,000 copies to Gujarat within 24 hours of the state high court setting aside the ban on it by the Narendra Modi government.

“There has been a tremendous demand for the book. We have sent about 5,000 copies of ‘Jinnah: India, Partition, Independence’. The books have been sent to Baroda, Ahmedabad and other cities of the state,” R K Mehra, chairman of Rupa and Company, the publishers of the book told reporters.

Four tremors in 3 weeks: Panic grips Northeast

Guwahati, September 05: Panic has gripped people in the Northeast with four earthquakes rocking the region in the past three weeks, including a 5.9 magnitude tremor on Friday, the biggest in the past nine years.

“Everyone is asking the same question – are we prepared to deal with a major disaster? We have not seen any urgency on the part of the government to activate its disaster management cells,” said Arun Mahanta, a doctor.

Caught copying, class XII girl jumps to death

Coimbatore, September 05: A class XII student, who was allegedly caught copying, died in hospital on Friday due to injuries she sustained after jumping off the terrace of her three-storey school building here.

Minutes before jumping off the roof on Thursday, Vandana Anburaj, a student of SBOA Matriculation School at Chokkampudur, wrote a note on her palm, possibly meant for her teachers, which said: “Sorry everybody. Give everyone a chance to change.”

Ghaziabad protest turns violent; police open fire in air

New Delhi, September 05: A clash between police and local residents of a Ghaziabad residential colony on Saturday got uglier and violent resulting in police firing and long traffic snarls.

Angry protesters blocked the NH-24 resulting in a traffic jam stretching as long as 15 kms. The road from Lal Kuan till UP Gate is said to be blocked.

Commuters using the highway are said to be caught in the jam since 7.00 am making it impossible to reach places like Vaishali and Indirapuram.
