Sulabh adopts ‘miracle baby’ with protruding heart

New Delhi, September 05: The 10-day-old baby who has undergone a rare surgery here after he was born with a protruding heart has found support from the NGO Sulabh International.

Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Thursday operated upon the infant and pushed the heart inside the body after creating space for it. The boy, whose parents are poor, is now recovering at the hospital.

Sulabh founder Bindeshwar Pathak Saturday said he will look after the post-operative care of the baby and give a job to his father Chander Majhi in his organisation.

CII to send business delegation to Tajikistan

New Delhi, September 05: The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) will send a business delegation to Tajikistan during the two-day visit by President Pratibha Devisingh Patil which starts Monday.

According to CII, the current bilateral trade between India and Tajikistan is $415 million (Rs.2,075 crore), with India’s exports at $163 million (Rs.815 crore) and imports at $252 million (Rs.1,260 crore).

Srither loses in pre-quarters of world archery

Kolkata, September 05: National compound men’s champion Chinna Raju Srither was the lone Indian to move into the pre-quarterfinals before losing to the top seed in the 45th world archery championship at Ulsan, South Korea, Saturday.

The Indian Army archer lost to the top seed Reu Wilde of US 113-116 at the Ulsan International Archery Field, according to information received here.

Deep depression crosses Orissa coast

Bhubaneswar, September 05: The deep depression formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal crossed the Orissa coast Saturday evening and moved toward West Bengal, weather officials said.

“The deep depression has moved in a northerly direction and lay centered at about 50 km north of Digha (in West Bengal),” the Bhubaneswar meteorological centre said.

“The system is likely to move further in a northwesterly direction. Under its influence thundershowers are likely to occur at most places over Orissa,” it said.

Mona Wasu has winning stamina

Mumbai, September 05: Mona Wasu has emerged winner in the popular reality show Iss jungle Se Mujhe Bachao.

Mona who was being considered to be an underdog was adjuged winner in the grand finale of the reality show on Friday.

Mona is a television starlet and has recognition for acting in so far in television soaps as Miilee, Radha Ki Betiyan kuch Kar Dikhayengi.

She grabbed the crown of “Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao,” beating the other two finalists, 32-year-old TV actor Chetan Hansraj and 30-year-old pop singer Anaida, by a narrow margin of SMS votes.

Indian riders left in the shade in Petronas Asia Road Racing

Chennai, September 05: Indian motorcyclists were given riding lessons as Thailand’s Decha Kraisat (SuperSports 600cc) and Indonesia’s Hokky Krisdianto (Underbone 115cc) took pole positions in their respective classes in the Petronas Asia Road Racing Championship here Saturday.

The difference in levels of riding was no more apparent than in the Underbone class where all the three Indians – T.K. Vishwanath, Harry Sylvester and Karthik – occupied positions just above the last placed P.D. Sigit of Indonesia on the 23-rider grid for Sunday’s double-header.

France, September 05: Amnesty International has called on the Sudanese Government to withdraw the charges against a woman journalist who risks 40 lashes for wearing trousers.

As a court in Khartoum prepares to resume the trial of Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein, Amnesty International said the law used to justify the flogging of women for wearing clothes deemed to be “indecent” should be repealed.

Mother against daughter’s solo global sailing bid – report

Netherlands, September 05:The mother of Laura Dekker, the 13-year-old Dutch girl who wants to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world, says she is against the idea.

“As far as I am concerned, I wouldn’t let Laura go,” Babs Muller, who divorced Laura’s father Dick Dekker in 2002 and has not lived with her daughter since she was six, told the left-leaning newspaper Volkskrant today.

“Laura told me: ‘if you forbid me, you will ruin my life and I never want to see you again’,” Muller said.

South Korean wins second ITF title in three weeks

New Delhi, September 05: Second seed South Korean Young-Jun Kim clinched his second $10,000 International Tennis Federation (ITF) in three weeks here at the DLTA stadium beating Japanese Kento Takeuchi 6-3, 6-1 Saturday.

Bihar court issues warrant for Bal Thackeray’s arrest

Patna, Septemer 05: A Bihar court has issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray after he failed to appear before it in a case of allegedly making uncharitable and inflammatory remarks against residents of the state in his party mouthpiece Saamna.

Rakesh Pati Tiwari, the sub-divisional judicial magistrate in Ara, district headquarters of Bhojpur, ordered issuance of the warrant Friday after Thackeray failed to appear before him or send a lawyer representing him in compliance with the court’s July 7 order.

Tourists drown as lake ferry sinks

Skopje, September 05: At least 10 people are dead after a boat carrying mostly Bulgarian tourists sank on Lake Ohrid in southwest Macedonia.
The Iliden was carrying at least 50 passengers when it sank at around 11am (1900 AEST) on Saturday, said a police source.

No reason was given for the sinking of the vessel.

It was about 200m from the shore, the Macedonian news agency MIA reported.

Karnataka man held with four deer skins

New Delhi, September 05: A man from Karnataka was Saturday arrested here with four deer skins, Delhi Police said.

The special investigation team (SIT) arrested Vishal from Rohini in northwest Delhi.

Vishal is a resident of Hubli in Karnataka and works in an incense stick manufacturing factory there.

“Vishal along with his other associates, trapped and killed animals in the protected wildlife sanctuaries of Karnataka and he had come to the capital to sell the deer skins,” a police official alleged.

Illegal immigrant scratches big win

London, September 05: AN illegal immigrant who scored a big win with a lottery scratch card in Sweden has appeared on television to collect his winnings even though authorities have been trying to deport him.

Tesfaldet Tesloy, a 28-year-old Eritrean who has lived in the immigrant-friendly Nordic country for six years, won a tax-free prize of 1.2 million Swedish crown ($166,300).

Sweden’s attempts to deport the man have failed due to his country’s refusal to take him back.

Trade ‘a big part’ of Lockerbie release

london, September 05: Trade deals with Libya played a “very big part” in Britain’s decision to include the Lockerbie bomber in a prisoner transfer deal with Tripoli, a Government minister acknowledged in an interview.
Justice Secretary Jack Straw told Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper that trade and an oil exploration deal between BP and Libya were factors in deciding whether to make Abdelbaset Ali Mohmet al-Megrahi eligible for transfer to a prison back home.

22 killed in Macedonia boat accident

Skopje, September 05: At least 22 people died when a tourist boat sank Saturday in Ohrid Lake in southwest Macedonia, media reports said.
Initial reports said 12 people drowned and five were missing, but Macedonian A1 television later reported that 22 bodies had been recovered.

The television also reported that there were 74 people on board – 62 of them Bulgarian tourists on their way to the medieval monastery St. Naum. The vessel was licensed for only 43 people.

Sentiments damp at Indian equities markets

Mumbai, September 05: Sentiments at Indian equity markets remained damp this week though a key index rose 290 points Friday, after four consecutive losing days.

Chinese markets — which fell 6.74 percent at the beginning of the week — primarily contributed to the investor’s apprehension, sending bourses across the world southwards.

The 30-share sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) fell 233.22 points or 1.46 percent over previous Friday’s close and ended trade at 15,689.12 points.

BRIC nations demand greater say in global financial system

London, September 05: India, China, Russia and Brazil have opposed protectionism, while demanding greater say in the global financial architecture and equitable voting rights for emerging economies in institutions like the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

“Protectionism remains a real threat to the global economy and should be avoided, both in direct and indirect forms,” said a communique by the four countries, collectively referred to as BRIC economies.

Bana new head of Alcatel-Lucent R&D

Bangalore, September 05: Alcatel-Lucent has appointed Subhash Bana vice president in charge of its research and development (R&D) operations in India, the leading telecom equipment major said.

“As head of R&D operations, Bana will drive excellence in engineering performance across the carrier and applications software activities, including R&D service delivery, quality and innovation enhancing support to Indian customers,” the company said in a statement here.

Bana will also liaise with the business divisions to develop and execute products and solutions for emerging markets.

Agitating mob set bus on fire in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, September 05: A protest turned violent on the Ghaziabad highway number 24 when police lathicharged the agitating people.

The protest was being held against a government eviction notice for an unauthorised colony.

The violence erupted between the police and mob, when the crowd was demonstrating against the notice.

The crowd also obstructed the busy highway and set ablaze a bus in the Vijay Nagar area of Ghaziabad.
