Two students killed in separate incidents

Jamshedpur, September 06: Two students were killed in separate incidents here last night, police said today.

The deceased were identified as Maneendra(13) and Neeraj(18). Maneendra died when he fell from the fourth floor of his flat while playing.

In another incident, Neeraj, a B Com student of Coperative College, met his fate when he was returning after taking his exam.

He met with an accident and his motorcycle hit the road-divider, killing him on the spot.

Vijender wins, enters World Championship pre-quarters

New Delhi, September 06: Olympic bronze medallist and middle weight (75kg) top seed Vijender Singh started his campaign in style, beating Kazakhstan’s Azamat Belgibayev to enter the pre-quarterfinals of World Boxing Championships in Milan, Italy on Saturday.

The 23-year-old world number two, who was conferred the Khel Ratna award last month, defeated his rival 14-8. Vijender will take on Canadian Steve Rolls, who got the better of local favourite Luca Podda, on September 8.

Yemen rebels deny breaking truce

Sanaa, September 06: Yemen rebels on Sunday denied government accusations that they had broken a truce and said authorities were using humanitarian issues as a pretext to press ahead with attacks against them in the north of the country.

Yemen said on Saturday the northern rebels reignited fighting in Saada province by breaking a truce designed to allow access for humanitarian aid.

In August, a new wave of fighting erupted between rebel Shi’ite Muslims of the Zaydi sect and government forces trying to impose central authority. The conflict first began in 2004.

Ahmadinejad, Chavez unite against ‘imperialism’

Tehran, September 06Ahmadinejad and Chavez railed against the West, pledging to deepen their ties and stand together against the US and world powers the two perceive as imperialistic.

Chavez is on an 11-day tour that has taken him to Libya, Algeria, Syria and Iran. The leftist Venezuelan leader is also to visit Belarus, Russia and Spain in the trip he has described as a bid to build a “multi-polar world” and counter U.S. influence.

Israeli settlements ‘prompting third intifada’

Gaza, September 06: A senior Palestinian official says Israeli government is prompting a new “intifada” (uprising) among Palestinians by its settlement expansion in the West Bank.

Gassan Douglas, the Palestinian Authority official monitoring settler activity in the northern West Bank, said Israel is actually “declaring war on Palestinians by expansion of its settlements in the West Bank.” Syria’s SANA news agency reported on Saturday.

He says there are already four hundred-twenty five settlements in the region with a population of beyond half a million.

Federer, Djokivic fight through; Roddick dumped in New York

New York, September 06: Roger Federer and Novak Dkjokovic overcame niggles to advance while fifth seed Andy Roddick fell to a defeat against a rising American to exit the US Open in a third-round heartbreak loss Saturday.

Six held in Orissa for poaching

Bhubaneswar, September 06: Six people were arrested for attempting to poach deer in Orissa’s Bhitarkanika national park, a forest official said Sunday.
The six were arrested from Charchia village near the park, P.K. Behera, a senior forest official, said.

Eight nylon traps, two nets and two boats were seized from them which they were using to trap and kill deer. The official said the arrested men were sent to jail Sunday after a court rejected their bail plea.

Deodar revival project launched in Shimla

Shimla, September 06: The ‘Queen of the Hills’, as this town was fondly called by the British, is going in for massive plantation of deodars to boost the depleting green cover here.

The government plans to plant around 4,000 saplings of deodar in the capital town by encouraging people to take to the drive.

“We have launched the revival of deodar afforestation project to maintain the glory of this historic town as the deodar forest town of India. Under this campaign, around 4,000 deodar saplings would be planted across the town,” Forest Minister J.P. Nadda told IANS.

Irrespective of personal law, Indian can adopt child: Court

New Delhi, September 06: An Indian can adopt a child even though his or her personal law does not permit it, a Delhi court has said, giving hope to a Muslim couple who aspire to be the foster parents of an orphan.

“Indian citizens have a fundamental right under the Indian Constitution and under the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2000, to adopt an Indian child,” District Judge Pratibha Rani said.

Infrastructure companies’ tax expenses up: Assocham

New Delhi, September 06: Contrary to popular belief, tax expenses of companies with the infrastructure status have gone up by 90.3 percent, a survey released here Sunday said.

According to the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry’s (Assocham) Financial Pulse study, tax expenses for companies under the infrastructure status have gone up because of improved realisations.

This has contributed to better margins and improved bottomlines of such companies, thereby increasing their tax liabilities.

US keen on enhancing economic ties with India

New Delhi, September 06: Recession-hit US wants to enhance its commercial engagement with India, which along with other emerging economies is expected to contribute to the bulk of global economic growth.

US Trade Representative Ron Kirk, who was here last week for the WTO informal ministerial meeting, has chalked out plans to return to India next month, mainly for pushing bilateral trade, which is at USD 43 billion at present.

“I will be back to India in almost less than a month when we are going to engage much more thoughtfully on our bilateral relationships,” Kirk had said.

Spurt in infiltration from across LoC: Army

New Delhi, September 06: With winter not far away, Pakistan has increased attempts to push maximum number of militants across the Line of Control (LoC) into Jammu and Kashmir with 12 incidents recorded in July and August this year.

“There has been a spurt in the number of infiltration incidents in the last two months, with a dozen incidents recorded in July and August alone along the LoC,” Army officers said.

New tax pact will help India trace black money: Swiss govt

Switzerland, September 06: As India and Switzerland prepare to renegotiate the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement, the Swiss government has said it was confident that the pact would be finalised by next year and enable New Delhi to seek details about blackmoney stashed in banks there.

“Yes” was the emphatic answer of Switzerland’s Vice- President Doris Leuthard when asked whether renegotiating the treaty, which was signed in 1995, would enable India seek details of specific cases where tax evaders money was lying in Swiss banks.

Madhavan gets Rs.10 mn for small part in Jaya-starrer

Mumbai, September 06: R. Madhavan, who had opted out of Revathy Varma’s film “Aap Ke Liye Hum”, is back after he has been paid a whopping Rs.1 crore (Rs.10 million) for a small part in the women-centric film that has Jaya Bachchan, Ayesha Takia and Raveena Tandon in lead roles.

“But what to do? It’s very difficult to get male stars for female-oriented films. We’ve paid Maddy Rs.1 crore out of which he has already received Rs.25 lakh. He has already shot for five days with us,” Varma told IANS.

India to tell US about Pak inaction in 26/11 probe

New Delhi, September 06: Home Minister P Chidambaram begins an important four-day visit to the United States this week when he will discuss with the American establishment international terrorism and Pakistan’s inaction against perpetrators of Mumbai attack.

Chidambaram, who will begin the visit on Tuesday, will urge the American leadership to put pressure on Pakistan to take firm action towards dismantling of terror infrastructure in that country as well as prosecution of Mumbai attack accused, who are in Pakistan.

Nepal church blast mastermind caught

Kathmandu, September 06: More than three months after a bomb went off during mass at one of Nepal’s oldest churches, killing three women — two of them Indians, police Sunday arrested the mastermind who is the head of an outlawed Hindu militant organisation.

Ram Prasad Mainali, chief of the Nepal Defence Army, a shadowy outfit that had asked all Christians and Muslims to leave Nepal or face dire consequences, was caught with three associates from southeast Nepal.

The four men were said to be armed and were caught from Rajgarh between Jhapa and Sunsari districts in eastern Nepal.

Seek to develop strategic ties with India: Australia

New Delhi, September 06: Australia has ruled out uranium sale to New Delhi but is keen to develop strategic partnership and ensure that India becomes a “front-ranking” nation with which it has such ties.

Australian Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard said her country wants to build defence and security ties with India.

“We understand that energy security is important for India… (But) we have a longstanding position about uranium sales and nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT),” she said in an interview while explaining why Australia will not supply the nuclear fuel to India.

US soldier killed in Taliban attack in Afghanistan

Kabul, September 06: A US soldier was killed Sunday in a Taliban attack in eastern Afghanistan, the military said in a statement.
The soldier died one day after another US soldier was killed in the same region in a militant attack, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said.

There are more than 60,000 US soldiers as part of ISAF and a separate US-led coalition in Afghanistan. More than 20,000 US troops were deployed to Afghanistan this year as part of President Barack Obama’s new strategy to reverse the gains made by Taliban militants in the past three years.

Anti-terror cooperation tops Chidambaram’s US agenda

13 Delhi government hospitals have rape detection kits, court told

New Delhi, September 06: Thirteen government hospitals in the capital are now equipped with rape detection kits for victims of incest crimes as per guidelines issued by Delhi High Court, the Delhi Police has told the court.
Mukta Gupta, counsel for Delhi Police, contended before a division bench comprising Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and Justice Manmohan earlier this week that of the 20 hospitals of the Delhi government, 13 are equipped with Sexual Forensic Evidence Kits (SAFE) and seven more are in the process of doing the same.

Cong to go it alone in Bihar assembly by-polls
