With this win, Air India (Blue) have cemented their place in the Sep 8 finals.

Thousands of civilians flee battles in NW Pakistan

Peshawar, September 06: Thousands of civilians have fled Pakistan’s northwest Khyber tribal region where the latest military offensive killed 33 more suspected militants Sunday.

Pakistan is under intense U.S. pressure to crack down on insurgents along its border with Afghanistan, especially the lawless tribal belt where al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden is suspected to be hiding. The U.S. believes militants use Pakistan’s tribal areas as safe havens from which to plan attacks on Western troops across the frontier in Afghanistan.

“We have sent the photographs and details of slain militant Abu Jindal to Mumbai Police for investigation. We are in close touch with them,” a senior police officer said today.

Suspected LeT militant Abu Jindal was shot dead in Bathoi forest area of Mahore tehsil of Reasi district on Friday.

Lankan group behind SL cricket team attack: Pak

New Delhi, September 06: After suspecting an Indian hand in the terror attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team, Pakistani Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani on Sunday revealed that the attack may have been funded by the LTTE.

Speaking about the attack on Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore in March this year, Gilani said that he had received word from Sri Lankan authorities about the involvement of a Sri Lankan group.

Gilani also said that the admission came from none other than the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa during the duo’s visit to Libya recently.

Madonna reconciles with estranged brother?

London, September 06: Pop diva Madonna has reportedly reconciled with her estranged brother Christopher Ciccone a year after he published an expose of their life together.

The “Music” hitmaker was allegedly furious over Ciccone’s tell-all book, “Life With My Sister Madonna” last year, which lifted the lid on the star’s private affairs, reports celebrifi.com.

CPI-M to launch ‘rectification campaign’ soon

New Delhi, September 06: The two-day politburo meeting of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) that concluded here Sunday decided to prepare a draft document for its “rectification campaign” to inculcate in its cadres the “living culture based on communist values.”

The draft will be placed before the central committee meeting of the party to be held Oct 23-25, said a party communique.

The CPI-M has been searching for the reasons for its worst ever debacle in the April-May Lok Sabha elections with its tally falling to 16 seats from 43 in the 2004 elections.

New Delhi, September 06: Gold prices are likely to hit a new high of Rs 17,000 per 10 grams in next the 2-3 weeks due to rising demand from investors and a weak US dollar, analysts said.

The price of the precious metal reached a seven-month high of Rs 15,780 per 10 grams in the domestic markets on September 3. On the same day, it also touched an almost seven-month high of $999.5 an ounce (28.34 grams) in the global markets.

US killed Gen Zia-ul-Haq with Pak internal help

Islamabad, September 06: US and “internal powers” were behind the 1988 plane crash that killed General Zia-ul-Haq, who ruled Pakistan from 1978 till his death, a former Pakistani spymaster has claimed.

Imtiaz Ahmed, a former chief of the Intelligence Bureau, said the US collaborated with “internal powers” in Pakistan to assassinate Zia.

Ahmed, who also served in the ISI, has shaken up political parties with revelations of huge payments allegedly made by the Inter-Services Intelligence to strengthen the opposition to former premier Benazir Bhutto in 1990.

Chinese incursion into Indian Territory

New Delhi, September 06: In a fresh case of intrusion by Chinese troops, the Chinese troops entered 1.5 kms into Indian Territory.

The mandarin troops entered the Ladakh some 1.5 kms from the International border.

The Chinese also painted rocks red which could be an effort to lodge claim over the territory.

This is the fresh case in recent times as earlier; a Chinese helicopter had violated the Indian airspace.

The Chinese entered the Indian territory near Mount Gya, which is recognised as international border by both the Nations.

Former Punjab CM Brar passes away

Punjab, September 06: Former Punjab Chief Minister and ex-Haryana Governor Harcharan Singh Brar died at his native village here today at the age of 87 after protracted illness.

A veteran Congress leader, Brar also held the post of Orissa Governor for six months in 1976.

He breathed his last in Sarai Naga village in Punjab’s Muktsar district and would be cremated tomorrow, family members said.

Brar, who played an instrumental role in creation of Muktsar district, is survived by his wife Gurbinder Kaur, son Kanwarjit Singh, an MLA, and daughter Kanwaljit.
