Man arrested for raping daughter for years

Bhubaneswar, September 07: A man in Orissa’s Bhadrak district has been arrested for allegedly raping his daughter for over a decade and forcing her to undergo several abortions over the years, police said Monday.

Bishnumohan Panda, a 58-year-old resident of Rajgurupur village, was arrested after his daughter complained to the police Saturday with the help of villagers, said Damodar Mohapatra, in charge of the police station in the village.

Railway exam in regional language

Kolkata, September 07: Candidates can take examinations for jobs in the railways in regional languages as well as Urdu, Railway Minister, Mamata Banerjee, said here on Sunday.

The options available now are Hindi and English.

Ms. Banerjee did not attend the day’s programme to flag off three new trains from the city, by remote control from Kolkata station. Trinamool Congress chief whip in the Lok Sabha, Sudip Bandhopadhyay, did the formalities.

Former nuclear pariah India seeks uranium stocks

New Delhi, September 07: Energy-starved India, armed with permission to buy atomic fuel from around the world after the end of a three-decade ban, is courting new partners alongside old friends in its global hunt for uranium.

The strategy, spelt out in a government paper published last week, will see New Delhi reach out to Mongolia, Namibia and Kazakhstan besides traditional allies like Russia in its search for the ore that is refined into nuclear fuel.

1.5 lakh people hit by heavy rain in West Bengal

Kolkata, September 07: Nearly 1.5 lakh people were affected by storms and heavy rain in the southern districts of West Bengal, including areas severely affected by cyclone Aila three months ago. About 14,000 houses were destroyed.

The rain, accompanied by gales, was caused by a depression over the Bay of Bengal, officials said here on Sunday.

The State government has sanctioned Rs. 4 crore to provide relief,said Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta.

Tarpaulin sheets and clothes were also distributed. Embankments were breached at 19 places , he said.

First-ever visit by an Indian President recognises Tajikistan’s critical

Dushanbe(Tajikistan), September 07: President Pratibha Patil arrived here on Sunday on the second leg of her two-nation tour of Russia and Tajikistan.

There is considerable buzz around her visit with the Indian side describing it as a part of its “high-level engagement of all Central Asia Republics.” President Patil is the first Indian head of State to visit Tajikistan, and will be the only foreigner so far to have attended functions to mark its national day on September 9.

Congress in a Catch-22 over YSR successor

New Delhi, September 07: The Congress is in a Catch-22 over finding a successor to Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who died in a chopper crash on Wednesday.

Party general secretary Digvijay Singh was sent to Hyderabad on Sunday even as Congress leaders said the high command would comment on the situation only after the mourning period is over.

Bomb blast kills three in Nepal

Kathmandu, September 07: Three people were killed and seven others injured Sunday in a bomb blast in western Nepal, a media report said.

The blast took place in Malakheti village in Dhangadhi area of Nepal’s western Kailali district, Nepalnews.com reported. Three of the injured were in serious condition at a hospital.

Chief district officer Shiv Prasad Nepal said the explosion occurred Sunday evening in the courtyard of the house of Harka Bahadur Mohta.

The police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Panchayat by-elections postponed

Kakinada, September 07: East Godavari Collector and district election officer Gopalakrishna Dwivedi said here today that the September 9 by-elections for the posts of panchayat sarpanch of Uppumilli in Kajulur mandal and member ward two of Nedunuru village of Ayinavilli mandal have been postponed owing to the demise of former Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy. Under the revised schedule announced by the state election commission, he said, these by-elections now would be held on September 16.

Digvijay Singh console the family members of YSR

Hyderabad, September 07: Congress AICC General Secretary Digvijay Singh today consoled the family of former Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy who killed in a chopper crash on September 2.

Mr Singh who arrived here today, visited the residence of the late Chief Minister at camp office and met the family members and expressed his grief over the death of charismatic and people’s leader.

Later, talking to newsmen he said he had come here only to console YSR’s family as he did not attend the funeral.

Thirteen die of swine flu

New Delhi, September 07: As many as 13 people died of the A (H1N1) influenza in the country in the past 24 hours taking the toll to 131. So far this is the highest number of deaths reported in a day .

As many as 93 confirmed cases of swine flu were also reported from across the country.

With this the cumulative number of flu cases has touched 4,738.

The highest number of deaths was reported from Karnataka (7), followed by Maharashtra (3) and Andhra Pradesh (2) . One death was also reported from Gujarat.

20 crew rescued in another ship sinking in Philippines

Manila, September 07: A Panama-registered cargo vessel with 20 South Korean and Filipino crew members on board sank off the eastern Philippines as the death toll in the sinking of a domestic passenger ferry rose to nine, the coast guard said Monday.

All four South Korean and 15 Filipino crew members of the MV Hera were rescued Monday off Eastern Samar province, 660 km south of Manila, coast guard spokesman Lieutenant Armand Balilo said.

“They are all in a lifeboat which is being towed by a fishing boat,” he said.

GE says confident of winning China engine contract

Shanghai, September 07: General Electric Co (GE.N) is confident about winning contracts to supply engines to China’s big aircraft project, the company’s China chief said on Monday.

“The fact that we are on the first plane…gives us confidence. But the thing that gives me most confidence is that I am very sure of our aircraft engine product. I think we have the best product,” GE’s China President Mark Norbom told Reuters on the sidelines of an industry event.

Rajasekhara Reddy, who died in a helicopter crash on September 2, Union Minister for Law and Justice and AICC general secretary in charge of Andhra Pradesh M. Veerappa Moily said on Sunday.

Talking to The Hindu after meeting Congress president Sonia Gandhi here, Mr. Moily said the discussions were routine. But he did not deny that they touched the Andhra Pradesh issue.

Attack on cricketers funded by elements in Sri Lanka: Gilani

Islamabad, September 07: The terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore was funded by elements from the island nation, said Pakistan Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani, based on information given to him by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

“In Libya, the Sri Lankan President told me they had clues that the attack on the [Sri] Lankan team was funded from Sri Lanka. I told him if he was willing to share these clues, we could send our officials from the Interior Ministry,” Mr. Gilani told journalists here.

Role of state actors in 26/11 not ruled out, says Chidambaram

New Delhi, September 07: India has never ruled out the involvement of state actors in Pakistan in the Mumbai terror attacks despite Islamabad’s contention to the contrary, Home Minister P. Chidambaram has said.

“We have never ruled out [involvement of] state actors. Although Pakistan has maintained that only non-state actors were involved, we have never ruled out the involvement of state actors and we have never accepted this distinction between state actors and non-state actors because both operated from Pakistani soil,” he told NDTV.

Attacked in Ahmednagar, US citizen dies of injuries in hospital

Pune, September 07: Sixty-one year old Eric Nadel, a US citizen, breathed his last on Sunday morning at 11.30 am after struggling for his life for 11 days. Eric and his wife Heather (59) — both followers of spiritual guru Avatar Meher Baba, had sustained severe head injuries after being brutally attacked by robbers in the early morning hours of August 26 at their isolated bungalow at Arangaon village, 9 km from Ahmednagar. The couple has been staying on the trust’s residential premises at Arangaon for 35 years. Heather is a trustee of the Avatar Meher Baba Trust in Meherabad.

Spat over YSR’s successor turns ugly

Hyderabad, September 07: The battle for a successor to YS Rajasekhara Reddy became ugly on Sunday when party workers publicly insulted senior leaders unwilling to make YSR’s son, YS Jaganmohan Reddy, the chief minister.

Clear battle lines also emerged with reports that many YSR loyalists in the earlier council of ministers were unwilling to work under short-term chief minister K Rosaiah. Delhi steps in to clear Andhra mess

Hyderabad, September 07: YS Rajasekhara Reddy’s son Jaganmohan on Sunday tried to dissociate himself from the campaign to install him as the Andhra Pradesh chief minister, with the Congress high command making it clear that the party was not going to be forced into taking a decision.

Jaganmohan urged his supporters to go by the decision of the party leadership after senior Congress leaders told him that the campaign was doing his prospects more harm than good.
