Schoolgirl, 14, dies after Cervarix cervical cancer vaccine injection

Australia, September 29: Australia parents have been told not to panic after a teenage girl died in the UK hours after being given the controversial cervical cancer vaccine.

The 14-year-old schoolgirl who died in hospital after receiving the Cervarix injection is the first reported death from the vaccine.

The batch of the vaccine used has been quarantined to test whether it is faulty or contaminated during production or distribution.

In Australia Cervarix has been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration for use in females aged 10 to 45.

LaRhonda Marie McCall ‘locked son in closet for years’

Washington, September 29: A Woman has been arrested after allegedly locking her son inside a house for nearly five years.

Police in the US say the 14-year-old boy spent most of his time locked in a bedroom closet inside the Oklahoma City home, the Associated Press reports.

He told police that he had been trapped at the home ever since his mother moved them both from New Jersey to Oklahoma 4 1/2 years ago.

He reportedly said that he spent most of his time inside a closet and the door had been blocked with a ladder or some furniture before he managed to get it open.

‘Vengeful teen chops off dad’s hands’

Taiwan, September 29: A Taiwanese teenager has been arrested after chopping off his father’s hands, allegedly to avenge years of physical abuse, a report said today.

The victim, identified only by his surname Fan, was in critical condition at a hospital in central Taiwan’s Miaoli county after his son hacked at his wrists more than ten times while he slept early on Monday, the Apple Daily said.

The 17-year-old showed no remorse, saying he could not care less if his father survived the attack, according to the report.

Maya govt to SC, no fresh construction at memorial site

New Delhi, September 29: The Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh has denied any fresh construction activities at the site of Rs 2,600-crore memorials being constructed for BSP founder Kanshiram and other Dalit leaders in Lucknow.

In a fresh counter affidavit filed before the apex court here on Monday, the state government submitted that whatever construction was being carried out was only with regard to certain structures which are not the subject matter of dispute in the Allahabad High Court.

Minor argument leads to murder, rioting in Chandigarh

Chandigarh, September 29: An argument over a petty issue led to the murder of a youth followed by incidents of violence in a suburban area of the city Tuesday, police said.

According to the police, Tej Bahadur, who worked in a milk dairy in Indira Colony in Manimajra suburb, was stabbed by Babloo, a resident of the same area, after an argument late Monday night. He was admitted at the government hospital in Sector 16, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Banerjee steps in to help stranded air passengers

Kolkata, September 29: Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday stepped in to bail out some of the passengers stranded due to the Air India pilots’ strike.

She arranged for special trains on various routes and asked union Minister of State for Shipping Mukul Roy to run an additional service of the Shipping Corporation of India on Wednesday to bring back the air passengers stranded in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Shiney Ahuja is not a rapist says lawyer

Mumbai, September 29: Actor Shiney Ahuja may not be a saint, but he is not a rapist either, his lawyer said in the Bombay High Court on Tuesday pleading for bail.

Arguing before the High Court, after sessions court rejected Shiney’s bail plea in the rape case, his lawyer said that evidence indicated a consensual sexual intercourse between the actor and the complainant girl.

“I (Shiney) am not a saint in a sense, but not a rapist,” said advocate Shirish Gupte, representing Shiney.

‘Time for NCP to merge with Congress’

New Delhi, September 29: A senior Congress leader here on Tuesday said time had come for the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to merge with it since the reason for the formation of the NCP was no longer relevant.

“The issue is no longer relevant and the existence of NCP thus has no purpose. This is the time for the NCP to merge with the Congress,” the leader told requesting anonymity for he is not entitled to publicly discuss strategy issues.

L&T will bid to build navy’s second submarine line

New Delhi, September 29: Engineering and Construction giant Larsen and Toubro Tuesday said it will bid for the Indian Navy’s second line of conventional submarines.

The company had built India’s largest shipyards, near Chennai and in Gujarat, which had the capacity to build all types of naval construction, including submarines, L&T chairman and managing director A.M. Naik told reporters here.

“We will be bidding for the navy’s second line of conventional submarines,” he said.

Delhi roads to be built up with international technology

New Delhi, September 29: All roads in the national capital will be built up using international technology before the beginning of 2010 Commonwealth Games (CWG), Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Rajkumar Chauhan said Tuesday.

“Special attention is being paid to the roads which are around the places where the games would be held,” Chauhan said, while inaugurating the work using “recycling and micro surfacing method” in south Delhi.

Sri Lanka to recruit Tamils in police force

Colombo, September 29: The Sri Lankan government will recruit Tamils in the police force, an official said on Tuesday.

There had been an overwhelming response from Tamils to join as constables in northern Jaffna, police spokesman Nimal Mediwaka told reporters.

“We received more than 6,000 applications for 500 vacancies,” Mediwaka said.

He said no police recruitment was possible in Jaffna since 1979 due to the Tamil insurgency.

ALLAH inscribed on meat in Malaysia

Kaula Lumpur, September 29: A family of Malaysian villagers became the talk of the town after they found the word Allah inscribed on meat bought from the local market, the country’s press reported on Tuesday.

Housewife Rashadah Abdul Rani, 57, said her son bought the meat from a market in the village and it was her daughter who discovered the inscription.

“I cut the meat into six pieces and soaked them in the water. It was my daughter, who was helping me in the kitchen, who saw the word “Allah” on all six pieces of the meat,” Rani told reporters at her house in Kampung Alur Gunung.

Wockardt gets US nod for Tamsulosin capsules

Chennai, September 29: Pharma major Wockhardt Tuesday got the US Food and Drug Administration’s (USFDA) tentative approval for marketing Tamsulosin Hydrochloride capsules.

Tamsulosin is being used for treating non-cancerous enlargement of prostate, technically called benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Tamsulosin is the generic name for the brand Flomax, developed by Japanese drug major Astellas and marketed in the US by Boehringer Ingelheim.

Mumbai, September 29: Vodafone has been recognised as the most admired mobile service brand online in India followed by Tata Indicom and Aircel, a survey said.

A pan-India survey conducted by Drizzlin Media, a Branding 2.0 consultancy that audited over 1,600 relevant conversations of the 7,000 conversations’ sampled around India’s top 10 telecom brands shows that Reliance Mobile emerged as the least admired brand.

The survey was conducted over ten telecom brands including Airtel, Vodafone, Idea Cellular, Tata Indicom, Aircel, Reliance, BSNL, MTNL, Spice and Loop Mobile.

New Delhi, September 29: The Supreme Court today issued notice to the Centre on a plea seeking disclosure of certain vital documents in connection with the issue of black-money stashed in foreign banks.

The apex court sought the response from the government on allegations by eminent jurist Ram Jethmalani and others that authorities were withholding vital documents relating to the case.

New Delhi, September 29: IAEA chief Mohammad ElBaradei hailed India as a ‘leading advocate’ for nuclear disarmament and asked the world to listen to its ‘voice’ on elimination of all nuclear weapons.
