S Korea awaits word on fishermen seized by North

South Korea, August 01: North Korea accused a South Korean fishing boat of illegally entering its waters and said Saturday an investigation of four seized fishermen would continue.

South Korea has urged their quick release, saying the 29-ton vessel accidentally drifted across the sea border Thursday after its satellite navigation system apparently malfunctioned.

North Korean soldiers towed the vessel to the eastern port of Jangjon, just north of the border, South Korean officials said.

Call for probe into Nigeria killing

Nigeria, August 01: Nigerian police say Mohammed Yusuf, the leader of Boko Haram, was killed in a gun battle on Thursday

A US-based human rights group has called for an investigation into the killing of the leader of the Nigerian Islamist group blamed for a series of deadly attacks in the country’s north.

New York-based Human Rights Watch said on Friday reports that Mohammed Yusuf, the leader of Boko Haram, was shot and killed while in police custody were “extremely worrying”.

Obama, Clinton express condolences on Aquino’s demise

Washington, August 01: Condoling the demise of former Philippine’s President Corazon Aquino, US President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have hailed her as an iconic figure who fought authoritarian rule to restore democracy in her country.

Venezuela orders closure of 34 radio stations

Caracas, August 01: The Venezuelan government has ordered the closure of 34 radio stations, the head of national telecommunications regulator Conatel said Friday, in the latest bid to rein in the country’s media.

“They will have to cease transmission once they have received the order from Conatel,” said Diosdado Cabello, who is also minister of public works in President Hugo Chavez’s leftist government.

Cabello said the closures were due to the stations’ failures to meet legal operating requirements, and warned that more closures may follow.

ICC to intervene in WADA impasse

New Delhi, August 01: In an attempt to resolve the deadlock over implementation of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code, the International Cricket Council (ICC) will be sending their lawyer – Iain Higgins – to Mumbai to discuss the modalities with BCCI officials after the Indian players refused to sign it, saying that its clauses invaded on their privacy.

Unitech Q1 profits plunge 63 pc to Rs 157.77 cr

New Delhi, August 01: Real estate firm Unitech on Friday reported a 63 per cent decline in consolidated net profit at Rs 157.77 crore for the first quarter ended June 30, 2009.

In the year-ago period, the firm had a consolidated net profit of Rs 423.31 crore, Unitech said in a statement.

The country’s second-largest realty firm raked in a total income of Rs 548.22 crore in the latest quarter as compared to Rs 1,054.37 crore in the corresponding period a year ago.

Guj Governor designate D N Dwivedi passes away

New Delhi, August 01: Gujarat Governor designate D N Dwivedi, who was admitted to a hospital here due to liver problems, died early this morning. He was 74.

Dwivedi, who was suffering from liver problems, was admitted to Intensive Care Unit of Gastroenterology department in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on July 23, hospital sources said.

He was to undergo a liver transplant, but died at 4 AM today, they said.

Dwivedi was appointed as successor of Nawal Kishore Sharma, whose five-year-term got over on July 24 this month.

WADA row: BCCI to meet on Sunday

Mumbai, August 01: The Cricket Board’s all-powerful Working Committee will meet here tomorrow to sort out urgently the vexed issue of top Indian cricketers’ refusal to sign the WADA Anti-Doping Code to which the International Cricket Council (ICC) is a signatory.

India’s leading cricketers, including master batsman Sachin Tendulkar and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, are reluctant to sign the much-debated ‘Whereabouts Requirements’ clause of the Code which, they claim, infringes on their privacy.

New front in Maharashtra ahead of Assembly polls: Ambedkar

Solapur, August 01: Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh President Prakash Ambedkar has indicated at the possibility of formation of a new political front in Maharashtra ahead of the Assembly election likely in October.

Talking to media persons here last evening, Ambedkar said the new formation, which is likely to take shape by August 10, will be based on development theme and even saffron allies Shiv Sena and BJP are free to join it.

Chennai, August 01: The Madras High Court has held that the city police had no legal right to prevent a health Spa from being run by any citizen of the country even if the services were offered by members of opposite sex.

Granting an interim injunction on a application by M/s Influence Lifestyle Stores Private Ltd seeking to restraining police from interfering with the ‘peaceful conduct’ of the business offering various Spa therapies for both sexes by members belonging to both sexes, Justice K Chandru said ‘there is no law regulating the field’.

Ingredients:

• 31/2 Cups Rava
• 11/2 Cups Sugar
• 2 Cups grated coconut
• 2 tbsp Cardamom powder
• 4 tbsp Ghee

Procedure:
• Heat ghee and fry rava till it turns brown.
• Mix coconut and elaichi powder and fry it for few more minutes.
• Prepare sugar syrup.
• Add rava mixture in sugar syrup.
• Keep it for cooling.
• Stir till the mixture turns thick.
• Shape into round balls when the mixture is still hot.

Centre to launch new fertiliser subsidy scheme: Azhagiri

Madurai, August 01: The Union Government will launch a scheme that will enable farmers get fertiliser subsidy directly, said Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers M K Azhagiri.

Distributing welfare assistance to agricultural workers under the Tamil Nadu Agricultural Labourers Social Safety and Welfare Scheme here last night, he said, “the direct fertiliser subsidy scheme” would be introduced initially in two districts, including Madurai, in Tamil Nadu.

‘Panda pleaded not guilty before a union minister’

Bhubaneswar, August 01: Days before allegedly committing suicide and eliminating four of his family members, senior IAS officer Jagadananda Panda had pleaded innocence in a CBI case before a senior union minister, sources close to him claimed.

Panda, who was protector general of emigrants, had told the minister he was innocent and one could check his asset list given to the ministry, an IAS officer who attended a condolence meeting today said without naming the minister.

• 1 cup All Purpose Flour
• 2 tsp Soda Powder
• 100 gms Ghee
• 3/4 Liter Milk
• 6 Cardamoms (crushed)
• 1 tbsp Sugar
• 1 tsp Rose Essence
• 2 Pinch Saffron
For Syrup:

• 3 cups Sugar
• 3 cups Water

Procedure:

• Boil the milk till it reduces to half a cup.
• Cool and add soda powder and 1tbsp sugar.
• Mix properly and make it smooth.

The Labour party lost the Norwich North by-election to the Conservatives, sparking off another round of criticism against Brown’s leadership.

Brown is likely to face another bid to unseat him as the party leader during Labour’s annual conference in September, while the party is expected to lose another by-election in Scotland later this year.

26/11 blasts: Fahim nailed for making maps

Mumbai, August 01: A hand writing expert opined in a special court that markings shown on a map of 26/11 terror target spots recovered from slain terrorist Abu Ismail matched with specimen writings of accused Fahim Ansari, who is being tried along with Pakistani gunman Ajmal Kasab.

According to special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, Fahim had allegedly drawn a map of target spots in Mumbai and handed them over to banned terror organisation Laskhar-e-Taiba (LeT) which executed the terror attacks.
