Mumbai, August 01: Shweta Gulati, the spirited doctor of television serial Sanjeevini is now hosting a reality show ‘Dekh India Dekh’. She will be the face of Sony channel with this new comedy show.

It appears that the sweet actress is putting in a lot of hard work to fit into the shoes of playing host. Shweta has never hosted a reality show before. “A host needs to have a very different body language and I’m just trying to get in that skin” says Shweta.

Hamas, Fatah prisoner row may stall talks

Gaza, August 01: Hamas has threatened to boycott reconciliation talks with Fatah unless hundreds of its jailed supporters are released from prisons in the West Bank.

Hamas Premier Ismail Haniya said that the unity talks between the two Palestinian rival factions, Hamas and Fatah, are unlikely to succeed without the release of detained Hamas supporters.

NATO secretary general in favour of negotiations with Taliban

Copenhagen, August 01: The new head of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) spoke out in favour of negotiations with the radical Islamist Taliban in Afghanistan, Danish media reported Saturday.

In an interview published in the Danish newspaper Politiken, Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that there were groups within the Taliban with whom it was possible to speak and create reconciliation in Afghanistan.

He added however that it was also clear that there was a hard core within Taliban that only respected military force and with whom there was no possibility of agreement.

Bomb targets Sunni mosque in central Iraq

Baghdad, August 01: A roadside bomb wounded at least two people near a Sunni mosque as worshippers gathered for dawn prayers on Saturday, police in the central Iraqi town of Hilla said.

The blast targeted the al-Sahaba Mosque in the neighbourhood of Jarf al-Sakhr, police there told the German Press Agency dpa. One of those wounded included a member of a Sunni, government-allied Sahwa, or “Awakening” militia.

US conducts successful missile test in Hawaii

Washington, July 01: The US military says it has carried out a missile defense test successfully off the coast of Hawaii, amid continued tensions with North Korea.

The test was carried out late Thursday, in which an interceptor missile from a naval destroyer, the USS Hopper, shot down a short-range ballistic missile on the island of Kauai, a statement from the Missile Defense Agency said.

The destroyer’s Aegis weapon system “successfully guided the SM-3 (interceptor) to a direct body-to-body hit, approximately two minutes after leaving the ship,” the agency said.

‘Hamas accepts Palestine with 1967 borders’

Gaza, August 01: Hamas says it is ready to cooperate with any US or international effort to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and to accept a Palestinian state based on 1967 borders.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal published on Friday, Hamas political leader Khalid Meshaal said: “We along with other Palestinian factions in consensus agreed upon accepting a Palestinian state on the 1967 lines,” adding “this is the national program. This is our program. This is a position we stand by and respect.”

Clinton contradicts US envoy over Sudan

Washington, August 01: The US Secretary of State says her country will not ease some of the incumbent sanctions against Sudan a day after a top US official said easing the sanctions might help the peace process.

On July 30, the US special envoy for Sudan, General Scott Gration, had told US lawmakers that he did not know of any intelligence to justify Sudan remaining on a list of “state sponsors of terrorism,” a designation accompanied by sanctions and restrictions on aid.

Obama: More job losses on the way

Washington, August 01: US President Barack Obama predicts more job losses, as unemployment rates in some parts of the United States reached record levels.

In June, the jobless rate hit a 26-year high of 9.5 percent amid more cutbacks by employers.

Now, in some parts of the United States, double-digit unemployment is a reality, as reports showed that 41 markets across the country have job-less rates higher than 10 percent, Press TV correspondent in Washington said.

The rates are in sharp contrast from last year, when all 100 markets showed figures in the single digits.

US military supplies MKO with medical assistance

Diyala, August 01: The US military provides medical help to Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) members in Camp Ashraf in Diyala, after the enclave was attacked by Iraqi forces.

Earlier on Tuesday, Iraqi security forces attacked Camp Ashraf, the training base of the MKO terrorist group, about 60 km (37 miles) north of Baghdad.

According to senior Iraqi security officials, the death toll of MKO members killed in the incident stood at eleven, while around 300 others were wounded.

School timings revised for Ramzan

Hyderabad, August 01 (Siasat News): According to a GO released by director of education, during the holy month of Ramzan, the timings of all the upper primary, primary and high schools are revised with effect from August 21 to September 21, 2009.

The schools will now run between 8.00 am to 1.30 pm inclusive of English, Urdu and Telugu medium schools.

In the meantime, A Laxman, president state teachers union, Mr. Narsimha Reddy, general secretary, Mr. Syed Wahidullah Husseini, Mr. B Bhujang Rao and Mr. Mohd. Abdul Samad have welcomed the decision of the government.

Bond to play in Indian domestic league

Wellington, August 01: Fast bowler Shane Bond will play for the New Zealand ‘A’ team in the Buchi Babu All India Invitation Tournament next month to warm up for the one-day series against Sri Lanka and India.

Bond, alongwith Neil Broom, Nathan McCullum and Kyle Mills will play a series of two-day games from August 16 to 29 in the tournament to be hosted by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, according to a media report here.

Johnson looking better: Ponting

Melbourne, August 01: Though Mitchell Johnson did not bowl with the new ball at Edgbaston, his performance was encouraging for skipper Ricky Ponting, since he bowled with much greater control than at Cardiff or at Lord’s.

Johnson has 0-23 from 6 overs, though he had a close shout for lbw against Ian Bell turned down.

“I think he looked a lot better today than he has in the last couple of games,” Ponting said.

US, Saudi working together against terrorism: Clinton

Washington, August 01: The US and Saudi Arabia are working together to deny terrorists “safe haven and access to funding,” particularly in Pakistan and Afghanistan, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said.

Clinton, who met Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal here yesterday, said the two countries, which are close allies, were cooperating in dealing with the menace.

“We are working together to deny terrorists safe haven and access to funding, particularly in Afghanistan and Pakistan,” she said at a joint press conference with Prince Saud.

Bangladesh complete Windies series whitewash

Dhaka, August 01: Half-centuries from Junaid Siddique and Mahmudullah led Bangladesh to a three-wicket victory, and a 3-0 cleansweep of the one-day international series over West Indies on Friday.

Siddique struck six fours in 55 from 73 balls, and Mahmudullah, who was named man-of-the-match, hit two fours and one six in an unbeaten 51 from 70 balls to help Bangladesh overhaul a victory target of 249 in the third and final ODI at Warner Park.

Mahmudullah made sure of victory when he flicked a delivery from Kemar Roach through square leg.

Ganguly mulls legal action

New Delhi, August 01: Sourav Ganguly today said that he is not embarrassed by the sting operation, which claimed that a sleaze racket was being run in the bar and restaurant he owns, and was seeking legal opinion to deal with the issue.

The sting operation by ‘Channel 10’ last night showed dancers performing at the restaurant– The Food Pavilion on Park Street– on July 5, allegedly in violation of rules.

Iran puts anti-Ahmadinejad ‘rioters’ on trial

Tehran, August 01: The trial of a group of people accused of rioting after the controversial re-election in June of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as Iran’s president began on Saturday at a revolutionary court in Tehran.

Their prosecution in a revolutionary court comes as Ahmadinejad, who is due to be sworn in on August 5, sought to ease political tensions by denying any rift with the country’s all-powerful supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The official IRNA news agency said the trial of a group of “rioters” had begun, but it did not specify the exact number of those in the dock.

Eye on India: Pak builds structures along LoC

Srinagar, August 01: Pakistan is increasing its presence along the international border with India at a frenetic pace.

Few weeks after the BSF Special DG expressed concern over Pakistani constructions along the Line of Control (LoC), CNN-IBN has managed to get exclusive footage of six Pakistani structures near R S Pura sector on the Indo-Pak border.

According to BSF officials, Pakistan increased its construction activity along the border with India since the Mumbai terrorist strikes attacks last year.

PM holds security meet; reviews threat from Pakistan, China

New Delhi, August 01: With security situation continuing to be volatile and several intelligence alerts coming in of possible terror strikes, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday chaired a meeting of the National Security Council to review the country’s preparedness.

At the meeting held at PM’s residence 7, Race Course Road here, talks mainly focussed on the terror threat emanating from Pakistan-based militant groups and security concerns regarding China.

The government has of late shown concerns over reported Chinese incursions along the border in Arunachal Pradesh.

Australia votes to recognise same-sex unions

Sydney, August 01: Australia’s centre-left ruling party on Saturday voted for national recognition of same-sex unions but stopped short of lifting a ban on gay marriage.

The national Labor conference voted to develop a system for the registration and recognition of same-sex relationships, after gay rights advocates failed to gather enough numbers for a resolution to legalise gay marriage.

But frontbencher Anthony Albanese told delegates while it was not his “ideal position”, the watered-down resolution was an important reflection of shifting public attitudes.
