New HIV strain discovered in woman from Cameroon

Washington, August 03: A new strain of the virus that causes AIDS has been discovered in a woman from the African nation of Cameroon. It differs from the three known strains of human immunodeficiency virus and appears to be closely related to a form of simian virus recently discovered in wild gorillas, researchers report in Monday’s edition of the journal Nature Medicine.

48-hour Manipur bandh begins, normal life affected

Imphal, August 03: A 48-hours bandh called by Apunba Lup against the fake encounter on July 23 paralysed the normal life.

The Apunba Lup also demanded resignation of the Chief Minister O Ibobi on moral ground with to the July 23 firing incident in crowded market area.

The strike will be applicable on all the schools and education institutions even though essential services like the hospital, fire, water services and religious matter are kept outside the purview of the strike.

Three Cambodian soldiers die after eating poisonous mushrooms

Phnom Penh, August 03: Three Cambodian soldiers died and one was left seriously ill after the group ate poisonous mushrooms picked near an 11th-century temple at the centre of an ongoing border dispute with neighboring Thailand, national media reported Monday.
Military officials said the men were hospitalised July 24, hours after eating the unknown type of mushrooms in a soup while stationed several kilometres from the Preah Vihear temple, The Cambodia Daily newspaper reported.

China detains 319 more in Urumqi riot probe

China, August 03: Police in China’s northwestern Xinjiang province have detained 319 more people in connection with the July 5 riots in this provincial capital.

The arrests were made after the police said to have detained 1,572 people in connection with the clashes in which 197 people were killed and hundreds were injured.

The statement from the Urumqi Public Security Bureau said late Sunday the 319 people had been detained after information was received from the public or obtained through the police investigation.

Govt warning works, India’s private airlines call off proposed strike

New Delhi, August 03: Private airlines in India late Sunday called off their proposal to suspend domestic operations from Aug 18. The decision came after the government waned strict action against the private carriers and air travellers expressed anguish and resentment.

In a communique issued in Mumbai, the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA), a representative body of private carriers, said its secretary general Anil Baijal was able to “impress upon” the members to hold back their decision.

Political mercury shoots up in MP over Bundelkhand

Bhopal, August 03: With ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition Congress accusing each other of drawing political mileage from the Bundelkhand issue, political mercury has suddenly shot up in Madhaya Pradesh as the union government has decided to set up a central development authority for the Bundelkhand region.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has taken strong exception to the move and shot off a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh alleging that it was an attempt to infringe upon the rights of the state.

Zardari sacks 76 judges appointed during emergency

Islamabad, August 03: Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari today issued notification to terminate 76 judges appointed by the then President General Pervez Musharraf.

All the sacked judges had appointed during the emergency. The notification was issued after the Pakistan Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered invalidating the appointment judges and closure of Islamabad High Court.

The Supreme Court declared the former President Pervez Musharraf’s imposition of emergency in November 2007 as unconstitutional.

Fresher ragged at Kirori Mal College

A first year student was allegedly ragged by two seniors at Kirori Mal College (KMC).

Taking prompt action into the allegations, the KMC administration has asked the both seniors to vacate the college hostel immediately.

Angry over long power cuts, mob ransacks PSEB office

Ludhiana, August 03: Seven persons, including area councillor Rakesh Sharma, were arrested for allegedly ransacking the office of the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) on the Kara Bara Road today.

The residents are reportedly upset over incessant power cuts in the area. Later, the protesters staged a dharna on the Kakowal Road and blocked traffic for over an hour.

According to information, the infuriated mob went to the divisional office of the PSEB on the Kara Bara road around 10.30 am and vented out their anger.

Saudi Arabia executes Nigerian murderer

Riyadh, August 03: A Nigerian man convicted of murdering a Saudi national after robbing him, tying him up and leaving him to die, was beheaded by the sword on Sunday, the interior ministry said.

Qorbi bin Musa Adam was executed the Red Sea port city of Jeddah for killing Ibrahim Al Assiri, who apparently suffocated to death, the ministry said in a statement carried by the official SPA news agency.

Adam stole money from Assiri, then beat him, bound his hands and feet and stuck a tape over his mouth, it said.

Remains of pilot missing 18 years in Iraq found

Baghdad, August 03: The remains of the first American lost in the Gulf War have been found in Iraq, the military said on Sunday, after struggling for nearly two decades with the question of whether he was dead or alive.

The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology has positively identified the remains of Captain Michael “Scott” Speicher, whose disappearance has bedeviled investigators since his jet was shot down over the Iraq desert on the first night of the 1991 war.

The top Navy officer said the discovery illustrates the military’s commitment to bring its troops home.

2 die in Katwa clashes, CPM team faces public ire in Natungram

Kolkata, August 03: Two persons were killed as fresh clashes broke out in Katwa of Burdwan district on Sunday. The police, however, said both the deceased had a crime record.

Burdwan has been reeling under political violence for over a month with clashes recurring in Mangalkot, Natungram and other areas. Clashes erupted in Khalilpur village in early morning after two groups of miscreants, allegedly backed by rival political parties, clashed with each other at Kumargram ghat. They exchanged fire and hurled bombs at each other.

Qaeda group claims deadly attack on Algerian soldiers

Dubai, August 03: Al Qaeda’s North African wing has claimed it was behind an ambush of an Algerian military convoy in which at least 11 soldiers were killed, US-based monitoring group SITE Intelligence said on Sunday.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) said in an Internet statement it had launched the July 29 attack near the town of Tipaza in Algeria and had killed at least 15 soldiers, said SITE, which monitors Islamist websites.

Aziz and Majid were among eight people on trial in Iraq’s High Tribunal for chasing the Fayli — Shia Kurds — out of the northern provinces of Kirkuk and Diyala in 1980.

Maoists shoot 2 CPM men, declare death sentence for six more

Mumbai, August 03: The spate of murders in Lalgarh and adjoining areas continues, as two CPM leaders were shot dead by Maoists even though security forces have been conducting operations in the area for a month.

The CPM branch committee secretary of Amdanga, Nirmal Mahato, was shot dead near his home early Sunday morning. The attack came barely 10 hours after CPM leader Kalipada Singh was shot dead by Maoists in Chirugora village.

AIIMS to start specialised course in emergency medicine

New Delhi, August 03: In a move that might streamline the patient load in the Emergency Department, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) will soon be starting a new department for emergency medicine.

According to rough estimates, the Emergency Department at the AIIMS gets around 500 cases a day. The authorities at the institute are hopeful of welcoming the first batch of students in January 2010.

The proposal for the new department has already been approved by the academic committee and courses for the post-graduate students of MD-EM are now being designed.

Bahrain Expats Welcome Labour Reforms Businesses Wary

Manama, August 03: Bahrain’s launch of labour friendly initiatives allowing expatriates to change jobs without no-objection certificates from sponsors has received a thumping welcome from workers, while businessmen pressed on with their reservations about the reform.

The new rules became effective from August 1 under the Labour Market Reform Law implemented last year.

A Bangladeshi national, Abdulkhaliq Mohammed, said sponsorship reforms would end exploitation of workers.
