Two Nepalese arrested with fake currency in MP

Bhopal, August 30: Two Nepalese of Indian origin have been arrested here for allegedly smuggling fake currency into the country, police said today. Atiq Ahmed alias A K Shrivastava (42), a resident of Birganj in Nepal and Rajesh Gupta (42) of Khatmandu were arrested yesterday with counterfeit currency of face value Rs 11,000, following a tip-off, Madhya Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) chief Pawan Shrivastava said.

Himachal Pradesh High Court judges to declare assets

Shimla, August 30: After judges in Delhi and Kerala, judges of the Himachal Pradesh High Court have also decided to follow the footsteps of Supreme Court justices and make their assets public, a court official said Sunday.

“A decision to declare assets has been taken unanimously by all the nine judges, including acting Chief Justice RB Mishra, after the apex court judges’ resolve to make public their assets,” VK Sharma, Registrar General of the High Court, said.

Dalit woman raped on gun-point

Muzaffarnagar, August 30: A Dalit woman has been allegedly raped on gun-point by two youths in Firozabad village of the district, police said toady. The incident took place yesterday morning when the victim was going to answer nature”s call, they said.

In her complaint, the victim alleged that the youths threatened her to kill if she disclosed the incident to anyone. The woman has been sent for medical examination and search on to nab the culprits, they added.

Three test positive for swine flu in Chandigarh

Chandigarh, August 30: A UK national and two teenaged boys have tested positive for swine flu here, taking the total number of such cases in the city to 15.

A 14-year-old boy from Panchkula, who had recently returned from Hong Kong with his parents, was taken to Government Medical College and Hospital on Thursday with swine-flu like symptoms.

Another 14-year-old boy, who did not have any recent travel history, also tested positive for H1N1 virus. Four members of his family have also been quarantined, nodal officer for swine flu cases H C Gera said.

Australia to apologise to British child migrants

Sydney, August 30: Australia plans to apologise to thousands of British children admitted to orphanages where brutality and sexual abuse were everyday occurrences, a cabinet minister said Sunday.

‘This is a significant national step in the healing process for forgotten Australians and former child migrants,’ Families Minister Jenny Macklin said.

As many as 10,000 poor children that Britain didn’t want were sent out to Australia between 1947-67. Often falsely labelled orphans and treated abominably when they arrived on ships, they became known collectively as the Orphans of the Empire.

Reports of leadership change baseless: Naidu

New Delhi, August 30: Senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday termed as baseless the reports of a planned change in top leadership of the party, saying LK Advani will continue to remain the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha.

Naidu further said the party will take its own decisions regarding its future.

Naidu’s remarks came after senior RSS leader Madandas Devi expressed hope that the BJP will come out stronger from the current crisis. He also made it clear that at the RSS would not interfere in the BJP’s decision-making.

Pakistan altered missiles given by US to target India: Report

Washington, August 30: Pakistan illegally modified missiles given by the US for its defence to expand capability to strike land targets, a potential threat to India, a media report said on Sunday.

The charge, which set off new tensions between the US and Pakistan, was made in an unpublicized diplomatic protest in late June to Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani and other top Pakistani officials, The New York Times reported.

Police Havaldar commits suicide

Jagdalpur, August 30: A police havaldar, who was posted as mess In-charge at the Jungle Warfare College here, has died of self-inflicted gunshot wound in Kanker district of Chhattigarh, police said today.

Jashpur-resident Manoj Kumar Tigga, who had been recently promoted as Havaldar from Constable, returned home from duty yesterday and committed suicide using his rifle at his quarters.

Brigadier B K Ponwar and Additional Superintendent of Police Balaji Rao rushed to the spot. The reason behind the suicide was not known yet.

Dehradun, August 30: Around 100 Congress workers of Vikasnagar joined Bharatiya Janta Party here yesterday in presence of Chief Minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’.

Speaking at a function to welcome the new entrants, Dr Nishank said that now Muslims were joining BJP in large numbers. He alleged that Congress has been using Muslim community as a vote bank. Congress has never made any efforts for the welfare of the community.

Philippine president to visit Libya

Manila, August 30: Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was to leave for Libya on Sunday to attend the African Union Summit meeting in Tripoli and the 40th anniversary of the Libyan revolution.

The Department of Foreign Affairs called the trip a “rare opportunity” for Arroyo to meet with leaders of African states to “push for stronger relations.”

It said Arroyo will attend the African Union Summit meeting on August 31. The gathering would discuss peace and security issues, including international anti-piracy efforts in the Somali coasts.

NATO supplies for troops in Afghanistan suspended

Islamabad, August 30: Fuel and other supplies to NATO forces in Afghanistan were stopped as traffic on both sides of the Pakistan-Afghan border remained suspended yesterday because of a row over search of goods trucks coming from Afghanistan. Hundreds of trailers carrying fuel and other supplies, including food, military equipment and vehicles, were stuck up in Pakistan’s southwestern border town of Chaman, the second major supply route for NATO after the northwestern Khyber tribal region.

Major fraud allegations in Afghan vote top 550

Kabul, August 30: Major allegations of fraud in Afghanistan’s presidential election have topped 550, more than doubling the figure investigators reported just two days earlier, officials said Sunday.

The spike indicates just how pervasive ballot box stuffing and voter intimidation may have been during the country’s Aug. 20 vote, threatening the legitimacy of the election.

The hundreds of complaints could also greatly delay final results, which cannot be announced until major fraud allegations are investigated and are already not expected until mid-September at the earliest.

Prisoners protest in Bettiah divisional jail

Bettiah, August 30: Protesting the manhandling of an inmate by police, prisoners of Bettiah divisional jail went on strike inside the jail.

According to police, protesting against the manhandling of an inmate, Harihar Yadav, prisoners went on a strike demanding action against the guilty policemen since last evening.

The incident took place after visitors of Harihar Yadav were not allowed by the jail authorities to meet him, police said, adding this led to scuffle between police and prisoners.

Three killed in car accident

Alappuzha, August 30: Three people were killed and one person was injured when the car in which they were travelling collided with a van at Mathilakam near Cherthala early today. Police said the deceased were identfied as Rafiq (37), his brother Sajeer (29) and Nawaz (38), all hailing from Kollam.

The ill-fated car was proceeding to Ernakulam from Kollam when the mishap occured on the national highway.

The injured was admiited to a hospital in Ernakulam, police added.

BJP to emerge stronger from crisis: RSS

New Delhi, August 30: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Sunday expressed hope that the BJP will come out stronger from the current crisis, while making it clear that it would not interfere in the party’s decision-making.

Senior RSS leader Madandas Devi made the remarks at a short press conference following a breakfast meeting with senior BJP leader LK Advani at the latter’s residence. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat was also present at the meeting.

“BJP has assured the Sangh that they will stand united and solve all problems,” Devi told reporters.

Rebel clashes along China-Myanmar border subside

Meng Peng, August 30: Fighting subsided Sunday along China’s southern border after days of clashes between Myanmar government troops and ethnic rebels sent up to 30,000 refugees streaming into China.

Some rebels turned their guns over to Chinese authorities and swapped their uniforms for civilian clothes, tired of being out-manned by thousands of Myanmar troops.

“There was no way we would win,” former rebel Ri Chenchuan said as he shopped for new clothes.

Blast kills 12 police recruits in Pakistan’s Swat

Islamabad, August 30: An official says a suicide bomber has killed at least 12 police recruits near the main police station in Pakistan’s Swat Valley. It is one of the largest attacks in the northwestern valley since the army said it regained control of it from Taliban militants.

Television footage from the scene Sunday showed officers gathering up mutilated bodies outside the station in the valley’s main town of Mingora.

Police dispatcher Mohammad Akhtar says the blast came as new recruits were being trained.
