Mumbai, July 30: There is a strong buzz in the industry circles that Vidya Balan has been signed by Yash Chopra for his directorial next.

It is the same project which was supposed to star Aamir Khan along with Preity Zinta. But while, Aamir is still being non-committal about being approached for the project, other news making the rounds is that Preity has been replaced by Vidya Balan.

Sources are claiming that it is a love story spanning ages, but is completely different to what Chopra’s last directorial effort Veer Zara was.

US urges release of Iran political detainees

Washington, July 30: The US Secretary of State moves away from the stated position of non-interference in Iran’s internal affairs, with a call for the release of political prisoners.

“We believe that it is imperative for the (Iranian) authorities to release political prisoners,” Hillary Clinton said on Wednesday during a joint press conference with British Foreign Secretary David Miliband.

Clinton added the United States deplores reports from Iran that political prisoners were allegedly being abused.

Ahmadinejad to be approved as president August 3‎

Tehran, July 30: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will be officially approved as the next Iranian president by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution on August 3.

Under the Iranian Constitution, the president-elect must be officially approved by the Leader.

In a ceremony to be attended by high-ranking officials on Monday, Ahmadinejad will be officially endorsed by Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei as the next Iranian president.

The ceremony will be held two days prior to Ahmadinejad’s inauguration before the Parliament (Majlis).

Spain blames ETA for police station bombing

Madrid, July 30: The Spanish government has blamed the Basque separatist group ETA for a powerful car-bomb explosion outside a police barracks in northern Spain.

About 120 people, one-third of them children, were sleeping inside the building in Burgos when the bomb went off at around 4:00 am (0200 GMT), blowing off most of its facade, Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said.

Israel lets meager cement into ruined Gaza

Jerusalem, July 30: Israel says it will allow a one-time transfer of cement into the Gaza Strip for the first time since it left many homes in ruins during the 22-day onslaught against the territory.

Israeli officials said on Wednesday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak had allowed the transfer of more than 310 metric tons of cement for rebuilding a flour mill, a sewage treatment facility and the British cemetery, AFP reported.

4,000 people displaced in Nigeria violence

Maiduguri, July 30: Nearly 4,000 people abandon their homes as soldiers in tanks besiege the shelter compound of an “extremist” sect in the northern town of Maiduguri for the third day.

Apollus Jediel, a relief official, said about 1,000 people had abandoned their homes Wednesday, joining 3,000 displaced this week in four states who were caught up in continued fighting between government forces and Boko Haram fighters, said to be seeking to impose “Islamic law” across the country.

Mortaza happy to step aside for Shakib

Dhaka, July 30: Mashrafe Mortaza, the Bangladesh captain, has said he would happily step down and let Shakib Al Hasan continue leading the side if the board so wanted.

Bangladesh board director Jala Yunus said Shakib, who led Bangladesh to their first Test series win over West Indies and a 2-0 lead in the one-dayers in the absence of the injured Mortaza, was a “serious contender” for the captain’s post.

Islamabad, July 30: Reciprocating the “sentiments for peace” expressed by his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh, Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday said dialogue is the only way forward for the two countries.

Gilani’s remark came just after Singh’s address to the Lok Sabha on India-Pakistan relations on Wednesday.

Gilani said the two leaders “had useful talks and a good meeting of minds” during their talks on the sidelines of the Non-Aligned Movement summit at Sharm el-Sheikh on July 16.

Barzani re-elected as Iraqi Kurd president

Arbil: Massud Barzani was re-elected president of Iraq’s autonomous region of Kurdistan and the two main Kurdish parties, which ran on a joint parliamentary list, won 57 percent of the vote in weekend elections, official results showed.

Barzani, who had been widely expected to win, secured 69.57 percent of the popular vote in Saturday’s poll.

The joint Kurdistania list, comprising Barzani’s Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union Kurdistan (PUK) of Jalal Talabani, meanwhile, won 57 percent of the legislative vote.

Russia tells 2 Ukrainian diplomats to go home

Moscow, July 30: Russia has told two Ukrainian diplomats to leave the country in retaliation for moves by Kiev against two Russians.

The dispute underlines the tensions between Russia and neighbouring Ukraine, whose leaders seek closer integration with the West.

Ukraine told the two diplomats to leave this week, after weapons movements by the Russian Black Sea Fleet that Ukraine said were not permitted. The fleet is based in Ukraine’s port of Odessa.

Shrimp catalyst may churn out cheaper, greener biofuel

Washington, July 30: A catalyst made out of shrimp shells may churn out faster, cheaper and greener biodiesel, according to a new study.
Xinsheng Zheng and colleagues, who led the study in China, described the development of a new catalyst produced from shrimp shells. In lab tests, the shrimp shell catalysts converted canola oil to biodiesel (89 percent conversion in three hours) faster and more efficiently than some conventional catalysts.

An energy-hungry world, concerned about global warming, increasingly puts its future fuel hopes on renewable fuels like biodiesel.

50 years of bad planning led to Delhi deluge, says NDMA

New Delhi, July 30: As the national capital continues to cope with the after-effects of heavy showers with some places still waterlogged, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) says five decades of bad planning were responsible for Delhi coming to a virtual standstill on that rained out Monday three days ago.

Advocating that responsibility be fixed on authorities, the nodal agency for managing disasters in the country feels that the situation worsens every year.

Drug violence in Mexico leaves 17 dead

Ciudad Juarez, July 30: Suspected drug violence has left 17 people dead in north Mexico, including a federal prosecutor and one decapitated victim, officials said.

The deaths, which came amid a military crackdown on the nation’s powerful drug traffickers, all occurred in Chihuahua state yesterday and a day before, including 11 in the country’s most violent city of Ciudad Juarez.

Russia to explore Cuban oil, lends $150 million

Havana, July 30: Russia has provided a $150-million loan to Cuba and signed pacts with the Caribbean nation for oil exploration in the Gulf of Mexico, a media report said.
The money will be provided in instalments over two years, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.

The agreements signed between Cuba’s state-owned firm Cubapetroleo and Russia’s Zarubezhneft company will allow the firms to jointly explore crude oil off the coast of Cuba.

Russian Vice President Igor Sechin and Cuban Vice President Ricardo Cabrisas participated in the signing ceremony.

Ribhu Chawla murder case: Four arrested

New Delhi, July 30: At least four persons were arrested by the Delhi Police in the kidnapping and murder of a student.

The police has also recovered the car which was allegedly used for abduction.

The arrested youths were identified as Rishi, Manish, Gaurav and Rocky. They were friends of Ribhu. They were friends of Ribhu, police said.

Ribhu Chawla, a class XIth student of KR Mangalam World School in Vikaspuri, was abducted on July 28.

The body of 16-year-old boy was found on a plot in South Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area on Wednesday.

Ambani gas dispute: SC rejects RNRL plea

New Delhi, July 30: In a major jolt to Anil Ambani group, the Supreme Court today refused to take up a gas dispute between Reliance Industries and RNRL for final hearing on September 1.

The apex court rejected the request of Anil Ambani Group company for expeditious proceedings, saying that it will decide the final date on September 1.
