“Shooting an action film can lead to plenty of injuries. A muscle pull, certain bruises are quite usual. In ‘Luck’, I sustained an injury while shooting the train scene. When the train was on fire, the flames went up a little too high and my eyelashes and the skin under my eyes got burnt,” Imran told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

Husband and wife share exact name, date of birth

Beijing, July 02: A husband and wife are getting some attention in Danjiangkou, Hubei Province, due to their names.

Both are named Wang Yang, the same two Chinese characters, and both were born on April 29, 1982.

The couple began to date in 2007 when they worked together at the same company.

The affectionate pair said they never quarrel because both feel they would curse themselves if they fought and called out each other’s name.

Britney Spears dead in Twitter page

Beijing, July 02: Britney Spears has been claimed dead in her own Twitter page, after hackers got into her account and posted a fake message.

The pop singer’s Twitter page was targeted by hackers on Saturday. One announced her death to her two million followers, saying: “Britney has passed today. It is a sad day for everyone. More news to come.”

After the fake tweet, the rumor quickly spread across the Internet.

Over 80% of Pakistanis view Taliban as threat to country: Poll

Islamabad, July 02: More than 80 percent of Pakistanis view the Taliban as a critical threat to the country, according to an opinion poll released Wednesday, marking a major rise in public support behind the government’s campaign against the militants.

The turn in public mood is a boost to the military in its offensive against the insurgency. Pakistan’s army has been battling militants in the Swat Valley in the country’s northwest, a campaign that has driven some two million civilians from their homes since April, news reports said.

No question of military involvement in Afghanistan: India

New Delhi: India ruled out any military involvement in Afghanistan and underlined the need for greater international cooperation in restoring stability to the violence-torn country.

“Nobody has suggested that India should get militarily involved. India does not get militarily involved unless it is attacked,” External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna told reporters when asked if India was planning to involve itself militarily in restoring stability in Afghanistan.

Pilot of Yemenia plane did not send distress signal

Sana’a, July 02: The Yemen Airways plane that crashed off the Comoros islands with 153 people on board did not issue a distress signal or report any mechanical problems, a company official said Wednesday.

‘Aviation authorities in the Comoros informed us that the Moroni Airport control did not receive a distress signal from the pilot,’ Hassan al-Houthi, head of the technical department of the Yemenia told reporters in Sana’a.

New Delhi, July 02: With the number of students across the IITs growing at a much faster rate than faculty, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal on Wednesday had a stopgap solution to the problem — connectivity among the IITs to enable sharing of faculty resources.

Talking to IIT directors at a workshop at IIT-Delhi on Wednesday, Sibal said: “While I am happy that each of the institutes is taking a different path towards the future, I suggest that there should also be commonality and interconnectivity among the institutes. This could solve the problem of faculty crunch, at least for now.”

New Aids vaccine ready for human trials

Toronto, July 02: The Canadian University of Western Ontario has developed a new HIV/Aids vaccine that is ready for human trials.

The vaccine called SAV001H has been developed by the university at London, about 160 km from Toronto, in collaboration with Sumagen Canada, a subsidiary of the Korean pharmaceutical company.

In a statement Tuesday, Sumagen Canada said it has submitted an application to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to begin the first phase of trials of the vaccine on human beings.

IMF to issue first-ever bonds

Washington, July 02: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said Wednesday it will issue bonds for the first time in its 60-year history in an effort to win contributions from emerging economies like China, Brazil and Russia.

World Bank spending at record levels during global crisis

Washington, July 02: The World Bank Wednesday said it spent a record $58.8 billion on loans, grants, guarantees and social projects over the last year to help poor countries steer through a dramatic global recession.

The development bank said its budget jumped 54 percent between July 2008 and June 30 from a year earlier and is now at the highest level in its 60-year history.

The money keeps developing countries from cutting back on social programmes, and World Bank President Robert Zoellick said he expected the demand to remain high as the economic crisis continues through 2010.

Arnold declares fiscal emergency in California

Sacramento, July 02: California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger Wednesday declared a fiscal emergency as lawmakers failed to pass a budget to close the state’s $24.3 billion budget gap.

The emergency means that the state may start issuing IOU’s instead of checks as soon as Wednesday. Schwarzenegger also ordered state workers to take a third unpaid day of leave every month, to help save the largest state in the US some $1 billion annually.

US stocks rise after completing best quarter since 2003

New York, July 02: US stocks climbed higher Wednesday on slightly rosier prospects for manufacturing and housing, a day after investors celebrated the best quarter on Wall Street since 2003.

The stock market was buoyed by figures showing the manufacturing sector shrank at its slowest pace in 10 months, the latest sign that the US economy is stabilizing.

The Institute for Supply Management’s index climbed in June to 44.8. Any figure below 50 indicates a contraction.

Los Angeles, July 02: Late singer Michael Jackson named fellow music great Diana Ross as the backup guardian of his three children in the event that his mother Katherine, 79, was unable to fulfil that role, according to his 2002 will, which was revealed Wednesday.

According to the will, dated July 7, 2002, all of Jackson’s assets have been left to the Michael Jackson Family Trust.

US again delays releasing CIA interrogation report

Washington, July 02: The US government has again delayed the release of a full report on the CIA’s controversial interrogation programme. The government had earlier intended to complete its review of the 2004 report and release it two weeks ago.

But continued inter-agency debate about how much of the secret report could be made public pushed back the deadline.

Last week, the Justice Department sent a letter to the Judge overseeing the Freedom of Information Act lawsuit saying it needed until July 1 to complete the process.

Zardari vows to fight terror till elimination of militants

Islamabad, July 02: Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari today pledged to carry on the campaign against terrorism till the “complete elimination” of militants as he reviewed the security situation and military operations against the Taliban with Premier Yousuf Raza Gilani and army chief Ashfaq Kayani.

Zardari, during the meeting with Gilani and Gen Kayani, said the “fight against militancy and terrorism would end with the complete elimination of militants.”

France’s Sarkozy laments ‘totally inhuman’ job

Paris, July 02: President Nicolas Sarkozy acknowledged making mistakes in an interview Wednesday but said in his defence that he faced “totally inhuman” demands as French head of state.

In the interview to Le Nouvel Observateur weekly, Sarkozy drew a distinction between the flashy first months of his presidency and his current toned-down style as he embarks on the second half of his five-year term.

“I made mistakes,” Sarkozy said when asked whether there were missteps during the first two years of his presidency.
