Revised Eamcet rank cards dispatched

Hyderabad, July 05: The officials of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological Universi ty today dispatched the revised rank cards for candidates seeking admission into agriculture, medical and engineering courses.

The rank lists have been revised as there was slight variation in the Eamcet 2009 ranks due to delay in submission of the Intermediate marks of some candidates by the authorities concerned.

Candidates can obtain further information from `www.apeamcet.org’ to know about the changes in the rank list.

BSF investigates blasts near Attari border

Attari (Punjab), July 05: The Border Security Force (BSF) is investigating two blasts that occurred in a village along the fenced border between India and Pakistan Saturday night.

BSF officials said two shells landed on the Indian side of the border in paddy fields of Dande village near the Attari-Wagah land border joint check post, 30 km from Amritsar city.

‘Villagers told our officials that two projectiles landed in the paddy fields last night,’ a BSF official, who visited the spot, told IANS.

Card-swipe gate to end airport immigration wait

Riyadh, July 05: The agonizing immigration line wait at Saudi international airports for arriving or departing passengers is set to end soon with the introduction of a quick-passage electronic gate equipped with a biometric reader.

Travelers have only to swipe their biometric immigration card at the gate and walk through – if their immigration requirements for exit or entry are automatically met.

The new biometrics system is based on the verification of the eye and fingerprints of the passenger.

India to prepare new rules to save its coastline

New Delhi, July 05: India is set to prepare new rules to save its 7,517 km coastline after deciding to let a controversial notification under attack from the fishing community to lapse.

The decision came after Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh told a delegation of fishermen here Thursday that existing regulations that date from 1991 would not be changed without consulting them. The fishermen’s objection was to the draft of the coastal management zone (CMZ) notification of 2008 which they alleged would displace their settlements along the beaches and halt fishing near the coast.

Calls in KSA for duties on China goods

Riyadh, July 05 Saudi petrochemicals producers said on Saturday they would seek duties on imports from China after Beijing began a dumping probe on petrochemical products from Saudi Arabia and three other countries.

Abdulrahman Al-Zamil, leading businessman and former deputy minister of commerce, said China had no grounds to pursue the dumping investigation on imports of methanol and butanediol (BDO) it launched in late June. “We do not subsidise our exporters” of petrochemicals, he told a news conference.

Engineering fee not to be hiked this year

Hyderabad, July 05: Providing the much-needed relief to both parents and the State government in these troubled times, the Admissions and Fee Regulatory Committee on Saturday ruled out a hike in the tuition fee for engineering and pharmacy courses.

The decision came as a pleasant surprise for students and their parents as a hike of about 10 per cent was expected.

Currently, the fee is fixed at Rs 30,200 under the convener quota and Rs 91,700 under the management quota for both engineering and pharmacy courses.

Fund crunch ousts contract staff

Kurnool, July 05: Fund crunch has seen contract workers in the Indiramma project retrenched. Despite being required for the tasks at hand, the government has had to bow to the inevitable. This move has rendered 198 jobless in the district while another 243 have been thrown out of work across the State. They were employed in phases on a contract basis. As many as 373 work inspectors and 68 data-entry operators were recruited on January 19, 2007 and had been drawing salary from the Housing Corporation.

Power cuts to stay for some more days

Hyderabad, July 05: As four power production units are experiencing technical problems, the APTransco is forced to go for loadshedding resulting in two to four-hour power cuts in the State for the last two days.

The power cuts may continue for another two days till the problems are overcome.

Advani wants ballot papers back, says EVMs can be rigged

New Delhi, July 05: Senior BJP leader LK Advani has expressed apprehensions about the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in elections, saying they are prone to rigging.

Govt targets 1,055 mn tonne annual coal production

New Delhi, July 05: To give a boost to thermal power generation, the government has set an annual coal production target of 1,055 million tonnes in the XIIth Five-Year Plan (2012-17).

The Coal Ministry has envisaged a production target of 1,055 million tonnes annually from the existing mines, completed projects, ongoing projects and new projects in the XIIth Plan period, according to official data.

Vietnam northern floods kill 15, dozen missing

Hanoi, July 05: Heavy rains triggering floods and landslides in mountainous northern regions of Vietnam have killed at least 15 people, destroyed houses and damaged roads, the government and state-run radio said on Sunday.

Landslides killed 13 people in Bac Kan province and another 11 were missing as of early Sunday, Voice of Vietnam radio said.

Landslides and floods cut off roads, telecommunications and power supply to a district in Bac Kan after heavy rains fell on Friday night, the government said in a disaster report.

Army building defences to protect troops from artillery shells

Kargil, July 05: In a bid to provide all-round protection to the troops in the Kargil-Drass sector, the Indian Army is building strong defences to protect them from being hit by enemy artillery shells and heavy weapon fire at the Line of Control (LoC).

“In order to strengthen our defences on ground and protecting our soldiers from enemy fire, we have built strong defences covered from all the sides, which can keep away enemy fire from our troops,” a senior Army officer at one of the forward bases on the Line of Control told PTI here.

Madhya Pradesh sets up special force to protect tigers

Bhopal, July 05: With its tiger population dwindling sharply over the last two years, a worried Madhya Pradesh government will deploy a Special Tiger Protection Force in its three tiger reserves of Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Pench to arrest the big cat’s worrying decline.

The state government took the decision as it does not want to lose its ‘Tiger State’ tag to Karnataka due to the falling number of the big cats, according to a forest department official. The number of tigers in the state is reported to have dropped from 300 in 2007 to 232 in 2009, he said.

Navy ‘won’t tolerate’ sailor sex contests

Melbourne, July 05: The Royal Australian Navy says it will not tolerate misconduct from its members, following allegations of a sex betting ring operating onboard an Australian Navy vessel.

The Navy has confirmed four members of the HMAS Success’s company were removed from the ship in Singapore in May after female crew members made complaints about the alleged sex game.

The sailors from HMAS Success reportedly ran a contest to see who could sleep with the most female crew members.

IDB allocates 91m euros to water project in Iran

Tehran, July 05: The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) has agreed to allocate 91 million euros to help implement a project to carry drinking water to the central city of Qom.

The loan offered by the IDB is part of a 325-million-euro budget needed to carry out the water project, Iran’s Finance Ministry declared.

The project, which aims at building a 175-km pipeline to carry water from Kouchari Dam to the city and surrounding villages, will take an estimated five years to complete.

The loan is to be repaid to the IDB over 15 years.

Warm, humid day ahead for Delhi

New Delhi, July 05: Delhiites can expect a warm and humid day Sunday as rains are likely to elude the capital yet again, the weatherman said.

“There will be mainly clear skies but it is possible that it could get cloudy towards the evening,” an official at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

“There has been no rain so far and none is expected in the day – so the warm and humid conditions would continue,” the official added.

The minimum temperature recorded Sunday was 27 degrees Celsius while the maximum forecast for the day is 38 degrees.

Had no plans to absolve Advani: Justice Liberhan

New Delhi, July 05: Justice MS Liberhan on Saturday denied allegations that the commission headed by him — which probed the reasons for the demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya 17 years ago — wanted to absolve BJP leader L.K. Advani of all blame since the beginning.

Hindustan Times contacted Liberhan following a revelation by advocate Anupam Gupta, the commission counsel between 1999 and 2007 that the judge was not even in favour of issuing summons to Advani for appearing before the commission.

Met officials predict heavy rains in Mumbai

Mumbai, July 05: Predicting heavy rainfall for the second-consecutive day coupled with high tides, the Bhihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) civic body has geared up to avoid water-logging in the city and its suburbs.

“Though there is no fresh heavy downpour, our men are on the field and are ready to drain out rain water as heavy rainfall is expected over the next 24 hours,” a civic official said.

The City will experience two high tides today — one in the afternoon with 4.7 meters height and the other at night with 3.39 mertres height.

Rafsanjani denies power struggle in Iran following crisis

Tehran, July 05: Former Iranin president Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani has denied that there was any power struggle in the country following the crisis triggered by alleged fraud in the June 12 presidential election, ISNA news agency reported.

The election scene was a competition within the system and should not be considered by some as a power struggle or crack in the system,” Rafsanjani was quoted by ISNA as saying in his first reaction to the post-election turmoil Saturday.
