Army officer among three dead in Pithoragarh

Pithoragarh, July 28: Three persons including one Army officer died near Devalthal, 32 kms from here, when the car they were travelling in fell into a deep gorge, police said today. The car was on its way to Pithoragarh from Thal town.

The dead include Santosh Karki of Pithoragarh and Lt. Naveen Karki and Ajay Yadav from Lucknow.

The police and medical team have been rushed to the spot and the arrangements to recover the bodies from the gorge are on way. They are having a tough time due to heavy rains, police said.

High drama in J-K: CM’s resignation rejected

Srinagar, July 28: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday resigned from the post after a senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader alleged that he was involved in the Srinagar sex scandal.

However, Governor NN Vohra refused to accept the resignation and asked Omar to stay on till the probe on the matter is over.

In his resignation letter, Omar had asked Vohra to initiate an enquiry into the allegations levelled against him within a specified time frame.

Court orders FIR against Rakhi, five others

Jaipur, July 28: A local court today asked the police to register an FIR against six persons including item girl Rakhi Sawant, actor Ravi Kishan and a top official of a leading channel for allegedly stealing the concept of a marriage-based TV reality show from a private portal. Judicial Magistrate No 27 Shilpa Sameer directed the Karni Nagar police station in the city to register an FIR against the six including Sawant for alleged breach of copyright by lifting the concept of Swayamvar from the portal of a Pink City-based ”struggling” writer Gaurav Tiwari.

Scribe dies in road accident in HP

Sundernagar, July 28: A correspondent of a regional daily died today, when the car he was driving, fell into a deep gorge near Hanogi temple on Kullu-Mandi road, police said. Manmohan Sharma (38), the Kullu correspondent of Hindi daily ”Divya Himachal”, was driving to Mandi when the accident occurred, police said.

Sharma is survived by his wife and daughter. Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal joined journalists across the state in expressing grief over the death of Sharma.

HC nod for polytechnic classes in engg colleges

Hyderabad July 28: In a blow to polytechnic colleges, the AP High Court on Monday permitted engineering colleges to introduce evening classes for polytechnic students. Justice G Rohini vacated the stay granted in a petition filed by Private Polytechnics Management Association. The counsel for the Government contended that there had been a phenomenal growth of technical institutions in the country. However, the polytechnic education has been lagging behind the degree-level education in engineering.

Friendly senior who turned evil attacker

Hyderabad, July 28: When MBA student Roopa Devi was offered help in her studies by her senior, she thought it was just a ‘friendly’ gesture.

She never had an inkling about the evil intentions he had. The second year MBA student of Dhruva College of Management at Medchal, 21-year Roopa Devi of Yanam, who was attacked at her hostel by her senior Bhanu, on Sunday night, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital. Her condition is said to be stable.

Police said Bhanu came to the hostel with a pre-planned motive to harm Roopa Devi, if she turned down his advances.

BTech graduate burgles houses, steals laptops

Hyderabad, July 28: A BTech graduate, who also worked as an assistant director in some Telugu movies was arrested along with his associate for committing 55 burglaries at houses. Police recovered 34 laptops, 66 tola gold and silver articles and other valuables all worth Rs 40 lakh from them. The accused, however, could not sell all the stolen laptops due to the slump in the IT sector.

ABVP students stage rasta roko at OU

Hyderabad, July 28: In what appears to be a counterdefensive measure to avoid disciplinary action by the Osmania Law College authorities, the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad members of the college held a demonstration alleging that some of the senior students belonging to the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) had indulged in ragging. Demanding suspension of some students belonging to the NSUI, who were involved in a clash on July 24, ABVP student members carried out fierce protests resulting in a tense situation at the college.

Iran’s leader shuts down Tehran prison in wake of election protests

Tehran, July 28: Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has ordered the closure of a prison in southern Tehran, state media reported Tuesday amid concerns about the fate of protestors arrested in the wake of last month’s contested presidential election.

Parliament deputy Kazem Jalali told the Mehr news agency that the leader ordered the Kahrizak detention centre shut down because it lacked the necessary standards for preserving detainees’ rights.

Kahrizak is said to be the main place where the election protestors were held and where some of them also died in mysterious ways.

Two pipeline workers buried alive

Hyderabad, July 28: In a tragic incident, two workers were buried alive under the loose soil that caved in during sewer pipeline laying works at Ramanthapur on Monday evening. The incident took place at Indira Nagar opposite the Ramanthapur lake. The Rs 6.5 crore works to lay 35 sewer pipes passing through Ramanthapur were awarded to IVR Constructions Limited which dug up a 20-foot trench to lay the pipelines.

The construction company had already installed 23 pipes and works to lay the remaining 12 are underway.

2 held in fake IT job scam

Hyderabad, July 28: Two fraudsters, who duped unemployed youth by promising jobs in reputed IT companies through backdoor entry, were nabbed on Monday. The accused collected more than Rs 10 lakh from job seekers.

Task Force sleuths nabbed the duo, Arshad Naveed of Mahaboobnagar and P Karthik Laxmikanth of Safilguda, for cheating job aspirants.

Task Force DCP V B Kamalasan Reddy said that Arshad Naveed, a graduate, earlier worked in the MaFoi Management Consultancy at Himayathnagar but was removed after a year for failing to reach targets.

Hyundai workers end strike after reaching deal with management

Chennai, July 28: The six-day workers’ strike at the Hyundai Motor plant near here came to an end Tuesday following an agreement between employees and the company management.

The agreement has been signed in the presence of Labour Minister T.M. Anbarasan at the state secretariat, a company official said.

‘The agreement between the union representatives and the management was signed this evening. We have agreed to bring back here the nine transferred workers,’ Rajiv Mitra, head of corporate communications, told IANS.

No decision on arms deal with India: PM Nepal

Kathmandu, July 28: Amid the Maoist blockade of the Nepalese parliament over the issue of arms import from India, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal today said his government has no plans to seek lethal weapons from New Delhi. The Prime Minister issued the statement in the Parliament after the Maoists blocked the Parliament session on Sunday and yesterday over the issue of reported arms import from India.

The Prime Minister also said his cabinet has not taken any decision to import arms from India. After the Prime Minister”s clarification the stalled Parliament session resumed today.
