Hyderabad, july 29: In remarks that could kick up a row ahead of the GHMC elections, Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy on Tuesday vowed to work as per the wishes of the late Congressman Kasu Brahmananda Reddy.

Embedded in the seemingly innocuous assertion is a clear-cut stand on the contentious issue of separate Telangana. Kasu Brahmananda Reddy, the former chief minister, had strongly opposed bifurcation of the State in the late 60s and 70s and had even resigned from office to prevent any such possibility.

Assam to ban corporal punishment in schools

Guwahati, July 29: The Assam government will soon introduce legislation banning corporal punishment in schools after a Unicef report said the state topped the list of Indian schools where corporal punishment and humiliation of students was rampant.

‘We shall very soon ban corporal punishment in schools as such a system to rein in students has become obsolete and often leads to adverse impact on the students’ mental well being and trauma,’ Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told IANS.

A Unicef study said 99.56 percent of students in Assam schools were victims of corporal punishment.

Madhya Pradesh teacher held for molesting minor students

Bhopal, July 29: A teacher accused of molesting tribal girl students of Class 3 and 5 was arrested Wednesday in Vidisha district of Madhya Pradesh, police said.

Sanjeev Sharma, posted in a school run under the Shiksha Guarantee Scheme in tribal-dominated Nupur Tapra village, had July 24 stripped girls in a closed room under the pretext of taking measurement for their school uniform.

Vidisha is the home district of the Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Hero Honda net jumps 83 percent

New Delhi, July 29: Two-wheeler major Hero Honda Motors Wednesday reported 83 percent jump in profits to Rs.500 crore ($103 million) for the quarter ended June 30 as compared to Rs.272.8 crore in the like period last year.
The total income surged 33.7 percent to Rs.3,864 crore from Rs.2,890 crore, the company said in a regulatory statement.
Hero Honda’s total turnover grew to Rs.3,822.4 crore in the quarter from Rs.2,851 crore a year ago, reporting a growth of 34 percent.

Bharti Airtel reduces its Broadband Tariffs

Mumbai, July 29: The Bharti Airtel has challenged the Indian Broadband market by cutting the cost in their Broadband tariffs.

As from now the internet user would able to surf at a 1Mbps speed by paying just Rs. 1,699, which is Rs. 100 more than the current 512 Kbps tariff. As From now the 512Kbps tariff will cost Rs. 1,099 which is Rs. 200 more than 256Kbps tariff.

Union opposes British Council plan to outsource jobs to India

London, July 29: Britain’s civil service union has opposed plans to outsource more than 100 finance and IT British Council jobs to India, fearing it could set a precedent in government departments, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The Times said 500 of the 1,300 jobs at the British Council, the quasi-government department that promotes British culture and language abroad, “would have to go” in the next 18 months to save 45 million pounds.

New Delhi, July 29: Olympic bronze medallist Vijender Singh said the country’s highest sporting honour – Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna– will spur him to make a fresh beginning in boxing.

‘It is a dream come true for me. My journey has just begun. I am not going to stop here. Khel Ratna is the highest honour for a sportserson and it could not have come at a better time before the World Championships in September. It will motivate me to perform well there,’ Vijender told IANS.

Reliance Power posts Rs.100 crore net profit

New Delhi, July 29: Reliance Power has posted a net profit of Rs.100.56 crore ($21 million) for the quarter ended June 30 as against Rs.59.7 crore reported in the like period last year.
The total income has increased to Rs.144.24 crore from Rs.77.67 crore, the company said in a statement.

The company posted a consolidated net profit of Rs.263 crore for the quarter as compared to Rs.61 crore reported in the corresponding period last year.

Schools asked not to shut after swine flu reports

New Delhi, July 29: The Indian health ministry Wednesday asked educational institutes not to shut but take preventive measures to control the swine flu spread and advised students to avoid study tours to the infected countries.
An official circular said: “Given the current magnitude of the spread of A(H1N1) infection and the fact that the virus is fairly mild, closure of educational institutions on account of any student/staff member falling ill with flu like symptoms is not recommended.”

Reliance Natural Resources net surges 7.4 percent

Mumbai, July 29: The Anil Ambani-led Reliance Natural Resources Ltd (RNRL) Wednesday reported 7.4 percent surge in its net profit to Rs.17.2 crore ($3.5 million) for the quarter ended June 30 as compared to Rs.16 crore in the like period last year.
Total income increased 24 percent to Rs.115.4 crore from Rs.92.9 crore, the company said in a regulatory statement.

Earlier in the day, RNRL chairman Anil Ambani said his company had served notice to both the petroleum ministry and Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) seeking an early settlement of the ongoing dispute between the two companies.

BJP infighting delaying Commonwealth Games projects: Congress

New Delhi, July 29: Infighting within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is ruling the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), has been causing delays in projects related to the 2010 Commonwealth Games to be hosted here, the Congress said Wednesday.

Jai Kishan Sharma, the leader of opposition in the MCD, has written to Lt-Governor Tejendra Khanna seeking his intervention to speed up the projects.

According to Sharma, the civic agency has constituted several special and ad-hoc committees for carrying out the Games works.

Wanted criminal gunned down in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, July 29: A criminal was gunned down here Wednesday in a shootout in which six police officers were injured, police said.
When police teams were checking vehicles along the National Highway 24, three men refused to stop their motor-cycles and opened fire at police, circle officer R.K. Gautam said.

Station officer D.C. Tiwari and two constable sustained bullet injuries in the firing, which prompted retaliatory firing from police, he said.

Maoist violence prevents tiger count in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, July 29: Maoist violence in Bastar region has prevented the Chhattisgarh government from carrying out a count of tigers, the state assembly was informed Wednesday.
Forest Minister Vikram Usendi told the assembly in a written reply that the count of tigers of the Indravati tiger project had not been undertaken for several years as the area is dominated by Maoists rebels.

The Indravati project is based in Bijapur district in restive Bastar region, some 500 km south from capital Raipur.

Egyptian experts to help conserve mummy in Hyderabad museum

Hyderabad, July 29: Expert assistance from Egypt is finally on its way to conserve an Egyptian mummy dating back to 2,500 BC at a museum here.
The mummy, believed to be of Nasihu, daughter of sixth Pharaoh of Egypt, is on display at the Andhra Pradesh State Archaeological Museum here since 1930 but is now decaying.

A two-member team from the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), Egypt, will visit Hyderabad for conservation of the mummy.

Ban on cremation smoke and smells in South Australia

Australia, July 29: SMOKE and smells from the cremation of bodies will be banned after an investigation by the environment protection authority found both were allowed to be discharged under present rules in South Australia.
The authority investigated 10 crematoriums after an industry expert complained about confusion created by strict monitoring of emissions in the burning of medical waste while human and animal bodies were allowed to be cremated without monitoring what was released from smoke stacks.

Two speed cameras net $7 million a year for NSW Government

Australia, July 29: NEW South Wales’ nastiest speed trap has caught out 71,288 motorists and raised millions for a Government which loves revenue from fines.

Two cameras pointing each way on one pole at Cleveland St, in Sydney’s Moore Park, netted more than $7 million from June 2008 to June this year.

It is the biggest revenue haul of any set of cameras at a time when revenue has dropped by more than $17 million across the state compared with the same time last year, The Daily Telegraph reports.
