Motion to impeach Justice Dinakaran gathers momentum

New Delhi, December 13:The move to seek the impeachment of Karnataka High Court Chief Justice P.D. Dinakaran has gathered momentum with more than 50 Rajya Sabha members signing a petition seeking his removal.

This development comes as the Supreme Court panel of five senior-most judges and the union government have tacitly decided not to elevate Justice Dinakaran to the apex court.

Man kills senior citizen for ‘eyeing’ his wife

New Delhi, December 13:A 27-year-old man has been arrested for murdering his former employer’s father, who, he suspected, had “bad intentions” towards his wife and was also pressing him to pay back a loan, police said.

Mukesh Kumar was arrested Saturday for killing Devender Kumar Marwah, 68, at his first-floor house in Rajouri Garden area Dec 4. He had earlier worked as driver for Marwah’s son, who stays on the ground floor.

Mukesh Kumar, who lives near Marwah’s photostat shop in Kirti Nagar, was a regular visitor to the house.

Iraq attacks do not signal return to post-Saddam era

Rome, December 10:The devastating bomb attacks that struck Baghdad this week do not signal a return to the instability witnessed in the country after the fall of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in 2003, an Italian terrorism expert said.

Stefano Dambruoso, Italy’s best known anti-terrorism expert, told AKI: “Compared with the instability of the country when the United States and allied forces had a massive military presence, today we can say that a period of stabilisation of the country is well underway.”

Britain loses 100th soldier of the year in Afghanistan

London, December 08: Britain lost its 100th soldier in fighting so far in 2009 in Afghanistan, the defence ministry reported Monday evening.

The ministry said the soldier was killed in Helmand province in the south of the country.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown expressed his condolences and said the “entire nation” stood by the families and friends of all 100 soldiers killed so far in 2009, a year which already has been the bloodiest for the military since the 1982 Falklands War.

Assembly to pass resolution on Hyderabad

Hyderabad, December 06:The state government has decided to pass a resolution in the Assembly in the ensuing winter session urging the Centre to withdraw clause 14(F) from the Presidential Order that would end the controversy over Hyderabad Free Zone. It also decided to withdraw criminal cases filed against the TRS Chief, Mr K Chandrasekhara Rao (KCR) in connection with his fast-unto-death.

Telangana lawyers to boycott courts

Hyderabad, December 06: The Joint Action Committee of Telangana Lawyers has decided to boycott courts all over the Telangana region, including High Court, in support of the Telangana Bandh called by the Telangana Rashtra Samthi. The JAC also decided to launch relay hunger strike from December 7 on the High Court premises.

Speaking to media persons here on Sunday, the JAC president, Mr C. Damodar Reddy, condemned police lathi-charge on the agitating students and others in the Telangana region.

Jeev finishes sixth at Nippon Series JT Cup

Tokyo, December 06:The putting form that put Jeev Milkha Singh in line for his third Nippon Series JT Cup in four years deserted him Sunday as he ended with a round of even par 72 and finished sixth, as Shigeki Maruyama got his first win since returning full time to the Japanese tour.

Jeev’s putts just did not fall as he started with five pars before finding his first birdie on the sixth. He turned in one-under and then dropped two straight bogeys on 10th and 11th and there ended his chances. Just one more birdie on the 16th saw him finish at 72 and at five-under 275 he was fifth.

Cause of Delhi car fire still unclear, survivor unconscious

New Delhi, December 06:A day after a woman was charred to death after her car suddenly caught fire on a south Delhi road, police were Sunday still trying to ascertain the cause. Her husband, who sustained severe burns, is still unconscious.

The woman identified as Shubha, 32, was burnt alive when the couple’s Maruti Wagon-R car suddenly caught fire on Nelson Mandela Road. Her husband, S.K. Kanji, who was driving sustained 70 percent burns.

Madhukar Pichhad is new Maharashtra NCP chief

Mumbai, December 06:Former Maharashtra opposition leader and ex-minister Madhukar Pichhad took over as the state Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief replacing R.R. Patil here Sunday, a party leader said.

Pichhad’s appointment comes in the wake of Patil taking over as state home minister last month.

According to a party office-bearer, Narendra Verma has been appointed as Mumbai NCP chief at meeting held here Sunday afternoon.

Verma replaces Sachin Aher, who has joined the government as a minister of state, the office-bearer said.

21 killed in Bangladesh accident

Dhaka, December 06:At least 21 people were killed and 45 injured when two buses collided head-on in western Bangladesh Sunday, police said.

The accident occurred in Koidubi, Faridpur district, some 60 km west of the capital Dhaka.

Sixteen people died at the scene, while others succumbed to their injuries in the hospital, according to an officer at Bhanga police station.

Fifteen of the 24 people, who were admitted to the Faridpur Medical College Hospital, were seriously injured.

Amar Singh accuses Congress of misusing CBI

New Delhi, December 06:The Samajwadi Party Sunday accused the central government of misusing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for favouring “persons close to the party.”

Party general secretary Amar Singh said Sunday that cases against Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi were withdrawn based on the advice of the solicitor general but the advice of the attorney general in a case against Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav had been ignored.

“It is not Central Bureau of Investigation but Congress Bureau of Investigation,” he said.

Telangana violence scaring investors: Rosaiah

Hyderabad, December 06:Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah Sunday said violence by protestors demanding a separate state for the Telangana region had scared away investors.

“Incidents of violence can impact investment,” Rosaiah told reporters, adding: “They have already created some concern in the information technology sector.”

The chief minister also appealed to Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao to call off his fast-unto-death, which entered the eighth day Sunday.

FBI team coming to India Monday with Headley information

New Delhi, December 06:A Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) team is arriving in India Monday on a two-day visit with “key information” on Pakistan-born suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operatives David Coleman Headley and Tahawwur Rana presently in US custody, a top official said here Sunday.

“The FBI team is visiting India on Dec 7 and 8. We hope they have lots of key information about the two terror suspects,” the official said without divulging any detail.

Hans Blix, who led the UN weapons inspection team in the run-up to the 2003 invasion, told the Daily Mail that the then US and British leaders had “misled themselves and then they misled the public” about the reason for the conflict.

Criminal burnt to death in Uttar Pradesh
