Steve Waugh foundation ties up with 6up

New Delhi, June 19: The Steve Waugh Foundation Global launched on Friday, announced their association with 6UP, hosts of the ‘runs per over’ SMS game played via mobile.

The game had been launched during IPL-2 and was subsequently taken off after India’s sports minister M S Gill expressed reservations about the game and how it could bring in elements of betting and match-fixing.

But at the official launch here on Friday, 6UP founder George Tomeski said all such fears had been dispelled.

Ranatunga slams BCCI over IPL scheduling

Colombo, June 19: Arjuna Ranatunga, the former Sri Lankan captain, has said the BCCI “sacrificed national interest” and hurt India’s chances at the ICC World Twenty20 by giving the IPL more importance.

His comments come soon after India coach Gary Kirsten blamed the fatigue caused by the IPL and the minor injuries picked up during the tournament for the team’s lacklustre showing at the World Twenty20.

Woman fined 1.9 million dollars for illegal download

Washington, June 19: A court in the United States laid down a 1.9-million-dollar fine against a Minnesota woman who illegally downloaded 24 songs from the internet, CNN reported.

The trial against Jammie Thomas-Rasset was the first case in the United States for such copyright infringement, CNN quoted her lawyer as saying.

The 32-year-old mother of four was shocked by the fine as the price tag for legally downloading the songs that would have cost 99 cents each and planned to appeal, he said.

US passenger plane lands safely after pilot dies

Washington, June 19: A Continental airlines pilot died at the controls of a plane en route from Brussels to Newark, New Jersey.

The two first officers onboard, who have extensive experience flying the Boeing 777, landed the plane Thursday with 247 passengers on board in Newyork, according to broadcast images.

The plane was met by emergency vehicles in response to what CNN said was a “declared emergency”.

CNN quoted a statement from Continental that the 61-year-old captain of the flight died of natural causes while piloting the plane.

Pregnant woman run over by train

Lucknow, June 19: A pregnant woman was killed as two GRP constables allegedly pushed her out of a moving train following a tiff with her husband at a station in Lakhimpur Kheri district late on Thursday afternoon.

An angry mob of passengers later assaulted and injured the erring constables. The injured cops are admitted at the Kheri district hospital.

Man kills lover after she refuses to give money for liquor

Rajkot, June 19: A man allegedly poisoned his lover after she refused to give him money to buy more liquor in Bhavnagar, police said.

The man was under the influence of liquor when the incident took place.

The man, Usman Rehma Meer, was allegedly having an extramarital affair with Noorjahan Kapadia (35), a mother of two children.

Sources said Noorjahan, a resident of Banuben Ni Waadi, was found unconscious outside the Bhavnagar Civil Hospital on Thursday morning.

Woman gang raped in moving SUV

Bhopal, June 18: A married woman from Mumbai was sexually assualted by three people in a moving Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) in the Madhya Pradesh capital last night, police said today.

Additional Superintendent of Police Santosh Singh Gaur told UNI that last around 2100 hrs last night a woman and her husband, who came here to visit Sant Asaram Bapu Ashram at Gandhi Nagar area here from Mumbai, asked for a lift from a SUV. There were a total of four people, including driver, in the vehicle.

Woman cashier foils robbery, shot at

Mohali, June 18: A bid to rob a bank in Mohali was foiled on Wednesday morning after a woman cashier, in her mid-40s, raised an alarm. However, in the melee, the robbers fired at the cashier, Parminder Kaur, who sustained a bullet injury on head, DSP (City-II) Swarandeep Singh told Newsline.

Before the incident, the robbers had waited for over an hour for Kaur to arrive, as she had the keys of the bank’s chest, the police said.
