Little time to savour T20 win, says angry Afridi

Karachi, June 24: The short gap between the recently concluded ICC World Twenty20 and the next edition in the West Indies in April 2010 has robbed Pakistan of the chance to fully savour the triumph, the allrounder Shahid Afridi has said.

“I fail to understand why the next World Cup will be played in nine months time,” Afridi told reporters on arrival in Karachi. “If it was being organised after two years, people would have remembered Pakistan’s victory and it would have been more enjoyable.”

Iran Air Force wraps up Persian Gulf drill

Tehran, June 24: Iran’s Air Force has successfully conducted the final phase of a large aerial maneuver over the Persian Gulf.

“At the final stage of the aerial maneuver, dubbed Milad-Noor-Velayat, on Wednesday, fighters of the Iranian Air Force successfully hit predetermined targets to test new domestically-made armaments,” Air Force pilot Brigadier Hossein Chit-Foroush, spokesman for the maneuver, told reporters.

Mumbai, June 24: Priyanka Chopra is a “good actress” but daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai was more deserving of the best actress award for her work in “Jodhaa Akbar” at the 10th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) (awards) in Macau, says Jaya Bachchan.

“For all I know she must be really good in ‘Fashion’. I haven’t seen it. But I’ve seen Priyanka’s work in ‘Dostana’ and liked it. She’s undoubtedly a good actress,” Jaya told IANS.

New South Wales to approach Afridi

London, June 24: Shahid Afridi, who guided Pakistan to glory in the Twenty20 World Cup, may soon receive an offer to play in Sheffield Shield for the Australian domestic side New South Wales.

The 29-year-old cricketer helped Pakistan win their first major title in 17 years by beating their sub-continental rival Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the final at Lord’s on Sunday.

“He is clearly one of the world’s best Twenty20 players, but also he would be a valuable addition to our dressing room, our young players would learn a lot from him.”

Shahrukh doesn’t want to work with Ashutosh

London, June 24: Shane Warne, the former Australian legspinner, has said the decision to leave out Michael Vaughan from the pre-Ashes camp was a blunder given his wealth of experience as a former Ashes-winning captain.

Vaughan has made only 147 runs at 21.00 for Yorkshire this season and the chief selector Geoff Miller said he would have to make runs consistently in the county season to force his way back.

Zardari rejects British PM’s remarks

Islamabad, June 24: The Pakistani president has rejected British Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s description of the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan as the ‘crucible for global terrorism.’

“I think sometimes people say things they don’t understand or mean but I think his concern is genuine and I appreciate the concern,” Asif Ali Zardari told ITV’s News at Ten.

He also denied any knowledge of militant training camps in Pakistan, saying it was an “old thought” among British intelligence that thousands of radicals were arriving in Britain.

About 20 raped in failed prison break in Congo

Kinshasa, June 24: Two people were killed and 12 others injured in the Democratic Republic of Congo when prison inmates who tried to escape detonated two grenades.

About 20 female prisoners were also raped during the failed prison break attempt, according to Congo’s attorney general.

The female prisoners were raped when male prisoners in the prison in Goma in eastern Congo failed to break through the prison’s walls, Oscar Kasangandjo said on Tuesday.

The prisoners attacked the pavilion where the female prisoners were being held and raped around 20 of them, he added.

Woman constable murdered at home

Punjab, June 24: A woman constable of Punjab Home Guards was stabbed to death, allegedly by her uncle, at her house in Kila Mohalla on Tuesday afternoon. The accused was caught by area residents as he tried to flee after the crime.

Constable Neelam Rani (36) was posted at the Division Number 8 police station. Mother of a 17-year-old son, she was reportedly separated from her husband.

Accountant robbed of Rs 5 lakh in Lucknow

Lucknow, June 22: An accountant at a bread company was robbed of Rs five lakh by armed marauders in Bazaar Khala area of Uttar Pradesh capital this afternoon.

Police said the robbery happened when Rajaram was going to deposit the amount in a bank.

The miscreants fled after snatching the money bag near Tikaitrai pond.

Germany to expel 8,000 PKK supporters

Berlin, June 22: The German government puts an end to its support for some 8,000 PKK supporters by ordering them to leave the country as soon as possible.

The supporters of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) who had managed to get into Germany to take refuge have received a letter from the country’s Federal Ministry of the Interior to leave the country because there is no evidence to show that Kurdish citizens are in danger or “under pressure” in Turkey, Hurriyet newspaper reported.

Turkey supports Iran’s stability

Ankara, June 22: Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has said Iran’s stability has a profound impact on the stability of the whole region.

The Turkish minister made the remarks while meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov on Sunday evening.

“Iran is our very important neighbor. Stability in Iran has great influence on the stability of the whole region. Turkey will support every step taken in this direction,” Davutoglu said.

Malik hails ”awesome” Afridi

London, June 22: Former captain Shoaib Malik has hailed all-rounder Shahid Afridi for his superlative efforts, which saw Pakistan crowned as the new Twenty20 World champions.

Afridi smashed his way to an unbeaten 54 off 40 balls, his second consecutive half-century, while Malik scored an unbeaten 24 as the duo shared a match-winning partnership of 76 runs to help Pakistan thump Sri Lanka by eight wickets.

”It was a pressure match. When I walked out to the wicket I was thinking I have to stay until the 20th over,” an euphoric Shoaib said after the historic triumph yesterday.
