AP Minister escapes unhurt after dais caves in

Vijayawada, June 29: Andhra Pradesh Finance Minister K Rosiah escaped unhurt when a dais on which he was standing suddenly caved in at Mylavaram in Krishna District last evening.

Party Sources told UNI that Mr Roasiah was in Mylavaram in connection with unveiling statue of former Congress MLA Chanumolu Venkat Rao.

As soon as the minister climbed on the two-foot stage, there was a mad rush among Congress leaders and workers to greet him after Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal invited them to the dais. As the stage could not withstand the weight, it suddenly caved in.

NKorea slams Hawaii missile deployment

Pyongyang, June 29: North Korea has condemned the US for stationing missile defense systems around Hawaii, deeming the move warmongering of Washington’s forces.

“Through the US forces’ clamorous movements, it has been brought to light that the US attempt to launch a pre-emptive strike on our republic has become a brutal fact,” North Korea’s main newspaper Rodong Sinmun said in a commentary on Monday.

Larijani to Obama: Stop ‘interfering’ in ME affairs

Tehran, June 29: Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has recommended the US administration to abandon its “interfering” policies and respect rights of all nations.

“This change will be beneficial both to the region and to the US itself,” Larijani said in an address to the 21st Executive Committee meeting of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States in Algerian capital Algiers on Sunday.

“Terrorism and occupation are two sides of a coin. Islamic countries should try to make occupiers cease their occupation in order to put an end to terrorism,” he added.

Colombo, June 29: West Indies captain Chris Gayle found Brian Lara’s shadow in rookie Darren Bravo and felt the youngster did a good job in his debut match against India.

Gayle said Bravo not only has a technique which reminds him of that of Lara but the youngster also resembles the left-handed batting great in his appearance.

Iraq blames Arab states for bombings

Baghdad, June 28: Iraq’s prime minister blames Arab states for fanning the flames of violence in his country by turning a blind eye to the rulings of hard-line religious leaders.

As US troops are preparing to leave the Iraqi cities, there has been a wave of deadly terrorist attacks, which has killed hundreds of Iraqis.

Nouri al-Maliki did not mention any country or group by name, but said, “There are states, which are silent on fatwas (Islamic decrees) urging killings and branding others as infidels,” Iraq’s Azzaman newspaper reported on Saturday.

Obama to fund anti-govt. elements in Iran: Report

Washington, June 28: US President Barack Obama is re-branding a Bush-era plan to fund anti-government Iran-based elements through domestic and foreign entities, a report says.

The Obama White House has apparently refused to act on the former administration’s decision to allocate USD 66 million to Iranian dissidents, devising a new approach instead, USA TODAY reported on Friday.

His team has demanded that an additional USD 15 million be pumped into the Near Eastern Regional Democracy Initiative which addresses related issues in the region.

14-yr-old girl kidnapped, raped in Junagadh; escapes from captivity

Surat, June 28: Yet another case of kidnap and rape of a minor girl has surfaced in the city within a span of 15 days. A minor girl was kidnapped from the Punagam area in Surat on Tuesday and was allegedly raped in Junagadh.

The 14-year-old girl, a resident of Punagam, had left home on Tuesday telling her parents that she was going to the diamond firm in Varachha where she worked.

But when she failed to return till night, her parents began a search. They went to the diamond firm and asked the manager about her, who told them that she had not come to work on Tuesday.

I’d love to work with dad again: Akshaye Khanna

New Delhi, June 28: Akshaye Khanna shared screen space with his dad Vinod Khanna in his debut film “Himalay Putra” 12 years ago.

The actor is now longing to act with the veteran thespian once again.

“I would love to (act with my father). Dad is a superb actor and my idol. At the moment there is no project in the pipeline… let’s hope somebody would come to us with a fantastic script that would do justice to him as an actor,” Akshaye told IANS in an email interview.

Iran’s Moussavi rejects partial vote recount

Tehran, June 28: Iranian opposition leader Mir Hossein Moussavi Saturday refused to support a panel set up by the electoral watchdog Guardian Council to conduct a partial recount of votes in the disputed presidential election, a media report said.

Refusing to be cowed by attacks on his party offices, Moussavi again demanded for fresh polls.

“Limiting the probe into complaints about electoral irregularities to recounting 10 percent of the ballot boxes cannot attract people’s trust and convince public opinion about the results,” Moussavi said on his campaign website.

Swat operation nears end, says Gilani

Karachi, June 28: Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said the military operation in the Swat Valley is nearing end as the top rung militants there have been killed and the government would now focus on the development of the region, the Online News Agency said Saturday.

He made the remarks while inaugurating a Textile City here.

He said the military operation against Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud will continue till he is captured.

The Pakistani leader said the government has formulated the country’s first textile policy that will help create jobs.

BCCI to finalise schedule on July 1

New Delhi, June 27: The domestic and international schedule at home for the coming season will be finalised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) when its Tours Programmes and Fixtures Committee meets here on July 1.

“This is the first meeting of the committee since it was formed,” said one of the members of the panel headed by BCCI Vice-President Lalit Modi.

The Aussies are to play a best-of-seven ODI series, in October-November, which will be followed by a full tour by Sri Lanka, comprising three Tests and five ODIs, in November-December.

Minor fire in Mumbai’s Taj Mahal hotel

Mumbai, June 27: A minor fire engulfed the upper floors of the heritage building of the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel here Saturday afternoon, fire brigade officials said. No casualties were reported.

“We have sent four fire tenders and eight water tankers to battle the blaze. Efforts are on in full swing to control the fire. We are awaiting more information,” the official said.

The hotel was one of the main targets during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

Lanka to host India, New Zealand in ODI tri-series in Aug

Colombo, June 27: India and New Zealand will fly out to Sri Lanka to play a tri-nation ODI series in August this year, ahead of the Champions Trophy.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) secretary Nishantha Ranatunga said the tournament, which would be an unscheduled one in the Sri Lankan cricket calendar, is expected to take place from August 4 or 6. The agreement was reached among the Sri Lankan, Indian and New Zealand officials during their representatives’ visit to London for the ICC meeting this week.

Unveiled, Maya’s creations far from complete

Lucknow, June 27: Seven of the 15 memorial projects, Chief Minister Mayawati hastily dedicated to public on Thursday evening, are still incomplete. On Friday, work was going on at most of these projects. In case of two of these, only the foundation has been constructed.

When asked about why the incomplete projects were inaugurated, UP Rajkiya Nirman Nigam (UPRNN) Managing Director CP Singh and Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) Joint Director SB Mishra refused to comment.

While LDA is the nodal agency for these projects, UPRNN is executing the projects.

Woman says rape charge against cops was fabricated

New Delhi, June 27: The 35-year-old woman, who had accused policemen of raping her, has gone back on her words.

She brought allegations against five officers, including the station house officer (SHO) of the Inderpuri police station, in order to save her husband from arrest, she has said.

The woman from Southwest Delhi’s Inderpuri appeared before a magistrate in Dwarka court on Friday and recorded her statement under Section 164 of CrPC, admitting “she was not sexually assaulted.”
