The actor boarded the next flight out, and reached Mumbai at 3.30 the following morning. He headed straight for the shoot, which was to begin at 9 am on the outskirts of Mumbai.

Washington, July 01: US President Barack Obama hails the withdrawal of US forces from Iraqi towns and cities as a “milestone” but warns of the “difficult days” he believes are yet to come.

Obama late Tuesday touched on the US military success in meeting a June 30 deadline to complete its pullout from urban areas and hand over full control to local security forces ahead of its planned departure from Iraqi soil by 2012.

Strauss warns Flintoff over discipline

London, July 01: Former England skipper Nasser Hussain praised Michael Vaughan as “one of the very best England captains” Wednesday, the day after he announced he was retiring from the sport.

Uncertainty over India’s tri-series in Lanka

New Delhi, July 01: Sri Lanka Cricket’s Interim Committee is still not clear over India’s plans for the forthcoming triangular series also involving India and New Zealand.

The Sri Lankan cricket board recently announced the inclusion of India in an already finalised bilateral series with New Zealand.

When announced, BCCI secretary N Srinivasan had only mentioned that India had been invited to play in the triangular which would provide them with preparation for the Champions Trophy in late September.

London, July 01: England captain Andrew Strauss heaped praise on Michael Vaughan, who announced his retirement on Tuesday, saying his predecessor’s ability to outwit opponents set him apart from the crowd.

“I count Michael as a good friend as well as a team-mate and I know what a tough decision this will have been for him as he took so much pleasure and pride in representing his country,” said Strauss.

The 34-year-old Vaughan decided to cut short his career after failing to make the cut for the Ashes series against Australia.

PCB unhappy with FTP proposed by BCCI

Karachi, July 01: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is unhappy with the Future Tours Programme (FTP) drafted by its Indian counterpart BCCI since it does not include any bilateral series between the arch-rivals.

PCB sources said that the ICC had asked all Test playing nations to submit draft FTPs after consulting each other and the one proposed by India does not include any bilateral series with either Pakistan or Bangladesh.

Windies’ Gayle breezes in for Aussie T20

London, July 01: West Indies captain Chris Gayle has signed up for Western Australia’s Retravision Warriors for this year’s domestic Twenty20 competition, officials said on Wednesday, hailing a major coup.

North Korea faces new food crisis, UN warns

Beijing, July 01: The United Nations on Wednesday warned that North Korea faces another growing food crisis, with signs of increasing malnutrition among children.

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) can currently distribute food to about 2 million of its targeted 6.2 million North Koreans, said Torben Due, the agency’s country representative in North Korea.

“It’s a very difficult situation for many people in North Korea,” Due told reporters in Beijing.

US, NATO losing in Afghanistan, Ashdown says

Washington, July 01: A top British diplomat says that all foreign troops are losing in Afghanistan because their leaders do not know how to handle the war.

“We’re losing,” Paddy Ashdown, the former British representative for Bosnia, said on Tuesday.

He also added the US- and NATO-led coalition faced defeat unless operational changes were made.

“We’re on our way to losing and our young men are dying out there because politicians won’t get their act together,” according to Ashdown.

Japanese warships heading to Horn of Africa

Tokyo, July 01: Japan plans to send two new warships on an anti-piracy mission off the coast of Somalia to replace two destroyers that have been in the Gulf of Aden since March.

The two destroyers, with a combined crew of 420, will set sail next Monday.

“I ordered to send two patrol ships on July 6 to the Gulf of Aden off Somalia so that they will start their missions at the end of July,” Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada was quoted as saying by AFP.

Israeli navy seizes Gaza aid boat

Gaza, July 01: In another act of piracy outside its territorial waters, the Zionist regime’s navy seized a foreign vessel carrying humanitarian assistance for Gaza and forcibly diverted it and all onboard to Israel on Tuesday.

The “Spirit of Humanity” was carrying 21 human rights workers from 11 countries, including the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Maguire and former US Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney.

The crew was detained by the Israeli military, who said they would “be handed over to the proper authorities.”

Rs 2 lakh robbery in Lucknow

Lucknow, June 30: In a daylight robbery, a man and his cashier were looted of Rs 2 lakh in Indra Nagar area of the Uttar Pradesh capital today.

Masked marauders snatched the money bag from Lokesh Awsathi, an employee at Dayal Industries, and his cashier Om Prakash when they left the State Bank of India’s branch, police said.

The motorcycle-borne robbers fled the scene.

Investigation was on, police added.

New Delhi, June 30: The BJP today declined to comment on the report of Liberhan Commission, probing the demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, saying the party would react only after the contents of the report were made known.

BJP spokesman Ravishankar Prasad in his initial remarks, said the report had been submitted only today and there were other processes like preparation of the Action Taken Report by the Government.
