Ex-Gitmo prisoner trying to save torture photo

Cuba, July 06: Former detainee of Guantanamo Bay prison Binyam Mohamed has appealed to a US federal court not to destroy evidence that shows his torture.

He said that the evidence proved he was abused while being held at the notorious detention center, the Guardian reported on Sunday.

The evidence is said to consist of a photograph of Mohamed, a British resident, was taken after he was severely beaten by guards at the US navy base in Cuba.

Three killed in bomb blast in south-east Turkey

Istanbul, July 06: Three construction workers were killed and nine other men were injured in a landmine explosion in south-east Turkey on Monday, the Andolu news agency reported.

The bomb had been planted along a road in the province of Sirnak, near the border with Iraq. A vehicle carrying workers who were building a dam and roads in the area triggered the mine.

It was not clear who had planted the mine.

Langer defends Championship format

London, July 06: Somerset captain Justin Langer has protested against the ECB’s proposed decision to cut the number of County Championship matches to accommodate the Champions League which will take place in September 2010.

The ECB is facing a serious backlash from professional players over radical plans to reform domestic cricket and Langer has defended the current four-day format, saying it is “perfect”.

India and South Africa In Same Group

London, July 06: The former T20 champion India and South Africa have been placed in the Group ‘C’ along with a qualifier team for the ICC T20 World Cup which will held in 2010 in West Indies.

The defending champion Pakistan has been placed in the Group ‘A’ with Bangladesh and Australia as other teams in the group.

The ICC T20 World Cup 2010 will commence on 30th April and the schedule for all the round matches has been announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Sunday.

New Delhi, July 06: On the eve of the Budget presentation, the BJP on Sunday criticised the Economic Survey as a “huge wishlist” and accused the government of putting the blame for all economic problems in the country on external factors.

Niger militants attack Chevron oil manifold

Niamey, July 06: The main Nigerian militant group says it has forced the closure of a manifold owned by the US oil giant Chevron in the Western Niger Delta.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) on Monday, claimed it wrecked one of the Chevron Nigeria Limited’s (CNL) oil pipeline junction points in the Okan offshore field, Reuters reported.

“The strategic Okan manifold…was blown up at about 2045 hours on Sunday,” MEND was quoted as saying.

Pak begin T20 defence against Bangladesh

St Lucia, July 06: Pakistan will begin the defence of their World Twenty20 title in the Caribbean next year against fellow Asian Test nation Bangladesh in St Lucia on May 1, organisers announced on Sunday.

Pakistan, who beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets in last month’s World Twenty20 final at Lord’s, will complete its group phase programme at the same venue the following day against Australia.

The West Indies will open the event in Guyana on April 30 against one of two qualifiers for the tournament.

Arabian haze polllutes Iranian cities

Tehran, July 06: Strong winds have carried dust from the Arabian desert to Iran, forcing a number of flights to cancel after dangerous levels were reached in the country.

The dust storms add extra concentrations of elements to the air pollution problem of some Iranian cities. The winds are so strong that they have carried the haze to the Iranian capital Tehran.

Silicon dioxide, calcium, potassium, carbon, and other elements are found in the haze, which can have damaging effects on people’s respiratory system.

Indian strategy helps Lee with reverse swing

Melbourne, July 06: Australian pacer Brett Lee has revealed that he managed to get devastating reverse swing against the England Lions after employing an Indian strategy.

Lee bagged six wickets against the Lions to stake a strong claim for a place in the starting eleven of the first Ashes test.

During Australia’s tour of India last October, pacers Ishant Sharma and Zaheer Khan bowled with a scrambled seam so the ball would deteriorate and start to reverse swing quicker and Australia is planning to use the same strategy against England in the first Test.

Khan Mohammad dies aged 81

London, July 06: Former Pakistan fast bowler Khan Mohammad, 81, has died in London. Khan had undergone surgery after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

A fine bowler in his day, Khan played 13 Tests for his country between 1952 and 1958, taking 54 wickets at an average of 23.92. He made his debut in Delhi during Pakistan’s first Test series, the tour of India in 1952-53. Khan was the first man to bowl an over in Tests for Pakistan, and the first wicket-taker, bowling Indian opener Panjay Roy on debut. He formed a potent new-ball pair with Fazal Mahmood.

Iran lashes out at West’s scientific apartheid

Tehran, July 06: Iranian Minister of Science, Research and Technology Mohammad-Mehdi Zahedi has condemned the scientific apartheid imposed by certain Western states.

“Certain European countries have created a kind of scientific apartheid. They do not permit researchers of other states do research in specific courses,” Zahedi told IRNA on the sidelines of the UNESCO’s World Conference on Higher Education 2009 in Paris on Sunday.

“We regard this approach as a kind of discrimination and call for a fight against it,” he added.

Pakistan under foreign pressure over Iran deal

Tehran, July 06: A senior Pakistani official reveals that two major western and Islamic states are exerting pressure on Islamabad to scrap its multi-billion-dollar gas deal with Iran.

The initial agreement of the $7.5 billion Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline, also known as the Peace Pipeline, was signed in Tehran in May between the Iranian and Pakistani presidents.

Iran says that via the pipeline it will deliver eight billion cubic meters of natural gas to Pakistan annually.

Columbia, July 06: High impact sports such as running appear to improve bone mineral density more than such sports as cycling, swimming, or rowing, according to a study conducted by the University of Missouri.

“Only the skeletal sites that experience increased stress from exercise will become stronger,” according to Pam Hinton, associate professor in the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology at the university’s College of Human Environmental Sciences.

Bonn, July 06: Revenge may be sweet, but it could damage your health and make you unhappier than most other people, according to a study by German and Belgian researchers.

The study conducted among 20,000 people by the universities of Bonn and Maastricht also revealed that people who like to pay back perceived injustices also have fewer friends and are less satisfied with life.

The researchers wanted to find out what influence character traits such as positive and negative acts of reciprocation had on “success” and “satisfaction with life.”

Hamburg, July 06: Night shift work is strenuous, but the potential health problems, such as obesity and cardiovascular disease, may be much bigger than previously thought, according to a recent study.

The study conducted by Harvard University in Boston and published in the online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences revealed a higher risk of diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease among night shift workers.

140 dead in bloody riots in China’s Xinjiang

Beijing, July 06: At least 140 people have been killed and more than 800 others injured as ethnic violence erupted in China’s restive Xinjiang region.

A government spokesman confirmed on Monday that at least 140 people were killed, after hundreds of locals took to the streets of the regional capital Urumqi on Sunday — burning and smashing vehicles and confronting police and anti-riot troops — state media Xinhua news agency reported.

Even though the actress lost the match against Aamir, Deepika believes it’s the sportsmanship that won at the end of the day. In her words, “I know that Aamir plays badminton at the Khar gym. He’s extremely fit and a great player. It was an incredible experience to play opposite him.”

Shruti’s skinfest in a bikini for Luck was because as is it is said in B-Town lingo the scene needed it.

Says Shruti, “When Soham narrated the script, I did not even consider the bikini thing as a big deal it was logical to the premise. While shooting for it, the weather was very weird that day. It was freezing cold, but apart from that it was like any other scene in the film for me.”
