South Korea says trade pact with EU completed

Seoul, July 13: South Korea and the European Union have reached agreement on a free trade pact after more than two years of negotiations, the government in Seoul said Monday.

President Lee Myung Bak expressed confidence that the conclusion of the trade talks could be announced after his meeting with the Swedish premier later in the day.

Lee made the remarks in his regular radio address to the country while finishing up a visit to Sweden, which took over the rotating EU presidency July 1.

Two cops dismissed from service on charges of raping woman

Vijayawada, July 13: Krishna District Superintendent of Police D Ramakrishnayya passed orders, dismissing two constables from service on charges of raping a woman in a lodge at Mylavaram in March this year, as the two were earlier suspended by the SP on July three.

Mr Ramakrishnayya told UNI today that apart from dismissing the two constables A Venkat Rao and P Prasad of Mylavaram and Konduru police stations, Mylavaram Special Branch Head Constable M Venkateswara Rao, was also suspended for derlection of his duties.

Bibi rejects top aide’s Iran remarks

Jerusalem, July 13: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected criticism about Israel’s past failure to curb the Iranian nuclear activities, saying Israel never dallied on the issue.

“The prime minister is not willing to discuss directly the way in which Israel governments have dealt with the Iranian threat neither in the past nor at the present,” Netanyahu’s bureau said in a statement, referring to comments made by his senior aide in an interview with Haaretz.

Lieberman: Abbas represents only “half” of Palestinians

Tel Aviv, July 13: Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Monday questioned the legitimacy of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The controversial leader of the ultra-nationalist Israel Beiteinu coalition party told Israel Radio that Abbas represents “at best half the (Palestinian) people.”

Abbas, elected in January 2005 presidential elections, saw his term as president officially end last January.

Nazmul named as back-up for Mortaza

Dhaka, July 13: The Bangladesh Cricket Board has named fast bowler Nazmul Hossain as back-up for injured captain Mashrafe Mortaza. Nazmul will leave Dhaka tonight for Grenada, ahead of the second Test match which begins at the National Cricket Stadium in St George’s from Friday.

Mortaza injured his right knee while bowling on the third day of the first Test against West Indies in St Vincent. He is expected to undergo a scan of the injured knee in Grenada on Tuesday.

Public opinion in Britain over Afghanistan evenly divided

London, July 13: A survey published Monday showed that public opinion in Britain for the Afghanistan campaign is evenly divided, while support has increased since troops were deployed in Helmand province in 2006.

The survey, carried out by ICM for The Guardian newspaper at the end of last week, when eight soldiers died within 24 hours, found that support for Britain’s role stood at 46 per cent.

The figure is up by 15 per cent from 2006, when the same question was last asked.

Mexico nabs 2 over attacks on police

Mexico, July 13: Mexican federal agents have arrested two suspects after a series of bloody attacks that left five officers and two soldiers dead in the state of Michoacan.

Mexico’s federal Public Safety Department said in a statement on Sunday that the men were captured following a shootout with federal police.

One gunman was also killed in the incident, which took place in the Pacific port city of Lazaro Cardenas.

Three assault rifles, a pistol, bullets, a bulletproof vest, four radios and an SUV were also seized.

Mass rally in Turkey to support China’s Uighur

Ankara, July 13: The violence in Urumqi has sparked almost daily protests in Turkey, mostly outside heavily guarded Chinese diplomatic missions in Istanbul and Ankara.
Thousands of demonstrators in Turkey poured into the streets to show solidarity with the Uighur minority in northwestern China.

Around 10,000 people gathered in Caglayan square in Istanbul on Sunday to denounce what they see as Chinese mistreatment of the Muslim Uighur minority in the Xinjiang region following the deadly violence in Urumqi.

Turkey eyes Iran, Russia in Nabucco

Ankara, July 13: Turkey’s energy minister says his country doesn’t rule out the possibility of joining Iran and Russia in the Nabucco gas pipeline in the future.

Taner Yildiz told private NTV television that Tehran and Moscow may be involved in the EU- and US-backed project planned to pump gas from the Caspian Sea to Europe via Turkey.

“We should not be surprised if we see Russia as a supplier one day,” Yildiz said. “We can also easily see Iran in this project as a supplier in the future.”

Blast kills nine in eastern Pakistan

Islamabad, July 13: A huge blast ripped through Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province Monday, killing at least nine people, police said.

The explosion took place in a small village on the outskirt of the Mian Channu town, located around 250 kilometers from the provincial capital, Lahore.

“According to information we have received from the hospital, nine people have been killed and many more injured,” senior police officer Kamran Khan said. “However, the exact casualty count is yet to be confirmed.”

CIA stops secret plan to nab Qaeda leaders

Washington, July 13: CIA Director Leon Panetta has stopped the agency’s secret plan for capturing or killing al-Qaeda operatives, US intelligence officials have said.

The precise nature of the highly classified effort remained unclear, unnamed former intelligence officials familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal.

The Central Intelligence Agency would not comment on the case, the paper said on Sunday.

The report said that the agency spent money on planning and possibly some training of its operatives for the mission.
