“Global warming is becoming a very serious issue.

It is crippling the world and as individuals it is our responsibility that we make a conscious effort to deal with it in our own little way and make the world a better place to live,” Katrina said in a statement.

New Delhi, July 16: Katrina Kaif has many reasons to smile. First her recent release “New York” became a huge success and now comes her birthday, which the British-born actress will celebrate with her entire family in London Thursday.

“I’m celebrating my birthday this year with my entire family, all my sisters who have flown down from all over, my mom who’s flown down from Chennai and my brother who’s a professional rock climber,” Katrina, who will turn 25, told media through SMS.

Pakistan on Tuesday crashed to a second successive Test defeat on their tour of Sri Lanka, after the hosts won the second Test of the three-match series to take an unassaialabe 2-0 lead.

With this defeat, Pakistan has also lost a Test series in Sri Lanka for the first time in history.

After shocks shake New Zealand powerful earth quake

Wellington, July 16: New Zealand’s southern region shook Thursday with hundreds of aftershocks after the country was hit by its most powerful earthquake in 78 years, which measured 7.8 on the Richter scale

Seismologists who monitor the 14,000 quakes recorded in New Zealand every year said most of the aftershocks were too small to be felt but five exceeded magnitude 5. Usually, only about 20 tremors of this strength are logged annually.

Australia To Take On England Today

London, July 16: Australia will be looking to take lead in the series as they will take on England in the second test match of the Ashes series at the Lords today, after ending first test match with a draw.

The first test had finished with a draw as Australia failed to take just one wicket after M Panesar and J Anderson played through almost 12 overs on the last day of the match.

Australian batsmen performed brilliantly in the first test with four of them scoring tons including R Ponting, B Haddin, M North and S Katich, while M Johnson and N Hauritz were also impressive with the ball.

Militant leader killed in Pakistan clashes

Islamabad, July 16: Pakistan’s army claims to have killed a most wanted militant commander in the clashes that erupted in the tribal area northwest of the country.

Security forces managed on Wednesday to kill the leader of militant Peochar Abu Laith group during the ongoing search operation against the remaining militants in Swat and Malakand divisions.

Another militant commander, identified as Ismail, surrendered himself to security forces in the village of Goal Sakhra, while locals in Sandoka village, near Thana, captured three insurgents and handed them over to authorities.

IJF sympathizes with Iran over plane crash

Tehran, July 16: The President of the International Judo Federation (IJF) voices sympathy with Iran over a deadly plane crash that killed members of Iran’s Junior Judo squad.

Marius Vizer extended his condolences over the tragic event in a letter to Iran’s Judo Federation, ILNA news agency reported on Wednesday.

Ten members of Iran’s Junior Judo squad — eight athletes and two coaches — were among the passengers of an Iranian plane which crashed in northwest Iran, killing all the 168 people on board.

Israel’s key spy charged by Lebanese prosecutor

Jerusalem, July 16: A Lebanese prosecutor has formally charged a car dealer with espionage activities for Israel and passing information about Hezbollah.

Military Prosecutor Rashid Mizher said the car dealer from Nabatiyeh was also accused of providing Israel with intelligence on the Lebanese Army’s positions.

Mizher initially recommended the death penalty for the suspect but later reduced it to a life sentence.

The indictment was the first step before the trial begins with no date set for the actual trial.

US military resumes Guantanamo tribunals

Cuba, July 16: The US military has resumed the controversial Guantanamo tribunals for the first time in months with a series of pretrial hearings.

The US President Barack Obama suspended the proceedings shortly after taking office in January but announced in May that some of the cases would continue, drawing criticism from human rights activists.

On Wednesday, prosecutors sought delays pending a review in the cases of three defendants, said Joe DellaVedova, a Spokesman for the Military Commissions at the US naval installation in Cuba.

More killed in Mexico’s drug wars

Mexico, July 16: Mexico’s drug wars have claimed 17 more lives as cartels hit back at a government squeeze on their operations in the country’s north.

Judicial sources said that two police officers had been shot dead driving in an official car through Chihuahua, the capital of the eponymous northern border state that has seen much of the bloodshed.

The attack was carried out using a 0.50 caliber weapon — often used “by drug traffickers to kill police,” said the official, who asked not to be named.

Chihuahua state shares long borders with the US states of Texas and New Mexico.

Crashed plane’s black boxes recovered

Tehran, July 16: Two black boxes of a passenger plane, which crashed near the Iranian city of Qazvin, have been found and search is underway to find the third one, an official has said.

Ahmad Majidi, Head of the Crisis Working Group of Iran’s Road and Transportation Ministry, told IRNA that experts from Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization (CAO) have recovered the two boxes.

Majidi noted that the black boxes of the Tupolev plane were heavily damaged but experts are trying to retrieve data from them.

Iran’s junior judo squad killed in plane crash

Tehran, July 15: Ten members of Iran’s Junior Judo squad were among the passengers of an Iranian jet which crashed in northwest Iran with nearly 168 people on board.

Eight Iranian judo athletes and two coaches were traveling to the Armenian capital, Yerevan, on Wednesday to hold a training camp.

The Iranian passenger plane crashed near the city of Qazvin.

The Russian-made Tupolev went down near the village of Jannat-Abad at 11:33 am local time.

‘US tacitly telling Iraq Kurds to forget Kirkuk’

Kirkuk, July 15: Analysts interpret the unexpected trip by the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff to Iraq’s northern city of a Kirkuk as a warning to ethnic Kurds.

Adm. Mike Mullen traveled on Monday to the oil-rich city of Kirkuk which Kurds have claimed as the capital of their autonomous region in the north.

They have drawn up a draft constitution claiming extra areas as part of the region’s territory, including the ethnically divided Kirkuk province and parts of Nineveh and Diyala provinces in official Kurdish territory.

Strauss wants inspiration from Cardiff jailbreak

London, July 15: Andrew Strauss wants to harness the spirit from the final afternoon in Cardiff to drive England to a 1-0 Ashes lead in Thursday’s second Test at Lord’s. The England captain was impressed by his side’s fight as his men held on for a draw on Sunday after scratching out a 13-run lead through its final pairing of James Anderson and Monty Panesar.

Flintoff to retire from Test cricket

London, July 15: Andrew Flintoff has called a press conference at 12.30pm today, in which he will announce his retirement from Test cricket at the end of this Ashes summer, although he still intends to make himself available for Twenty20 and ODI cricket.

Flintoff, who has missed 25 of England’s last 48 Tests through a variety of injuries, suffered another fitness scare on the eve of the Lord’s Test, when he reported soreness and swelling in the same right knee that required surgery back in April, after he tore his meniscus while playing in the IPL.

Fleming to end ties with Wellington cricket

Wellington, July 15: Stephen Fleming is set to end his association with Wellington cricket which will allow him to concentrate on his sports management business. Fleming stepped down as a board member of Cricket Wellington and is expected to withdraw from the Wellington Twenty20 side.

The former New Zealand captain retired from international and first-class cricket in 2008, but returned to captain a struggling Wellington team in the Twenty20 format.
