Venezuelan forces in new anti-gov’t crackdown

Caracas, July 16: At least eight people have been injured in clashes between Venezuelan National Guard troops and opposition forces over the command of a police unit.

Government forces confronted the opposition in Curiepe, Miranda, east of the capital Caracas, on Wednesday in a swift crackdown on anti-government protesters who sought to maintain authority over a police station.

Violence erupted after dozens of National Guard riot police evacuated the town’s police station controlled by the opposition, the Associated Press quoted Miranda state security forces as saying.

Sanitation worker attacked as Jerusalem riots resume

Jerusalem, July 16: Rioting ultra-Orthodox Jews in Jerusalem injured three people, including a municipal worker, Thursday morning, as they kept up protests against the arrest of a mother suspected of deliberately starving her three-year-old son.

The municipal worker, hit by stones in the face, head and shoulder, told police he was attacked when the rioters noticed his uniform.

Lords, July 16: England captain Andrew Strauss won the toss and elected to bat against Australia in the second Ashes Test at Lord’s here on Thursday.

England fast bowling all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, who announced on Wednesday his intention to retire from Test cricket at the end of this series, was passed fit following a knee injury.

Star England batsman Kevin Pietersen also retained his place despite a longstanding Achilles injury.

Attacks on US, Korea sites stem from Britain, says security expert

Hanoi, July 16: An official of leading Vietnamese cyber security company Bkis on Thursday said it had found that attacks launched on websites in South Korea and the US earlier this month appear to have stemmed from a master server in Britain.

Nguyen Tu Quang, director of Bkis, said that after receiving records from South Korean authorities his centre analyzed them and concluded that the master server which distributed the attacks was located in Britain.

“We have sent analyzed data back to the South Korean and US governments to help them deal with the case,” Quang said.

Flintoff circus will distract England: Ponting

London, July 16: Australia captain Ricky Ponting feels the retirement of talismanic all-rounder Andrew Flintoff after the Ashes will serve as a distraction for the England players during the rest of the series, and will work in favour of the visitors.

”For us, knowing the stature he has in the game in England then I can see it turning into that.

”If they know this is his last chance to play here, his last chance to play Edgbaston, and last chance to play Headingley, I am sure there will be a bit of a circus around,” Ponting said.

Elham: Expediency Council ruling ‘unconstitutional’

Tehran, July 16: An Iranian minister who also holds a post in the Guardian Council has criticized a recent move that bans him from serving in both positions at the same time.

Commenting on the decision recently announced by the country’s Expediency Council, Minister of Justice Gholam-Hossein Elham claimed that it was ‘issuing directives in contradiction to the Constitution’.

Blast in Total plant kills 2, injures 6

Paris, July 16: Two people have been killed and six more injured in an explosion in a Total plant in eastern France, while several others remain buried under the rubble.

The blast took place on Wednesday when a steam-cracking furnace blew up at a petrochemicals plant in Carling near the German border, AFP reported.

The explosion damaged equipment but did not cause a fire, Total’s local officials said, adding that several people were believed to be still buried in the debris.

Police kill gunman near US Capital

Washington, July 16: The US police have killed a suspected gunman near the US Capital building in Washington DC after he pulled a gun during a routine traffic stop.

Police say that officers shot dead a 35-year-old man who was stopped for a traffic violation but ‘fled and drove at a high rate of speed around the [Capitol Hill] complex’.

“He almost hit officers, he crashed into a car, and he came out of his car shooting what appears to be an automatic [weapon].”

US held Iranians in Iraq as ‘hostages’

Tehran, July 16: Senior US officials in Iraq have said that three Iranian diplomats, recently released by the US, had been taken ‘hostages’.

A former and a currently serving senior US official has claimed that the three diplomats were in effect ‘hostages’ taken by Washington in a bid to persuade Iran to ‘reduce its support for anti-US violence in Iraq’, the Washington Times said in an exclusive report on Tuesday.

Sehwag recovering from injury at NCA

New Delhi, July 16: Indian aggreesive opener Virender Sehwag has visited National Cricket Academy for his regular check up of shoulder injury with the physio Paul Close on Wednesday.

This was second time Sehwag has came to the academy as earlier he visited on June 29 for shoulder injury review, which he received during Indian Premier League (IPL-2) while playing for Delhi Daredevils.

Due to this injury Sehwag was ruled out of the ICC T20 World Cup in England and the ODI series against West Indies last month.

Mousavi to take part in Friday prayers

Tehran, July 16: Defeated presidential candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi will take part in this week’s Friday prayers led by former president Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani.

In a statement issued by his website Ghalamnews on Wednesday, the country’s last prime minister, who placed second in Iran’s June 12 presidential election, announced that he would join the lines of worshippers for this week’s Friday prayers.

Mousavi said he would attend the prayers as he feels ‘obliged’ to respond to calls concerning the path of defending the ‘legitimate rights to a free and decent living.’

PCB denies rift within Pakistan team

Lahore, July 16: Pakistan’s historic Test series defeat against Sri Lanka may have raised questions over the team’s unity, but the PCB said captain Younis Khan shares good relations with his teammates and there is no divisions in the national side.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has dismissed the suggestions made by former cricketers like Sarfraz Nawaz, Abdul Qadir and Inzamam-ul-Haq, who have raised concerns over the national team, saying that it seems to be divided.

Ijaz Butt, national board chairman, has also ruled out the idea of sacking Younis Khan as captain.

Strauss backs outgoing Flintoff

London, July 16: With Andrew Flintoff quitting the longest version of the game after the Ashes series, England captain Andrew Strauss believes the talismanic all-rounder will be motivated to give off his best during the remaining four Tests of the current series.

”I still think we’re going to see a lot more cricket from Fred and I also think that if anything he’s going to be more motivated for these last four Test matches – I think he really wants to go out with a bang,” Strauss said.
