Abbas: Israel never complies with obligations

Gaza, July 18: Acting Palestinian Authority Chief says Israel has failed to fulfill its obligations for international agreements but Palestinians are loyal to the Middle East peace plan.

Gov’t ‘not supporting’ Tehran subway plans

Tehran, July 18: The completion of Tehran’s subway system is four years behind plans due to the government’s lack of financial support, says the head of Tehran’s Railway Company.

The Iranian Parliament passed a bill last year which allowed Tehran’s City Council to use part of the country’s foreign exchange reserves to complete and modernize the city’s subway system with which an estimated1.5 million people commute daily.

Mohsen Hashemi, however, said on Saturday that the City Council has not received any sums from the government, Mehr news agency reported.

Ahmadinejad fills new cabinet posts

Tehran, July 18: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is gradually filling the positions for his second term’s Cabinet with his close allies.

Ahmadinejad appointed one of his youngest confidants, Mehrdad Bazrpash, as a deputy president and the head of Iran’s National Youth Organization to replace the cleric Mohammad Javad Haj-Aliakbari.

Bazrpash, 30, will need to combine his new responsibilities running Iran’s second-biggest automaker, SAIPA, the directorship of which was given to him 2 years ago by the president.

Vass, who had played his last test in February, will replace the off-spinner Suraj Randiv in 16-memeber Sri Lankan squad.

Case against 13 cops in fake encounter case

Faizabad, July 18: A case has been registered against 13 policemen, including Additional Superintendent of Police and Deputy Superintendent of Police of the Special Task Force, into an alleged fake encounter case here.

The CB-CID lodged the FIR with the Kotwali Sadar police on the complaint of Amresh Pratap Singh last night, SSP R K S Rathore said today.

The complainant has alleged that his son Suraj Singh was shot dead by the policemen in a fake encounter two years ago. He said the STF killed the youth in Lucknow after showing him as a notorious criminal.

North Korean refugees have tough start in the South

Ansong, July 18: Almost all North Korean refugees start their new lives in South Korea by learning to use computers, ATMs and washing machines.

“Normal citizens [in North Korea] are not permitted to possess computers or even fax machines,” explained 62-year-old Kim, a former Pyongyang resident who fled to the South.

After arriving from the North in February, Kim, who is not allowed to disclose his full name for security reasons, has now begun to use a computer for the first time in his life.

World’s first manned fuel cell aircraft lifts off

Berlin, July 18: In another step towards realizing the dream of electric flight, the world’s first manned aircraft with the ability to take-off using power from fuel cells takes to the German skies.

The Antares DLR-H2 aircraft, which generates zero emissions onboard, is the result of a joint venture between Germany’s Lange Aviation, BASF and German Aerospace Center (DLR), and Denmark’s Serenergy.

The single-person all-composite aircraft has a one electric motor, turning a two-blade propeller above its spine.

Akhtar takes part in fitness test in Lahore

Karachi, July 18: Pakistan’s controversial fast bowler, Shoaib Akhtar took part in a fitness test in Lahore today but “didn’t bowl in the nets” still making his selection for the upcoming one-day series in Sri Lanka doubtful.

The interim chief selector, Wasim Bari said that Shoaib had undergone physical training exercise before him at the national cricket academy but didn’t bowl in the nets.

“I am leaving for Colombo tomorrow to consult with the team captain and coach over the selection of the one-day squad for the series in Sri Lanka,” Bari said.

US air force jet crashes in eastern Afghanistan

Kabul, July 18: A US air force jet conducting coalition operations in eastern Afghanistan crashed Saturday morning, the military said in a statement.

The F-15E crashed at approximately 3:15 am with two members on board, it said. Their condition was not known.

The military did not disclose the cause of the crash but said it was not due to hostile fire.
