China Xinjiang blast kills 31 people, around 90 injured: Report

Clash Between YSRCP and TDP

While polling in Telangana last week was peaceful, the apprehensions of violence in Seemandhra came true Wednesday as clashes between activists of the YSR Congress and the TDP marred the balloting.

Strong Earthquake Shakes Myanmar, Northern Thailand

(BANGKOK) — Officials said Tuesday that one person was killed and several dozen were hurt in an earthquake that struck northern Thailand and Myanmar a day earlier, smashing windows, cracking walls and roads and damaging Buddhist temples.

The airport in Chiang Rai, a northern Thai city near the epicenter of the shallow magnitude 6.3 temblor, evacuated people from its terminal, where display signs and pieces of the ceiling fell. There was no damage to the runway or flight disruptions, airport General Manager Damrong Klongakara said.

Field Uma Bharati against Sonia: Ram Dev

NEW DELHI: Days after sharing stage with BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, yoga guru Baba Ramdev on Wednesday urged the party to field Uma Bharati from the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency against Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

“Though the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded candidates in all constituencies, why has it not fielded a strong candidate from Rae Bareli,” Ramdev asked at a press conference here.

He said if the BJP agreed to field Bharti from Rae Bareli, he and his followers would campaign for her.

Mumbai Two years after Saif Ali Khan allegedly assaulted a South-Africa-based businessman and his father-in-law at a Mumbai hotel, a local court yesterday framed charges against the actor and his two friends, Shakeel Ladak and Bilal Amrohi, under Section 325 (assault) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code, public prosecutor Wajeed Sheikh said.

SC notice to Centre, EC on PIL against candidates contesting two seats

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday sought response from Centre and Election Commission on a PIL seeking to declare as “null and void” the nomination papers of any candidate contesting election from more than one constituency.

A bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam and Justice N V Ramana issued notices to Centre and EC on the petition which also sought direction to candidates not to file nomination papers and contest election from more than one constituency for the same legislative body.

Union Law Minister defends Communal Violence Bill..

Under attack from Opposition over the Communal Violence Bill, Law Minister Kapil Sibal on Saturday defended it saying the proposed law was not violative of the country’s federal structure and was required as several state governments have been accused of shielding those guilty of targetted violence.

He said the Prevention of Communal Violence (Access to Justice and Reparations) Bill, 2014 does not either directly or indirectly seek to legislate on public order, police and public services of the state. Therefore, it is not in violation of the federal structure.

Anna Hazare backs Mamata for PM, says Arvind Kejriwal path different.

Social activist Anna Hazare said on Saturday that he would not be averse to supporting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the post of Prime Minister if she was ready to state in an affidavit her commitment to his 17-point economic agenda.

He claimed that if he backed Mamata, she would get 40 seats in the Lok Sabha, and would be in a position to decide who becomes the Prime Minister.

BJP used Ram temple issue for electoral gains: Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Arguing that BJP did not accept his offer for “land” at a place “other than the disputed site” for building the Ram temple, SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav accused the saffron party of using the temple issue for electoral gains.

Mulayam alleged that BJP never had the intention to build the temple, despite “collecting donations” for it from across the world.

Kejriwal threatens to “go to any extent” over Jan Lokpal bill

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday threatened to “go to any extent” over his pet anti-graft legislation, the Jan Lokpal Bill, which is opposed both by the Congress, whose continued support is essential for the survival of his government, as well as the BJP.

“Corruption is extremely important issue and I will go to any extent,” he said during an interaction with PTI editors at the agency’s head office here.

Sanjay Dutt prays at temple, dargah for his wife

Mumbai: Munna Bhai (Sanjay Dutt), whose wife Maanyata is currently undergoing medical treatment at a hospital, visited a temple to pray for her recovery.

Earlier this month, Maanyata was admitted to a private hospital in suburban Mumbai after being diagnosed with a tumour in liver and a suspected heart ailment.

Sanjay Dutt, who is under emotional distress because of his wife’s ill-health, recently visited Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Mandir in Dadar and the holy Sayyed Haji Abdul Rehman Shah Baba Dargah in Dongri to pray for her recovery.

Shah Rukh Khan is ‘absolutely fine’ after suffering a minor injury on the sets of ‘Happy New Year’ in Mumbai

Mumbai: Bollywood super star Shahrukh Khan was injured while shooting for an upcoming film in Juhu and was rushed to the Nanavati hospital here.

King Khan, 48, suffered the minor injury while shooting for’Happy New Year’ at a five-star hotel here, sources said.

According to reports, a hotel door crashed on him following which he started bleeding and was rushed to the hospital.

Shooting was temporarily stopped. A statement issued by the actor’s team said the actor had suffered a minor injury.

Mursi to face trial over jail break case on January 28

Cairo, January 02: Egypt’s former Islamist president, Mohamed Mursi, will face trial on January 28 over a mass jail break in 2011, one of three cases against him since he was ousted by the army in July, judicial sources said.

Since Mursi was deposed, security forces have launched a wide crackdown against his Muslim Brotherhood group, arresting thousands over accusations of inciting violence and designating the group a terrorist organization last month.

Uttarakhand govt to build shelter

Dehradun, Janaury 02: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna has issued orders to build shelters homes for people living in the open in severe cold across the state.

The Chief Minister, who late last night took a spin around the city to see the conditions of the homeless, issued directives in this regard.

Moved by the plight of people shivering in the cold in open spaces, Bahuguna distributed blankets to them and asked District Magistrate BVRC Purushottam to construct shelter homes for them and pitch makeshift tents at suitable places in the city for their temporary residence.

Dubai 2014 firework display breaks world record: Guinness

The main displays took place at Burj Khalifa and the luxurious Atlantis hotel located in Palm Jumeirah, one of three palm-shaped islands Dubai shattered the world record for the largest ever pyrotechnic display on New Year’s Eve with a show involving more than half a million fireworks, Guinness World Records said on Wednesday.

Ten months in planning, over 500,000 fireworks were used during the display which lasted around six minutes, with Guinness World Records adjudicators on hand to confirm that a new record had been set,’ the Guinness website said.

Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray passes away

Mumbai: Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray died on Saturday afternoon at his residence here, his doctor announced. He was 86.Thackeray died of cardio-respiratory arrest on Saturday at his home, one of his doctors, Jalil Parker, said. He had been ill for some time and was rumoured to have died earlier this week.

Thousands of supporters massed outside his residence as his death was announced at 4.55 p.m. to a shocked Maharashtra, whose political stage he dominated for over four decades with his hard, rightwing political views that often rocked the entire nation.
