US expects Egypt to honour peace with Israel

Washington, February 5:The US expects the Egyptian government to honour previous peace agreements with Israel regardless of who is in power, the White House said Friday.

“Our expectation would be that whatever the next government of Egypt is, that they would adhere to a treaty signed by the government of Egypt,” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

Gibbs was referring to the 1978 Camp David Accords, which were brokered by the US and formed the basis of a 1979 peace agreement between Egypt and Israel.

SSC to recruit 53,200 para-military constables

Mumbai, February 4:The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) will recruit 53,200 constables for central para-military forces through a common recruitment examination, SSC Chairman N K Raghupathy said here today.

This is the first time that government has decided to conduct a common recruitment examination for recruitment of Constable (General Duty) in all central para-military organizations through Staff Selection Commission. Earlier, the respective CPOs used to make recruitment of constables (GD) on their own.

Pakistan cabinet set to be dissolved

Islamabad, February 4:The central executive committee (CEC) of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party Friday decided to dissolve the federal cabinet and empower Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to do the job, a media report said.

In the CEC meeting chaired by President Asif Ali Zardari, co-chairman of the PPP, the cabinet members handed over their resignations to the party high command, Geo TV reported.

The party authorised Gilani to dissolve the cabinet whenever needed, it said.

Managing inflationary risk biggest challenge: Rangarajan

Coimbatore, February 4:Admitting that inflation triggered by foodgrain price rise did not moderate as expected by the government, C Rangarajan, Chairman, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, today said managing inflationary risk was the biggest challenge in the short run.

Inflation was triggered by the increase in foodgrain prices and the government expected that it would moderate in 2011 but this did not happen, he said here.

Haryana sets up police stations to check power, water theft

Chandigarh, February 4:In a unique move, the Haryana government Friday announced the setting up of police stations to check the theft of power and canal water in the state.

Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda approved the proposal of setting up of eight special police stations to check the theft of power and canal water in the state, Irrigation Minister Ajay Singh Yadav said here.

Yadav said the chief minister had sanctioned posts of 356 police personnel, including officers, to meet the need of staff of special police stations. The force will be headed by a superintendent of police.

Nursing students boycott classes

Nahan, February 4:Nearly 150 students of Himalayan Nursing Institute at Kala Amb near here today boycotted classes and came on roads shouting slogans against the college management.

Students were protesting against recent increase in the annual charges announced by the management.

Holding placards and raising anti-management slogans, students assembled at the main gate of the institute and raised slogans against the principal, who they alleged, has misbehaved with some students.

Ten killed in Bangladesh accident

Dhaka, February 4:At least ten political activists were killed when their minibus collided head-on with an oil-laden lorry in Bangladesh’s central Faridpur district Friday, police said.

Seven of the victims died instantly in the collision. They were on board the bus carrying supporters of a newly elected ruling party lawmaker when it hit the lorry, some 60 km west of capital Dhaka.

Jharkhand Public Service Commission ex-Chairman surrenders before special court

Ranchi, February 4:Former chairman of Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) Dilip Kumar Prasad, who was absconding for over six months and had his property attached today surrendered before a special vigilance court here.

The special court of Binay Kant Khan sent him to judicial custody for fourteen days.

Prasad went into hiding after an FIR was filed against him and 31 others in connection with alleged irregularities in conducting the 2008 state civil service examination.

The state vigilance bureau had on June 13, 2010 filed an FIR against the accused.

Dalits protest against Minister

Alwar, February 4:Dalits today staged a demonstration against Rajasthan Medical and Health Minister Duru Miyan here, accusing him of shielding those who had ransacked their houses last month.

Dalits staged the protest at the Circuit House where the Minister, who was in the district for a public hearing, was present.

The Minister left the place as the protest was on.

Dalit leader Suraj Mal alleged the Minister was shielding those who hand ransacked their houses.

The protesters, all residents of Husainpur village, demanded immediate arrest of those who damaged their houses.

Sena alleges Rs 15,000 crore sales tax scam

Mumbai, February 4:Sales tax irregularities to the tune of Rs 15,000 crore have taken place through the misuse of a bogus notification of the Maharashtra government, Shiv Sena alleged today.

“The state has lost Rs 15,000 crore tax since it charged only two per cent tax instead of 12.5 per cent on vehicles sold outside the state between 2005 and 2010,” senior Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai said.

The Sena leader distributed two notifications issued by the Finance department with the same (date October 17, 2005) and same number — 8(5) of CST Act 1956.

Visitor faces jail for posting woman’s nude photos online

Dubai, February 4: A visitor faces a year in jail after he published on Facebook some nude photos of a Filipina girl, who claimed he raped her, a court ruled yesterday.

The Dubai Court of First Instance charged the 22-year-old Pakistani visitor of breaching the woman’s privacy by publishing her nude photos on Facebook and having sex with her.

Prosecutors accused 22-year-old S.T. of luring the Filipina, J.M., to his office where she claimed he raped her twice and used his phone camera to take nude photos of her in the shower and post them on Facebook.

Census exercise in Gujarat to begin Feb 9

Ahmedabad, February 4:The 15th census exercise beginning in Gujarat from Feb 9 will have the star cast of SAB TV’s popular serial “Tarak Mehta Ka Ulta Chashma” as its brand ambassadors.

State files details of CID probe in Netai carnage

Kolkata, February 4:The West Bengal state administration Friday filed three affidavits before the Calcutta High Court stating the progress in the probe into the Jan 7 Netai village carnage and on the presence of armed camps in and around Lalgarh area.

Home Secretary G.D. Gautama and Additional Director General of Police of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Raj Kanojia were present in the court to submit the reports in the public interest litigation.

Satyawati College student hangs self in classroom

New Delhi, February 4:A second-year Bachelor of Arts student of Satyawati College in north Delhi was found hanging from a ceiling fan in one of the classrooms here Friday afternoon, police said.

The incident came to light at around 3.15 p.m. when a college employee found Amir Mallik, 21, hanging in a classroom in the college in Ashok Vihar.

“No suicide note was found from the deceased’s possession,” a senior police officer said.

Amir stayed in Sriram Colony in Kachchi Khazuri area with his parents, four brothers and three sisters.

Probe sought into disrupted assembly telecast

Panaji, February 4:Goa Speaker Pratapsing Rane Friday asked Chief Minister Digambar Kamat to initiate a police probe into the blackout of live assembly transmissions by a section of cable TV operators.

Speaking during zero hour, Rane said the live telecast was intended to inform the people of what their legislators were doing in the house.

“The cables of the media are being cut by some miscreants. This is a programme which the whole population should be seeing. Why are miscreants cutting cables? Send the police and check it,” Rane said.

Upul Tharanga struck his ninth one-day century

Colombo, February 4:Opener Upul Tharanga struck his ninth one-day century to propel Sri Lanka to a crushing eight-wicket win over the West Indies on Thursday.

West Indies was bowled out for 203 in 50 overs after being asked to bat first by Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara at the Sinhalese Sports Club.

After a brief rain interruption, Sri Lanka was given a revised target of 197 in 47 overs under the Duckworth/Lewis method and reached it with 27 balls to spare.

NABARD sanctions loan of Rs 222 crore to Andhra Pradesh

Hyderabad, February 4:NABARD, the apex bank for agriculture and rural development, today announced that it has sanctioned a loan of Rs 222.71 crore to Andhra Pradesh for the implementation of 22 micro irrigation projects.

These projects will be implemented by the Department of Horticulture.

Out of the total outlay of 521.59 crore, the balance will be met by the state government.

The micro irrigation projects will benefit an area of 119,600 hectares through adoption of drip and sprinkler irrigation systems.

Gabor’s husband hospitalised

London, February 4:Veteran actress Zsa Zsa Gabor’s husband, Prince Frederic von Anhalt, has been admitted to a medical centre, after he collapsed in an elevator.

Anhalt, the seventh husband of the 93-year-old screen legend, was admitted Tuesday to the UCLA medical centre – the same facility as the actress – after he passed out in an elevator.

Microsoft taps $ high-grade mkt with $2.25bn deal

NEW YORK, February 4: Microsoft Corp on Thursday launched a $2.25 billion sale of bonds in the software giant’s third trip to the US dollar investment-grade market.

The company is offering $750 million of five-year notes at a yield spread of 38 basis points over comparable Treasuries.

The second tranche comprises $500 million of 10-year notes, launched at 48 basis points over Treasuries and the third tranche is $1 billion of 30-year bonds at 68 basis points over Treasuries.

US using protests to divide Egyptians

Cairo, February 4:A top Iranian military official has warned Egyptians that the United States is seeking to use the anti-government protests to sow discord in the North African country.

“By introducing several people as [protest] leaders, the US is seeking to pave the way for creating rifts amidst the Egyptian nation and to use the outcome to its own advantage,” top military adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Brigadier General Yahya Rahim-Safavi, said on Thursday, IRNA reported.
