Nasdaq computer network was penetrated by hackers

New York, February 06:A newspaper is reporting that the computer network that runs the Nasdaq Stock Market in New York has been penetrated by hackers multiple times during the past year.

The Wall Street Journal reported on its website late Friday that federal investigators are trying to identify the perpetrators and their motive.

According to the report, people familiar with the investigation say the exchange’s trading platform, the system which executes trades, was not compromised.

Court bans sex for man with low intelligence

London, February 06: A 41-year-old man with low intelligence has been banned from having sex by a British court.

Justice Mostyn of the Court of Protection, however, admitted that the case raised questions about “civil liberties and personal autonomy”, the Guardian reported.

The man, known as Alan, had been in a relationship with another man and told officials “it would make me feel happy” for it to continue.

But according to local council, the man’s “vigorous sex drive” was inappropriate.

Drunken son killed his 80-year-old mother

Delhi, February 06:Enraged over his mother not agreeing to sell their house, a drunken man strangled his 80-year-old mother and then slammed her head on the floor in Mongolpuri in northwest Delhi, police said on Friday. The man has been arrested.

The accused Somnath, 40, allegedly strangled Amar Devi and hit her head on the floor on Thursday.

The deceased had transferred the ownership of property in the name of her grandson Gautam.

45-year-old woman locked in house for 20 years

Brazil, February 06:Police in Brazil said they had freed a 45-year-old woman who had been locked in a house for 20 years with no communication with the outside world.

Police in the state of Parana yesterday said that the woman was locked in the home by her partner, a 60-year-old man, in the city of Mariluz, 550 kilometers (340 miles) from the state capital Curitiba.

Following a complaint by social workers, police arrived at the house to find it closed but heard the voice of a woman who appeared to be calling for help, a police statement said.

International powers seek to dominate nations

In a meeting with Polish Ambassador to Tehran Juliusz J. Gojlo on Saturday, Ali Larijani described the presence of foreign powers in any country as problematic for that nation’s independence.

“International powers try to strengthen and reinforce their hegemony and influence in [other] countries through creating false fears in different parts of the world,” Fars News Agency quoted Larijani as saying.

Pakistan slams Hindu terror on eve of talks

Islamabad, February 06: On the eve of Foreign Secretary-level talks in Thimphu, Pakistan yesterday came out with a provocative statement saying that India’s handling of the Samjhauta Express train bombing case showed that it lacked ”courage to unearth culpability of Hindu extremists”.

“India seems to be lacking courage to unearth culpability of Hindu extremists and their links with some Indian Army personnel,” Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit said in a statement that may not go down well with New Delhi.

Two more cases of Congo fever detected in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, February 06:Two relatives of an intern doctor who had died of Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) have tested positive for the tick borne virus, health officials said here.

“A girl and a male relative of an intern doctor Shabbir Ali Umatiya (25) who died of CCHF (congo fever) on January 31 have tested positive for the tick borne virus,” Additional Director Health Paresh Dave said.

The blood samples of the duo were sent for testing to National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, and reports received today have shown them positive for the virus, he said.

President Patil arrives in Nagpur

Nagpur, February 05:President Pratibha Patil arrived here this evening on a three-day visit to the city.

Nagpur district Guardian Minister Shivajirao Moghe received the President at Ambedkar International Airport here.

The President will inaugurate the platinum jubilee celebrations of the High Court Bar Association tomorrow morning.

She will also open the centenary celebrations of the daily `The Hitvada’.

President Mubarak resigns as head of Egypt’s ruling party

Cairo/Washington, February 06:Embattled Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak Saturday night quit as the ruling party chief, but the tens of thousands gathered at Cairo’s Tahrir Square stayed put demanding his immediate ouster.

Under intense pressure from the US to make way for a new regime and free and fair elections, the president of three decades put in his papers as chairman of the National Democratic Party (NDP).

Al Jazeera quoted state television as saying that other top leaders of the ruling party have also quit on the 12th straight day of mass anti-Mubarak protests engulfing Egypt.

PM arrives in Hyderabad on two-day visit

Hyderabad, February 05:Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived at the Begumpet airport here this evening on a two-day visit.

The special Indian Air Force aircraft carrying Singh landed at the airport at 7.48 pm.

The Prime Minister was received by Andhra Pradesh Governor ESL Narasimhan, Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Jaipal Reddy.

State Congress Committee chief D Srinivas and other state ministers too were present to receive Singh.

Passengers robbed in moving train in Delhi

New Delhi, February 05:Eight men robbed passengers of Allahabad-bound Unchahar Express in the national capital, police said today.

The robbery started from Samaipur Badli railway station at 8:45 pm yesterday and continued till the train reached Udyog Vihar railway station, they said.

The robbers stabbed three passengers, who were rushed to a local hospital and also injured seven others.

Passengers said the robbers boarded the train from Narela railway station.

Pakistan calls for ‘meaningful’ talks on Kashmir

Islamabad, February 05:Ahead of the secretary-level talk with India, Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani Saturday sought to raise the issue of Jammu and Kashmir and urged the Indian side for a “meanignful” dialogue to resolve it.

“I urge India to enter into a meaningful and result-oriented dialogue with Pakistan on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir,” APP quoted Gilani as having said in a statement.

Gilani said Pakistan remains firmly committed to its stance on Jammu and Kashmir.

Dhoni will try to watch National Games for a day

Ranchi, February 05:Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who won’t be present on the opening day of the National Games on February 12, would try to watch the games at least for a day, if he gets a break during World Cup matches.

“I won’t be able to make it for the opening day of the Games following (World Cup) matches, but will try to come for a day to watch live action, if ICC guidelines permit,” Dhoni told reporters here today.

Dhoni visited Khelgaon, the venue of the 34th National Games here, accompanied by the state Sports Minister Sudesh Mahto.

Gujarat riots: govt. issues show-cause notice to IPS officer

Ahmedabad, February 05:Gujarat government has issued a show-cause notice to senior IPS officer Rahul Sharma who had submitted a Compact Disk (CD) containing phone call records of police officials and political leaders to various probe panels inquiring into the 2002 post-Godhra riots.

In-charge DGP of Gujarat, Chitranjan Singh, said a show-cause notice has been issued by Gujarat government to Mr. Sharma through him.

“Yes, I have received a show-cause notice. It is regarding the CD of phone call records,” Mr. Sharma told PTI.

Dadri wetland faces destruction: Environmentalists

Greater Noida, February 05:The Dadri wetland area in Greater Noida, which is home to over 220 species of birds, including the very rare Bristled Grassbirds, is facing destruction from encroachers and builders, environment activists said Saturday.

The uncultivated land here is turned into grasslands and the area now has several such fields, an activist said.

The breeding of the rare Bristled Grassbird has been recorded for the first time ever in this habitat. But private builders are wreaking havoc and the state also is out to destroy it instead of protecting it.

Financial status of Air India reviewed

New Delhi, February 05:The financial status of crisis-ridden Air India and its subsidiary Air India Express came up for review by Civil Aviation Minister Vayalar Ravi here today.

Ravi was briefed by top officials about steps taken by the ailing national carrier on financial restructuring after the government infused additional equity of Rs 1,200 crore in December, official sources said.

Leopard attacks 6-year-old girl

Bahraich, February 05:A six-year-old girl was today attacked by a leopard in the forest area of Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary.

The girl, Manisha, along with her mother had gone to to pick up fire-woods in the Sadar Beat area of the sanctuary when the leopard attacked her inflicting injuries on her stomach and face, WWF project officer Dabeer Hasan said.

The girl has been admitted to a local hospital, Hasan said.

About four such incidents were reported in the area last month also claiming three lives.

Tamil Nadu expects 10 percent growth in 2010-11

Chennai, February 05:The Tamil Nadu government is expecting the state’s economy to log 10 percent growth this fiscal, up from 8.96 percent in 2009-10, state Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan said Saturday.

Presenting the interim budget for 2011-12 in the assembly here, he said: “During 2006-2007, the growth rates at constant prices in agricultural, industrial and service sector were 12.64 percent, 12.91 percent and 16.33 percent, respectively. The overall growth in Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) for 2006-07 was 14.85 percent.”

4 held for killing IBM engineer’s wife, mother

Hyderabad, February 05:In less than four days, Cyberabad police solved the sensational killing of an IBM software engineer’s wife and mother at their apartment in Miyapur. Four persons hailing from Uttar Pradesh, who were working in the under-construction apartment killed the duo to rob the house, police said. Police arrested the accused on Friday and recovered stolen property.
