25 IAS officers transferred in Haryana

Chandigarh, February 08:In a major administrative reshuffle the Haryana government tonight issued transfer and posting orders of 25 IAS officers with immediate effect.

Among those transferred include Balbir Singh Malik, Commissioner Hisar division, who has been made Director environment, Haryana, an official release said here.

Gurgaon Deputy Commissioner R K Kataria has been made administrator, Haryana Urban Development authority Panchkula.

Deputy commissioners of may other districts were among those who were shuffled.

Man held for raping step-daughter

New Delhi, February 08:A 45-year-old man was arrested in the national capital for allegedly raping his step-daughter for the past six months, police said today.

Rajesh Kumar was apprehended after the 14-year-old victim filed a police complaint alleging that she has been sexually assaulted by him, a senior police official said.

The incident was reported from Mongolpuri.

Kumar married the complainant’s mother 10 years ago.

17 killed in Indonesia bus accident

Jakarta, February 08:Seventeen people were killed and 40 others were injured Monday in a bus accident in the Central Java province of Indonesia, Xinhua reported.

The bus plunged into a ravine in the Peringkesit area of Temanggung district, police officer Sugiyono told Xinhua by phone. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Pakistani foreign secretary calls on Krishna

Thimphu, February 08:Pakistani Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir Monday night called on Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna and complimented him for guiding and taking the dialogue process forward.

“The Pakistan Foreign Secretary underlined the desire of Pakistan to have cordial and cooperative ties with India,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Vishnu Prakash said here on the sidelines of the meeting of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) Council of Ministers.

Speaker hopeful of way out, opposition parties stick to stand

New Delhi, February 08:With just two weeks to go for the budget session, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar Monday expressed hope that parliament would function normally even as the opposition parties stuck to their demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the 2G spectrum scam.

The government has convened a meeting Tuesday with all political parties to break the logjam on the issue.

The main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said Monday there was no change in its demand for JPC.

India, Russia sign JV on avionics of fighter aircraft

New Delhi, February 08:Russia today signed a joint venture with India focussing on avionics and processors of frontline fighter aircraft like Sukhoi-30 and Mig-29 in Bangalore, two days before the beginning of Aero India show there.

The joint venture was signed between Russian defence firm Rosoboronexport and Axis Aerospace Technologies (AAT), an Indian company dealing into aerospace technologies.

Besides the existing frontline aircraft, the venture would also cater to the aircraft like MiG-35.

Two illegal arms dealers arrested

Mathura, February 07:Two persons allegedly involved in illegal arms trade were arrested at Dhanauta village near here, police said today.

Tahir and Mufeed were nabbed last night in the village, SP rural Radhey Mohan Bharadwaj told reporters.

One of the two country made pistols recovered from the duo had a ‘Made in Italy’ stamp engraved on it.

Two mobile phones and one Pan card were also found, he said.

The duo has confessed that it was engaged in arms trade and cheated people by claiming that the pistols were manufactured in foreign.

Wildfire destroys 41 houses in Western Australia

PERTH, February 07: Firefighters battled two wildfires in Western Australia on Monday, water bombing them from above as they tried to stop their spread. One on the outskirts of Perth destroyed at least 40 homes and left a firefighter injured, authorities said.

The two blazes have razed 4,000 acres (1,600 hectares) of forested land to the north and southeast of Perth since Saturday, Fire and Emergency Services Authority spokesman Alan Gale said. Several people were treated for smoke inhalation.

Shah Rukh Khan show in Muscat postponed

Muscat, February 07: Shah Rukh Khan’s show, to be held on February 17 at the Qurum Amphitheatre as part of the Muscat Festival, has been postponed.

“Muscat Municipality and Alive Entertainment regret to announce that the award-winning, actor-producer Shah Rukh Khan and the Temptation Reloaded 2011 Tour Concert has been postponed due to delayed filming commitments,” according to a statement issued by Muscat Municipality Monday.

The concert is now postponed until March and the final date will be confirmed soon, the statement added.

Poll panel team to again visit West Bengal

Kolkata, February 07:A high-level Election Commission team that toured West Bengal recently will again come to the poll-bound state to visit its trouble-torn areas, a senior official said Monday.

“The Election Commission has informed that the high-level team will be visiting several parts of the state between February 8 and 14,” said West Bengal’s Additional Chief Electoral Officer N.K. Sahana.

In the latest incident, a Class 11 student of a south Delhi school was gang raped by her neighbour and two of his friends near Bhikaji Cama Place last week. The three youths have been arrested.

Escaped criminal from Jammu caught in Delhi

New Delhi, February 07:A 26-year-old criminal who escaped from a police van in Jammu last week has been arrested here while trying to have his handcuffs removed, police said Monday.

Rahul, detained under the Public Safety Act in Jammu, escaped Feb 1 when he was being taken to a Jammu hospital for medical examination.

According to police, they received a tip Friday that a man was trying to take off his handcuffs near Delite Cinema in the city’s old quarters.

Unidentified men rob city jeweller

New Delhi, February 07:Two unidentified motorcyclists robbed a jeweller in the capital after opening fire at him and one of his employees, police said today.

The incident took place in Peetampura at around 10 pm yesterday and the victims were identified as Ghan Shyam Garg and his employee Akash.

“They have been shot at and were rushed to a nearby hospital. They are in a critical condition. The jeweller has claimed a loss of cash and jewelery worth Rs 4.5 lakh,” a senior police official said.

Ganguly announces retirement from all forms of cricket

Kolkata, February 07:Three days after his chances of playing the fourth Indian Premier League (IPL) were dashed, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly Monday announced his retirement from all forms of the game.

“I see no possibility of playing IPL now. I don’t see any point in continuing playing cricket,” Ganguly said in an exclusive interview to news channel Headlines Today.

“I was playing Ranji Trophy only to stay fit for IPL,” Ganguly said, two years after quitting international cricket.

Woman, lover arrested for husband’s murder

New Delhi, February 07:Delhi police arrested a 26-year-old married woman along with her paramour and two associates on charges of killing her husband, an official said Monday.

Navinder Rawat was shot from close range in Khanpur area of south Delhi Feb 3 when he was walking home along with his mother and uncle, a police official said.

He was rushed to Batra Hospital where he was declared brought dead, said police.

Rawat’s wife Aarti, who worked in a call centre in Noida, Rishi Kumar (30) and his associates Sumit Kumar (20) and Parveen (21) were arrested Sunday, he added.

Efforts on to free Indians from Pakistan jails, court told

New Delhi, February 07:The central government Monday told the Supreme Court that it has been “consistently” taking up the issue of release of Indian prisoners in Pakistani jails with the government in that country.

The matter was taken up in the course of the talks between foreign ministers, home ministers and foreign secretaries of both the countries at different points of time, the government told the apex court bench of Justice Markandey Katju and Justice B.S. Chauhan.

No question of TRS merging with Congress: KCR

Hyderabad, February 07:Dismissing a senior Congress leader’s proposal of a merger with it as “joke of the year”, TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao today ruled out any such possibility.

“TRS is not a cinema party (like Praja Rajyam). We are a very strong party. Leaders and workers from other parties are joining TRS like a flood. TRS is born to achieve separate Telangana.
