NHRC recommends CBI probe into Chittoor encounter

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday recommended CBI probe into killing of 20 alleged red-sandalwood smugglers in an encounter with the police.

The alleged red-sandalwood smugglers were killed on April 7 in Seshachalam forest near Tirupati in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. Besides recommending CBI probe, the NHRC also ordered Andhra Pradesh Government to pay Rs 8 lakh interim compensation to the family of deceased. According to Justice D Murugesan of NHRC, the AP Government was ye to sent its reports to the Commission on the encounter. (INN)

3 Manipuri youths arrested for illegally entering school

Three Manipuri youths, one of them a minor, were arrested by Delhi police today at around 3 am for illegally entering the campus of Mount Carmel School in Anand Niketan south Delhi with the alleged intention of committing burglary and vandalising the institute.

William Hangsha (19), Rohul Moirangthen (20) and the minor were arrested by police who were posted at the school and a torch and a screw driver were recovered from them.

Bombs discovered near rail tracks

Five bombs were today recovered near railway tracks at Sugnibad village in Dumka district, police said here.

On a tip-off, police found the explosives in a bag lying on the tracks, Deputy Superintendent of Police Pitambar Singh Kherwar said, adding that the bombs were defused.

The 8619 Jassidih-Dumka local train was stopped near Ghormara railway station after the police informed the railway authorities about the discovery of bomb, Dumka station master Sriprakash said.

AP Police recover 300 years old idol

A special team formed by Nellore police today recovered a 300 years old ‘panch-loha’ (five-metal) Shiva idol and arrested 12 men of a gang which targeted temples.

Inspector general of police, south zone, N Sanjay said the idol had been stolen from Kasiviswandh temple in April.

Police today arrested 12 members of the gang and recovered the five-foot idol from a car. The idol was worth crores of rupees in the international market, according to police.

Painter killed by younger brother for property

A 35-year-old painter was allegedly killed by his younger brother following a dispute over ancestral property.

According to Shalibanda police, the victim, M Dasu Shankar, was allegedly beaten by his younger brother Anil Kumar on Wednesday night at his residence in Kalvagadda. Shankar died on the spot. They were having a dispute over property since the death of their mother about four months ago. A case of murder under Section 302 has been registered against Anil Kumar. Further investigations are on, Shalibanda Inspector Maheshwar said. (INN)

Labourer falls in manhole, dies

A 52-year-old labourer died after accidentally falling into a manhole while cleaning it.

According to Saroornagar police, the deceased, K Lakshmaiah of Kodandaram Nagar was cleaning the drainage on Wednesday evening. However, he accidentally fell down into the manhole and died instantaneously. (INN)

Engineering student among two killed in road accidents

A 20-year-old student died on the spot while his friend got injured when the motorcycle they were riding on lost control and hit a road divider.

The accident occurred on Laxmireddy Palem Road on Thursday morning. The victim, A Tarun Kumar, and his friend Rajesh, were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where Tarun was declared brought dead. Tarun was a native of Anantapur and was doing his B Tech 2nd year from St Mary’s Engineering College, according to Hayathnagar police.

UN votes to safeguard Iraq’s cultural heritage

The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution to protect Iraq’s ancient treasures from damage, looting and smuggling.

The resolution was proposed by Germany and Iraq and co-sponsored by Italy on Thursday.

The resolution “Saving the Cultural Heritage of Iraq” condemns the deliberate destruction of cultural treasures, urges nations to step up efforts to protect them and says their desecration may amount to war crimes.

Egypt PM receives 8,000 e-mails from citizens in 24 hours

The newly-created presidential e-mail of Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi received 8,000 messages in 24 hours, a media report said.

The presidential e-mail — media.office8@op.gov.eg — announced by the presidency on Tuesday is meant for Sisi to communicate personally with Egyptian citizens and address their inquiries, concerns and recommendations.

Among the 8,000 messages, some 50 percent were complaints, 20 percent suggestions and 26 percent praise, Xinhua reported, citing the state-run Ahram news website, on Thursday.

RGCB will emerge as major growth centre: Harsh Vardhan

Union Minister for Science and Technology Dr Harsh Vardhan has expressed confidence that the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) here will emerge as a major growth centre in the biotech and bio-pharma sectors.

The minister, who was recently in Kerala for three days, posted a message on his Facebook account saying RGCB would offer state-of-the art ‘test and prove’ platforms to investors in these sectors.

These platforms will be used to carry out pre-clinical, analytical, toxicological and biological assays to validate biotech or biological products.

SI firing main accused held

In a breakthrough in the Girish Park firing here in April in which a police officer was injured, main accused Gopal Tewari was arrested this evening.

“Gopal Tewari was arrested from a hotel at Baguihati this evening,” a senior police official told PTI.

Police were on the trail of Tewari since the incident on April 18 soon after the civic polls got over. Sub-Inspector of Girish Park police station Jagannathan Mondal was injured in the attack.

Police earlier seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition from Tewari’s residence.

Four persons have been arrested in the case so far.

Telangana EAMCET results declared

Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari declared the results of Engineering, Agriculture and Medicine Common Entrance Test (EAMCET) at the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) auditorium here on Thursday.

As many 90,556 or 70.6% candidates have qualified for Engineering while 75,794 or 85.9% aspirants have passed the entrance test for Agriculture and Medicine streams. Girls have outperformed boys in the medicine stream.

While 128,174 candidates had appeared for the engineering, 92,362 students wrote the entrance exam in the medical stream on May 14.

KCR will rule for next 30 years

Telangana Information Technology Minister K Tarakarama Rao on Thursday claimed that his father and Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao will rule the State at least for the next 30 years.

Participating in the Meet The Press programme here, KTR said that his father was in perfect health and highly active. He is just 62 years young and therefore, he will be able to run the government for the next 30 years. He said he never got the thought of inheriting political legacy of his father. He said that all TRS leaders work as a team and there were not differences among them.

Youth arrested for assaulting police constable in Chandigarh

21-year-old youth has been arrested for allegedly thrashing a police constable here and filming it, police said today.

Some hooligans, including the accused Harish Kamboj, a resident of Sirsa in Haryana, in October last year assaulted police constable Manoj who was on routine duty and also made a video of the incident, they said.

An FIR under relevant sections was registered, police said, adding investigation to apprehend other accused is underway.

A 23-year-old youth committed suicide when the parents of the girl, he was in love with, rejected the marriage proposal.

According to Shamshabad Rural police, the deceased, D Keshava of Gollapally was in one-sided love with a girl Monika of Gaganpahad. At his instance, Keshava’s parents had sent a marriage proposal which was rejected by the girl’s parents. Upset with the development, Keshava consumed some unknown poison on May 23 and died at the Osmania General Hospital on Tuesday night. (INN)
