Workers Clean up Dead Fish and Algae in Greens’ Pond

Dubai, August 03: Cleaners worked through the day to clear a pond between The Links and The Greens of algae and hundreds of dead fish which had floated to the surface during the weekend.

Residents in the area complained of the smell from the area, particularly with the heat of Dubai summer aggravating the situation.

It is the second time hundreds of the fish, of the Aphanius species, were found dead in the same pond in just over one week with a Emaar spokesperson then also attributing it to the short lifespan of the fish.

Ferry Dubai to Serve The World, Palm Projects

Dubai, August 03: Ferry Dubai will serve The World and The Palm as part of theThe Marine Agency’s strategy to serve Nakheel development projects.

“A meeting reviewed the design of The World project and a priority list was set for the project to match with the approved schedules of works undertaken by Nakheel. “A new strategy has been developed for improved cooperation with the developers and landlords of The World and The Palm in order to provide the required infrastructure” said Dr. Khalid Al Zahid, acting CEO of Marine 
Agency in the Roads and Transport 
Authority (RTA).

Parking Spaces to be Mandatory

Abu Dhabi, August 03: Landlords of multi-storey residential and commercial buildings will have to ensure parking space for each apartment owner or lessee if a federal draft law being planned by the Ministry of Justice comes into force.

A source told that municipalities will be told not to issue permits for construction of residential buildings unless the number of parking spaces matches the apartments and commercial offices in the building.

The draft law is expected to stipulate that landlords of commercial buildings should provide enough parking slots for their customers.

Dubai Municipality Urges Action on Food Advisories

Dubai, August 03: Dubai Municipality is planning to encourage all restaurants in the emirate to issue advisories to consumers on safe handling of takeaway food.

The decision follows a similar initiative by a popular south Indian restaurant group that attaches red stickers to its takeaway bags at its two outlets in Dubai. A municipality official applauded the group’s move and said the civic body intended to support such initiatives by other restaurants as well.

Dusty Conditions to Prevail

Abu Dhabi, August 03: The dusty weather conditions will prevail moderately today and visibility levels are expected to improve, particularly in the Western Region, where it had dropped to 200-300 metres on Sunday, the National Centre of Meteorology and 
Seismology said.

Met officials urged motorists to drive slow and fishermen not to venture out to sea. Asthma patients and children, too, were asked to remain indoors.

On Sunday, the visibility levels in the capital and other parts of the country as Al Ain and Dubai fluctuated between 1,000 and 3,000 metres.

STRAWBERRY CAKE RECIPE

Learn how to make this classic strawberry cake made of strawberries, eggs and vanilla extract.

Ingredients:

1 cup white sugar
2 eggs
1 3/4 tsp baking powder
1 cup icing sugar
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup frozen strawberries
1 vanilla pudding cup
1 1/2 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup butter
2 tsp vanilla extract

How to make strawberry cake:

Start by thawing the frozen strawberries in one cup of powder sugar.
In a separate bowl beat together sugar and butter until creamy.
Add in the eggs one at a time and then finely pour in the vanilla pudding. Add the thawed strawberries.

CHOCOLATE COCONUT CAKE RECIPE

Scrumptious chocolate coconut cake made from desicated coconut, cocoa, margarine and milk.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 oz. desicated coconut
1/2 cup milk
4 oz. margarine
6 oz. sugar
2 eggs
4 oz. plain flour
1 level tsp cocoa
pinch of salt
1 tspful baking powder

How to make chocolate coconut cake:

Soak the coconut in the milk for 1/2 hour.
Cream fat and sugar, add the lightly beaten eggs and then the coconut and milk.
Stir in the well-sieved dry ingredients, mix well and turn into a greased lined tin 10 inch by 8 inch.
Bake in a moderate oven for 30-40 minutes.

MANGO JELLY RECIPE

Ingredients:

1/2 kg ripe and hard Mango slices (not fully ripe)
3 cups Sugar (Cheeni)
1 3/4 cups Water
juice of one Lemon (Nimbu)

How to make mango jelly:

Put mango slices, water into deep pan, and cook until quite tender.
Remove from the fire.
Pass through a gravy strainer.
To the mango pulp add sugar and lemon juice and cook on a hot fire, stirring constantly until the jelly sets when tested.
Cool a little, and then pour in sterilized jars.

PINEAPPLE JAM RECIPE

Ingredients:

250 grams Pineapple (Ananas) pieces
250 grams Sugar (Cheeni)
1/2 teaspoon citric acid
1/4 teaspoon yellow color
2 1/2 cups Water

How to make pineapple jam:

Cook the pineapple pieces with water on a low fire until tender and 1 cup water is left.
Add sugar cook until it is dissolved.
Add citric acid and color, cook until setting point is reached.
Pour into a jar and cork tightly.

SC cautions courts on bails for accused in flesh trade cases

New Delhi, August 02: The Supreme Court has deplored the practice of courts casually granting bails to persons accused of heinous offences like coercing minor girls into prostitution racket.

“It is unfortunate that the investigating officers and the courts ordinarily fail to bear in mind a distinction between the rescued children including girls, on the one hand, and the persons who have been organising such immoral traffic in a systematic manner and have otherwise been aiding and abetting the commission of offences thereunder.

Congress all set for tough bargaining with Pawar

New Delhi, August 02: Buoyed by the good show in the Lok Sabha elections, Congress is all set for hard bargaining with Sharad Pawar over seat sharing in the coming Assembly polls in Maharashtra, harping on the fact that it emerged as the top party in the state while NCP was at the fourth spot.

“The strategy is not to break the alliance, but to have it on the terms of the Congress by telling Pawar to see reason in the wake of the changed scenario,” said a Union Minister from Maharashtra, who did not wish to be identified.

Raids on medical shops intensified

Hyderabad, August 02: The Drugs Control Administration has intensified raids on medical shops dispensing drugs in the absence of registered pharmacists.

Director-General of Drugs and Copyrights, Drugs Control Administration, R. P .Meena, said in a press release here on Saturday that all drug inspectors and assistant directors throughout the State had been instructed to take stringent action against all such medical shops.

Labourer ‘gang-raped’

Hyderabad, August 02: A labourer from Mahbubnagar, hired to work at a cattle shed, was allegedly gang-raped by three youngsters at MD lines in Golconda on Friday night.

The 25-year-old married woman was made her to stay back till it became dark to clean the shed. The accused Khaled allegedly dragged her inside a room near the shed and violated her. Khaled’s friend Naushad and another shed worker, Ram Jatan Choudhary also raped the woman, Golconda Inspector Chandrashekhar Reddy told reporters.

Troops patrol Pakistani city after riots kill 8

Lahore, August 02: Paramilitary troops patrolled the streets of an eastern Pakistani city on Sunday after eight Christians died in riots led by Muslims, according to police.

Hundreds of Muslims burned and looted Christian homes in the city of Gorja in a rampage sparked by allegations that a Quran had been defaced. Shooting broke out, and six people were killed, including a child and four women. Two men wounded by gunfire died in the hospital overnight.

‘War not the solution, ready to discuss all issues with India’

Islamabad, August 02: Pakistan is ready to discuss all outstanding issues, including Kashmir, with India as war is not the solution to any problem, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said.

It is necessary to resolve all issues between India and Pakistan so that the countries could give attention to the problems of the people, he said in an interview to a TV news channel.

Replying to a question about Pakistan’s relations with India, he said Islamabad has always maintained that the ties “should be on the basis of equality”.

Parliament to decide Musharraf’s fate: Gilani

Islamabad, August 02: Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that the final decision regarding the fate of former President General Pervez Musharraf would be taken by Parliament.

Commenting on the Supreme Court’s verdict that declared Musharraf’s November 3, 2007 declaration of Emergency as ‘extra-judicial and unconstitutional’, Gilani said Parliament is the appropriate forum to take decisions of national interest.

One dead, 15 injured in Canada stage collapse

Camrose, August 02: One person was killed and at least 15 were injured after a storm whipped through an outdoor country music festival, causing a stage to collapse.

Strong winds and heavy rain began hitting the Big Valley Jamboree in Camrose, east of Edmonton, around 6.00 pm Saturday, said Camrose Police Chief Darrell Kambeitz. He confirmed the one death and said all 15 injured were taken to hospitals.

Former Iranian president denounces protesters’ trial

Tehran, August 02: Former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami, a key opposition supporter, denounced on Sunday the trial of around 100 people accused of rioting after the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

“As per my information, what was done yesterday is against the Constitution, regular laws and rights of the citizens,” his office quoted him as telling a group of political activists and lawmakers.

He said the court had relied on “confessions taken under certain circumstances which are not valid.”

Police in manhunt for Tel Aviv gay club shooter

Jerusalem, August 02: Hundreds of police officers were scouring the streets of Tel Aviv on Sunday in a door-to-door manhunt for a gunman who opened fire on a gay youth club.

A masked man entered a club for gay teens late Saturday, pulled out a pistol and shot in all directions, killing two and injuring 11, four seriously, police said.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the man then holstered his pistol and fled the scene by foot to the busy streets of Tel Aviv.

Nitzan Horowitz, Israel’s only openly gay lawmaker, said the attack had all the symptoms of a “hate crime”.

Plane carrying 16 disappears over Indonesian Papua

Jakarta, August 02: A plane carrying 16 people disappeared over eastern Indonesia on Sunday, an airline official said.

The Twin Otter plane was on a commercial flight in the remote Papua region when it lost contact with ground officials, said Capt Nikmatullah, the director of operations of the airline operating the plane, Merpati Nusantara.

Nikmatullah, who goes by a single name, said no trace had been found of the plane more then four hours after it took off. The aircraft was carrying enough fuel to keep it in the air for 3 1/2 hours, he told Metro TV station.

Malaysia to amend, not repeal, ‘draconian’ detention law

Kuala Lumpur, August 02: The Malaysian government Sunday said it would amend, but not repeal, the Internal Security Act (ISA) — the preventive detention law the opposition considers draconian.

The government said it would amend the Act but provisions pertaining to national security would be retained after thousands of protesters defied police restrictions and staged demonstrations at several places in the national capital Saturday, demanding that the law be repealed.

Police used water cannons to disperse protesters and detained 238 demonstrators.

‘Singh, Zardari want to make possible lessening of tensions’

London, August 02: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari want to make possible “a lessening of tensions” after the Mumbai attacks, British Premier Gordon Brown has said, expressing willingness to do everything he can to help the two countries build better ties. “I have a very strong affinity with the region. I’m particularly friendly for many years with Prime Minister Singh in India,” Brown told ‘Garavi Gujarat’, a Gujarati-English bilingual weekly and its sister publication ‘Eastern Eye’.
