IEA official warns of shrinking oil supplies: Report

London, August 03: A disastrous energy crunch is looming because most of the major oil fields in the world have passed their peak production, a leading economist warned Monday.

Fatih Birol, chief economist with Paris-based International Energy Agency, said such an “oil crunch” within the next five years could jeopardise recovery from the global recession.

Higher oil prices brought on by a rapid increase in demand and a stagnation, or even decline, in supply could derail the recovery, Birol said in an interview with The Independent newspaper.

Officials see US economic growth in 2nd half

New York, August 03: Top US administration officials said that economic growth is highly likely to resume in the second half of the year, but warned of “hard choices” to contain rising deficits once recovery is assured.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner would not rule out higher taxes in the future, telling ABC television, “We’re going to have to do what is necessary.”

Govt firm on ‘no bailout’ as private airlines call off strike

New Delhi, August 03: Even as private airlines called off their planned August 18 strike on Sunday night, the government stood firm and ruled out any financial bailout for the aviation sector.

Talking to reporters, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said, “There is no question of a financial bailout of private airlines.” Reasoning the decision, Patel said that “we are not even bailing out Air India which is owned by the government”.

West Indies beat Bangladesh by 5 wickets in T20

Basseterre, August 03: The West Indies romped to a five-wicket victory over Bangladesh in a Twenty20 match on Sunday after a disciplined bowling performance and four run outs from direct hits in the field.

The home team, weakened throughout the series by the absence of its leading players due to contract wrangles, finally won its first match against Bangladesh on tour after the visitors had swept the preceding test and one-day series.

The West Indies, led by two wickets and two run outs from Darren Sammy, limited Bangladesh to 118-9 off 20 overs at Warner Park.

India, China to cooperate over Himalayan glaciers: Jairam

London, August 03: India and China are in talks to monitor the melting of glaciers in the Himalayas, a border region crucial to both countries’ water supplies, Minister for Environment Jairam Ramesh has said.

“We are talking to the Chinese about monitoring the Himalayan glaciers,” Ramesh told the a newspaper.

However, he said India would not allow Chinese scientists “to climb all over India’s glaciers” but wanted a collaborative research programme.

Sahara desert becoming green due to climate change

Washington, August 03: Scientists are now seeing signals that the Sahara desert and surrounding regions are greening due to increasing rainfall, all thanks to the rising temperatures due to climate change.

According to a report in National Geographic News, if sustained, these rains could revitalize drought-ravaged regions, reclaiming them for farming communities.

This desert-shrinking trend is supported by climate models, which predict a return to conditions that turned the Sahara into a lush savanna some 12,000 years ago.

New HIV strain discovered in woman from Cameroon

Washington, August 03: A new strain of the virus that causes AIDS has been discovered in a woman from the African nation of Cameroon. It differs from the three known strains of human immunodeficiency virus and appears to be closely related to a form of simian virus recently discovered in wild gorillas, researchers report in Monday’s edition of the journal Nature Medicine.

Saudi Arabia executes Nigerian murderer

Riyadh, August 03: A Nigerian man convicted of murdering a Saudi national after robbing him, tying him up and leaving him to die, was beheaded by the sword on Sunday, the interior ministry said.

Qorbi bin Musa Adam was executed the Red Sea port city of Jeddah for killing Ibrahim Al Assiri, who apparently suffocated to death, the ministry said in a statement carried by the official SPA news agency.

Adam stole money from Assiri, then beat him, bound his hands and feet and stuck a tape over his mouth, it said.

Remains of pilot missing 18 years in Iraq found

Baghdad, August 03: The remains of the first American lost in the Gulf War have been found in Iraq, the military said on Sunday, after struggling for nearly two decades with the question of whether he was dead or alive.

The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology has positively identified the remains of Captain Michael “Scott” Speicher, whose disappearance has bedeviled investigators since his jet was shot down over the Iraq desert on the first night of the 1991 war.

The top Navy officer said the discovery illustrates the military’s commitment to bring its troops home.

Qaeda group claims deadly attack on Algerian soldiers

Dubai, August 03: Al Qaeda’s North African wing has claimed it was behind an ambush of an Algerian military convoy in which at least 11 soldiers were killed, US-based monitoring group SITE Intelligence said on Sunday.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) said in an Internet statement it had launched the July 29 attack near the town of Tipaza in Algeria and had killed at least 15 soldiers, said SITE, which monitors Islamist websites.

Saddam’s henchmen get 7 years jail

Baghdad, August 03: Iraq’s top court on Sunday jailed former deputy premier Tareq Aziz and Saddam Hussein’s hatchet-man ‘Chemical Ali’ Hassan Al Majid for seven years each for expelling Kurds

from northern Iraq almost three decades ago, state television said.

Aziz and Majid were among eight people on trial in Iraq’s High Tribunal for chasing the Fayli — Shia Kurds — out of the northern provinces of Kirkuk and Diyala in 1980.

Bahrain Expats Welcome Labour Reforms Businesses Wary

Manama, August 03: Bahrain’s launch of labour friendly initiatives allowing expatriates to change jobs without no-objection certificates from sponsors has received a thumping welcome from workers, while businessmen pressed on with their reservations about the reform.

The new rules became effective from August 1 under the Labour Market Reform Law implemented last year.

A Bangladeshi national, Abdulkhaliq Mohammed, said sponsorship reforms would end exploitation of workers.

Nigerian commerce minister to visit India

Abuja, August 03: Nigeria’s Commerce Minister Chief Achike Udenwa will lead a delegation to India in September in a bid to strengthen economic ties and encourage investment in diverse areas of the West African country’s economy.

Udenwa tied his upcoming visit to new expectations by Nigeria in terms of commerce and trade with India.

FIA grounds private airlines’ August 18 strike plan

New Delhi, August 03: Facing the threat of stern government action, private airlines which carry about one lakh domestic passengers each day tonight called of their strike on August 18 giving relief to air travellers after two more carriers pulled out of the planned unprecedented stoppage.

The Federation of Indian Airlines(FIA) which gave the strike call last Friday announced the decision in view of the “agitating public sentiments” and the potential inconvenience to thousands of passengers and the government’s “willingness” to enter into a dialogue.

MURG KALI MIRCH RECIPE

Ingredients:

salt to taste
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 kg chicken
25 – 30 peppercorns
3/4 cup tomatoes chopped
1/2 cup onions sliced
1 tblsp coriander powder
6 – 8 cloves
8 – 10 curry leaves
2 tsp garlic chopped
3 tblsp oil

How to make murg kali mirch :

Clean, wash and skin the chicken.
Cut it into twelve pieces.
Lb peppercorns to a coarse powder.
Mix salt, crushed peppercorns and turmeric powder with the chicken pieces.
Keep aside for half an hour.
Heat up oil in a kadhai.
Mix in cut onions and cloves.
Stir fry on medium heat up till onions are light brown.

SARSON KA SAAG

Ingredients:

500gms Mustard leaves
200gms Spinach
200gms Bathuwa
3 Garlic cloves
1 inch Ginger
2 Green chilli
Salt To Taste
1 tbsp Maize flour
1 Pinch Sugar
2 tbsp Ghee
1 Asafoetida
1 Pinch Onions,
1 tsp chopped Red chilli powder
1 Pinch Turmeric powder

Preparation:

Clean and wash sarson, spinach and bathuwa. Chop the leaves finely.
Chop ginger, garlic cloves and chillies.
Pressure cook the spinach, sarson, bathuwa with garlic, ginger and chillies. When cool, grind it to smooth paste.

ACHARI MUTTON RECIPE

Ingredients:

1/2 cup coriander leaves chopped
1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
1 tsp fennel seeds
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
800 gms mutton800 gms.
1 tsp turmeric powder
8 red chillies whole
1 tsp red chilli powder
4 medium tomatoes
5 cloves
1 tsp onion seeds
7 tblsp mustard oil
2 tblsp ginger chopped
4 medium onions
salt to taste
1 tblsp garlic chopped
1 tsp mustard seeds

How to make achari mutton :

Wash and cut the mutton into 11/2″ cubes.
Take off and cut the onions.
Cut the tomatoes.
Roast the whole spices separately and grind everything coarsely.

Iranian Filmmaker Held, Opium Seized

Dubai, August 03: A leading Iranian filmmaker was arrested at Dubai International Airport on Friday after 3.4g of opium was recovered from his possession, according to an officer from Dubai Police.

The black-robed filmmaker, who disembarked from an Iran Air flight around 1pm, aroused the suspicion of a Dubai Customs officer.

A search of his baggage revealed nothing incriminatory, but on frisking the filmmaker, the officer found the contraband concealed in his trouser’s hip pocket.

The filmmaker claimed that he had brought the contraband for his personal use.

Man Pleads Not Guilty to Killing Girlfriend

Dubai, August 03: A 31-year-old Indian on Sunday pleaded not guilty to killing his girlfriend and stealing Dh300 from her after an argument over the money she owed to him.

The defendant confessed to the police that after accompanying his Burmese girlfriend to Al Mamzar Park on February 15, 2009, he took her home by taxi, said Sergeant Mohammed Al Badly of Dubai Police in the Criminal Court of First Instance.

Upon arrival, he decided to walk the victim to her door where an argument over money took place.

No Validity for Disclaimers

Dubai, August 03: A Dubai Municipality official on Sunday said the civic body will not accept disclaimers issued by restaurants if any food safety issue arises because they were at fault.

The response from the Director of Food Control Department, Khalid Mohammed Sherif, comes after 
Kempinski Hotel in Mall of the Emirates started asking its customers to sign disclaimers.

Road Network Improvements in Capital

Abu Dhabi, August 03: Abu Dhabi Municipality will spend Dh5 million in improvement and maintenance of the road network at Mussafah Industrial Zone.

Adel Al Rabia, Director of Media and Public Relations, Abu Dhabi Muncipality, said the project, which commenced in mid-July, is part of the civic body’s objectives to upgrade infrastructure.

“The aim is to raise the efficiency of roads in the zone to 100 per cent,’’ he said, adding the first phase which involved maintenance of traffic signs had been completed.

Rich Fare in Store for Classical Music

Abu Dhabi, August 03: The New York Philharmonic will open the second season of Abu Dhabi Classics, on October 23.

The first 2008-2009 eight months of a long season of classical music was already considered a success by its organiser, the Abu Dhabi authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), with 35,000 people attending the concerts.

For the 2009/10 season, executive director Till Janczukowicz has announced an expansion of the educational programme, done with the help of three world leading orchestras — the New York Philharmonic, the Philharmonia of London and the Vienna.
