Rahul Gandhi to address Congress workers in UP today

Lucknow, August 06: The Congress headquarters in the Uttar Pradesh capital is all decked up for the visit of party general secretary Rahul Gandhi, who is arriving here Thursday afternoon to address party leaders and workers.

According to state Congress spokesman Subodh Srivastava, Gandhi will land here around 3 p.m. and head straight for the party office to address a meeting of the party coordination committee at 3.30 p.m. The meet is intended to energise the party cadres and prepare them for the next assembly elections, due in 2012.

ALOO METHI RECIPE

ALOO METHI RECIPE
Ingredients:

1 1/2 cup fresh methi (fenugreek) leaves (cleaned, washed and finely chopped)
2-3 medium peeled and cut into small pieces aloo (potatoes)
1 medium tomato (chopped)
1-2 flakes of garlic (crushed)
Salt To Taste
1/4th tsp turmeric powder
Red chili powder to taste
1/2 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
2-3 whole dry red chilies
2-3 tbsp vegetable oil

Preparation:

Heat oil and add crushed garlic and fry till brown. Add cumin seeds and dry red chilies.

MALAI KOFTA RECIPE

Ingredients:

For the Kofta:

1 1/2 lb. potatoes
2 heaped tbsp each of crumbled paneer,
khoya and thick malai(You can substitute this with baked ricotta cheese and heavy cream)
4-5 cashewnuts chopped
1 tbsp raisins
2-3 finely chopped green chillies
1/4 tsp sugar
1 tsp coriander powder
1 tsp cumin powder
1 tsp red-chilli powder
1/2 tsp cardammom powder
Salt To Taste
3 tbsp cooking oil/ghee(clarified butter)
Oil for frying the koftas
For the gravy:
2 medium onions,chopped
3 flakes garlic,crushed
1 inch ginger,crushed
3 large tomatoes,pureed

Sensex down 140 points in opening trade

Mumbai, August 06: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex fell over 140 points in opening trade today as foreign funds and retail investors preferred to book profits amid weak US markets.

The BSE-30 share benchmark Sensex, which had gained 72.85 points in yesterday’s volatile session, moved down by 140.46 points or 0.88 percent to 15,763.37 in opening trade.

Similarly, the Nifty index on the wide-based National Stock Exchange lost 41.70 points to 4,652.45.

Oil retreats in Asian trade

Singapore, August 06: Oil retreated modestly in Asian trade on Thursday after overnight gains that were fuelled by the weakening dollar, analysts said.

New York’s main contract, light sweet crude for September delivery eased 32 cents to USD 71.65 a barrel. Brent North Sea crude for September delivery dropped 37 cents to USD 75.14 barrel.

Both contracts closed stronger yesterday as investors returned to commodities including oil, drawn by the weakening US currency which makes crude futures an attractive investment option.

European Central Bank rate to stay at 1.0% analysts

Frankfurt, August 06: The European Central Bank was set on Thursday to leave its main interest rate steady at a record low of 1.0 percent, analysts say, despite tighter credit and concern the eurozone could be hit by deflation.

A poll of 46 economists by Dow Jones Newswires found all expected the ECB to leave its benchmark lending rate unchanged as policymakers take a summer break.

Comments by members of the bank’s governing council in the past month “suggest a status quo on rates,” Natixis economist Cedric Thellier said.

United Nations, August 06: As a major contributor to the peacekeeping missions of the United Nations, India Thursday said the mandate of the world body’s peacekeeping missions are too broad and there is very little co-relation with its ability to deliver.

Sub Divisional Magistrate found dead

New Delhi, August 06: A woman Sub Divisional Magistrate was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her car in Outer Delhi Thursday morning.

The body of Meera, the Sub Divisional Magistrate of Model Town, was found in her car in Sector 15 of Rohini at 7:15 am, a senior police official said.

She is a resident of Paschim Vihar, the official said adding her family had been informed about the incident. Further investigations are on.

The official said the car of the 44-year-old SDM was badly damaged and it appeared that it was hit by a hard object.

Manner of land acquisition in WB a mistake: Amartya Sen

Kolkata, August 06: Despite the “overwhelming” need for industry in West Bengal, the manner in which the state government acquired land for the purpose was a “mistake,” Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen has said.

“There is an overwhelming need for industry so that this poor state can flourish again. (But) The way that land was acquired was a mistake. If one needs industry, there has to be land, but acquisition of land should have been the last resort,” Sen said at an interaction after the 3rd Annual Penguin Lecture here last evening.

Swine Flu Cases in Oman on the Rise

Muscat, August 06: With the detection of 30 more cases over the past three days, the number of people affected by Swine Flu in Oman has risen to 125, the National Committee for Follow-Up and Control of H1N1 said.

It also said that all cases discovered until last week had now fully recovered except one patient who was receiving treatment and in stable condition.

Teen US bomb plotter agrees to 10 years in prison

South Carolina, August 06: A U.S. teen admitted to plotting to blow up his high school Wednesday, and prosecutors agreed to ask for a 10-year prison sentence.

Ryan Schallenberger, 19, pleaded guilty to receiving and attempting to receive an explosive and attempting to damage and destroy real property by explosive. He could have faced up to 30 years in prison. A judge must approve the sentence at a hearing to be held later.

US judge jails three over tech exports to China

Los Angeles, August 06: A US judge has sentenced two Chinese nationals and a Chinese-American to up to five years in jail in two separate cases involving the export of sensitive technology to China, officials said.

William Chi-Wai Tsu, a 61-year-old Chinese American who was formerly the vice-president of a California trading firm, was handed a 40-month sentence by the judge in California.

He had been found guilty of seeking to export thumbnail-sized devices that can be used in high-tech communication and military radar systems, according to a statement from the US justice department.

US still seeks confirmation on Americans detained by Iran

Washington, August 06: The State Department said Wednesday it has still not been able to officially confirm the arrest in Iran of three Americans who hiked across Iraq’s border.

The Swiss ambassador in Tehran, who represents US interests in Iran, inquired about the arrests with the Iranian Foreign Ministry but was unable to get further information about the Americans, said State Department spokesman Robert Wood.

UN chief hopes release spurs NKorea nuke talks

United Nations, August 06: Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed hope Wednesday that North Korea’s release of two American journalists will lead to a resumption of talks on eliminating its nuclear weapons program.

Ban told reporters he welcomed the release of Laura Ling and Euna Lee, who were detained at the Chinese-North Korean border in March and sentenced in June to 12 years of hard labor for illegal entry into the North and engaging in “hostile acts.”

Blast walls on major Baghdad streets to come down

Baghdad, August 06: The towering concrete blast walls that have both protected and suffocated Baghdad streets for the past two years will come down within 40 days, Iraq’s government announced Wednesday.

Although the walls helped reduce violence, they are unsightly towering reminders for Baghdad residents that their riverside capital of leafy neighborhoods and palm-lined boulevards has turned into a prison-like city of shadows separating one community from another.

Brighter, Bolder Look for Dubai Taxi Number Plates

Dubai, August 06: New York City has its iconic yellow cabs and now Dubai hopes its taxis will be eye-catching with new yellow number plates.

The Roads and Transports Authority (RTA) this week began replacing the black plates on the emirate’s 7,400 taxis as part of an ongoing drive of maintaining and revamping the transport sector. The change to bright yellow plates featuring black letters and digits will be completed by January 1 next year.

Food Poisoning Cases Drive Dubai to Raise Safety Awareness

Dubai, August 06: Dubai is gearing up for its biggest-ever food safety awareness campaign after a spate of 60 cases of food poisoning, including high-profile deaths, this year.

The emirate’s civic body also has launched a programme upgrading food safety and targeting the poorest performing eateries after closing 65 by the end of July for violating safety
regulations.

The details of the campaign and the violations registered have been issued amid growing concern over food safety after the death of at least three Dubai children due to suspected food poisoning in recent months.

BADAM KA SHARBAT RECIPE

Here’s a tasty sharbat recipe with badam (almond) flavour. Learn how to make badam ka sharbat.

Ingredients:

1/2 kg almond (badam)
2 kg sugar
1 kg water
1 tsp saffron (kesar)
1 tsp green cardamom powder (hari elaichi)
1/2 tsp potassium meta bi sulphate

How to make badam ka sharbat :

Soak badam in water for 8-10 hours.
Peel the outer covering.
Boil sugar, water, kesar and elaichi powder in it.
Boil it to one sugar syrup strand.
Let it cool, then add some syrup to badam and grind it to a fine paste.
Add syrup and potassium meta bi sulphate to the above.

BANANA SHAKE RECIPE

Ingredients:

2 cup Milk (Doodh)
1 firm ripe Banana (Kela)
2 tblsp Sugar (Cheeni)
1/4 tsp ground Nutmeg (Jaiphal)

How to make banana shake:

Place the milk in a heavy-bottomed pan over a high heat.
Bring it to boil, stirring constantly, then reduce the heat and simmer for 2 minutes.
While the milk is simmering, place a banana, sugar and nutmeg in a blender and process until pureed.
Pour 1 cup milk into the blender and process for another minute.
Add the remaining milk and process for 1/2 minute.
Pour the milk in warmed mugs or cups and serve immediately.

Mushroom Soup

Ingredients:

2 cups Mushrooms
2 cups Chicken or veg stock
3 nos. Egg yolks
1 cup Milk
1/8 tsp Black pepper
4 tbsps Butter or margarine
1/4 tsp Salt

How to make mushroom soup:

Melt the butter in a pan, add the mushrooms and cook them for 5 minutes stirring constantly.
Add the chicken or vegetable stock, raise the heat and bring to a boil.
Remove the mushroom mixture from the heat.
Beat 1/2 cup of hot broth with the egg yolks until the mixture becomes frothy.
