Colombia-US base agreement continues to irk Chavez

Caracas, August 24: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez charged that the controversial new US deal to use Colombian military bases means US troops can move anywhere within the South American country.

“They are turning all of Colombia into a (US) base,” an outraged Chavez yesterday said in his television and radio program Alo Presidente.

“They cannot keep this a secret; the details are coming out. Gringo military staff have been authorised to operate anywhere in Colombia,” Chavez charged.

Fitter-looking Fidel Castro in first video in over a year

Havana, August 24: Cuban leader Fidel Castro, who is recovering from major intestinal surgery, appeared in the first new video of him in 14 months, joking and chatting with Venezuelan students.

Castro was yesterday shown in the video wearing a track suit and in an animated conversation with a group of law students from Venezuela’s University of Carabobo who came to visit him at his home on Saturday.

He met with them for three hours, Cuban television, which aired the video yesterday, said.

Swine flu: Toll in Spain rises to 15

Granada, August 24: A 20-year-old woman has died of swine flu in southern Spain on Sunday, raising the number of deaths from the viral disease to 15 in the country, health officials said.

The victim, a resident of Granada City in southern Spain, has died in a hospital due to complications from the influenza A (H1N1) virus, officials said.

The patient was admitted to the San Cecilio Hospital Aug 19 with high fever, cough and difficulty in breathing.

Brazil to build five submarines with France help

Sao Paulo, August 24: Brazil will build five submarines in collaboration with France to protect its vast off shore oil reserves in the Amazon region, a media report said on Sunday.

The Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper said President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has already approved the submarine project prepared by the Defence Ministry.

Brazil will also build a nuclear submarine as part of the project, it said.

Xinjiang riots: 200 to go on trial, says report

Beijing, August 24: More than 200 people are expected to go on trial this week for their involvement in sectarian riots last month that killed nearly 200 people in China’s eastern region of Xinjiang, a state-run newspaper reported on Monday.

The trials will take place in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang and the site of China’s worst ethnic violence in decades, in which an additional 1,700 people were injured, the China Daily reported. The rioting pitted Turkic-speaking Muslim Uighurs against members of China’s dominant Han ethnic group.

Malaysia frees woman on caning charge

Sungai Siput, August 24: Religious authorities in Malaysia on Monday freed a Muslim woman who had been sentenced to be caned for dinking beer, although she refused to leave a van taking her to jail when returned to her home.

And her father said the change of mind would ridicule Islam, which bans Muslims from consuming alcohol.

“The warrant cannot be executed,” Sharafuddin Zainal Ariffin, head of enforcement for the state of Pahang’s Islamic Affairs Department, told reporters after Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 32, was returned to her house.

DAHI VADA RECIPE

Ingredients:
For Wada:
1 Cup Urad daal
Salt to taste
Oil to fry
For Dahi :
1 kg Dahi (yogurt)
1/2 tsp grated Ginger
Finely chopped coriander leaves
1-2 green chilies chopped
Salt to taste
2 tsp Roasted cumin(jeera)powder
Red chili powder to taste

Preparation:
For Bada – Clean, wash and soak the daal overnight.
Grind it into smooth paste.
Add salt to taste.
Heat oil in a pan and drop a spoonfuls of batter and fry till golden brown.
Take the hot vadas and put in cold water for 2-3 minutes.
Now Take them out of water and squeeze the water and keep aside.

Recipe: Rice Chakli

A savoury snack made of rice and spices, Rice chakli can be stored over large periods of time.

Ingredients:

• 400 gms Rice flour
• 150 gms Gram flour
• 1/2 tsp Asafoetida
• 1 tbsp Til seeds
• 2 tbsp Butter
• 3 tsp Chili powder
• Salt to taste
• Oil as required

Procedure:

• Combine rice flour and gram flour with asafoetida, chili powder, butter and salt.
• Wash 1 tbsp til seeds and add them to the flour mixture.
• Pour water and knead to make soft dough.
• Heat oil in a kadhai and press bits of dough through a mould.

Anthony Hopkins falls for Indian curry

London, August 24: Oscar-winning actor Sir Anthony Hopkins has developed such a liking for Indian curry that he ordered a red-hot curry at an Indian restaurant without any rice or bread.

The movie star, 71, who played Hannibal Lecter in “Silence of the Lambs”, wolfed down the chicken vindaloo at the Spice Merchant in Cardiff Bay, here without any bread to complement it with, reports themirror.co.uk.

“We offered Sir Anthony rice and naan to help calm down the heat, but he declined. This is a sign of a true curry aficionado,” said the owner.

Naxals call for bandh in 5 states, blow up rly tracks in J’khand

Ranchi, August 24: Even as the security forces are gearing up to combat the two-day shutdown called by the Left extremists, the Maoist guerrillas on Monday blew up a stretch of railway track in the tribal-dominated Latehar district of Jharkhand.

About 20 left-wing ultras blasted the tracks between Kumundi and Hehegarha railway stations, about 150 km from Ranchi, according to Latehar Railway station master P N Tiwari.

The blast occurred on the down line disrupting the Barwadih-Barkakana route, he said.

Ministries Plan Flu Strategy for Academic Institutions

Sharjah, August 24: The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research are planning to launch an H1N1 preparedness strategy even as college and university administrations sought to allay fears over the virus ahead of the reopening of institutions in a few days.

“There will also be a joint team from both the ministries to focus on institutes for higher educational programmes,” said a member of the Technical Health Committee for Combating Swine Flu.

President Orders Release of 604 Prisoners

Abu Dhabi, August 24: President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has ordered the release of 604 prisoners on the occasion of the advent of the holy month of Ramadan.

The President also sponsored to pay the financial liabilities of these prisoners serving terms after being sentenced by competent courts in various cases.

The release of prisoners, both 
citizens and expatriates of various nationalities, comes as part of the 
President’s keenness to give them opportunities to begin a new life and alleviate the hardships of their families.

Al Boom and Co-accused Granted Bail

Dubai, August 24: The owner of Abed Al Boom Management and Development Properties, Abed Al Boom, was on Sunday granted bail by the Dubai Civil Court, but with a rider that if he misses a hearing he would face a penalty of Dh500,000.

The court also granted bail to other defendants and ordered them to hand over their passports and a guarantee deposit of Dh100,000 each.

In the bail application moved on Sunday, Al Boom’s counsel Salem Al Sha’ali pleaded that his client be released on bail because the court had not reached a verdict in 14 months.

Dubai, August 24: Rahmatalla Al Afghani has illegally entered Dubai 15 times and promises to do it again as he continues to chase the Dubai dream.

“I will not stop infiltrating Dubai. I will try to get the money which I need by all means,” the 25-year-old Afghan told Khaleej Times from jail after his most recent arrest.

“I want to have a supermarket, a villa, a luxury car in Afghanistan.”

Additional Bus Fleets for Abu Dhabi and Al Ain

Abu Dhabi, August 24: Department of Transport (DoT) has begun four new local routes in Al Ain from August 22, while 40 new buses will replace the old Chinese buses in the Capital at the
same time.

Talking to Khaleej Times, Saeed Al Hameli, general manager, public bus office, DoT, said, “A total of 30 buses will be introduced in Al Ain in the first stage. Then to support this growth in public bus services, 50 high quality buses will be operational along the initial Al Ain routes.”

Dubai-based Family Found Dead in India

Dubai, August 24: Four members of a UAE-based Indian family, who were supposed to return to Dubai on Friday, were found dead in Hyderabad, the capital of the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, on Saturday.

The bodies of K. Prasad, 40, his wife Vijayalakshmi, 37, daughter Kavitha, 11, and son Ketan, 10 were found in a lodge in Hyderabad, Indian media reported on Sunday.

Prasad, an engineer, was working with Dubai Petroleum Company and his children were schooling here. Though a human resources official at the company confirmed this, she refused to provide any further details.

Tehran, August 24: The head of an influential committee in Iran’s parliament said he believes the nominee for defense minister will be approved despite accusations he was involved in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish cultural center in Argentina, the official IRNA news agency reported on Sunday.

The backing of the foreign policy and national security committee raises the likelihood that Gen. Ahmad Vahidi will be confirmed as defense chief in a vote in the full legislature, which is expected to be held on Sept. 1.

Hours before his funeral Sunday, North Korean officials dispatched to Seoul to pay their respects to the Nobel Peace Prize winner held talks with South Korea’s president — the first high-level inter-Korean contact after many months of tension.

They relayed a message about bilateral relations from North Korean leader Kim Jong Il during a half hour of “serious and amicable” talks with President Lee Myung-bak, Lee’s spokesman said.

New Caledonia swine flu death toll rises to five

Noumea, August 24: The death toll from swine flu in New Caledonia has risen to five following the death of a 46-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man, health officials in the French Pacific territory said Monday.

Both succumbed to pneumonia brought on by A(H1N1) influenza, but neither had pre-existing health conditions that put them at greater risk from the virus, the territory’s health department said.

EU to draft new immigration policy by October

Italy, August 24: The European Union will issue new immigration policy proposals by the end of October, Sweden’s Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said on Sunday, responding to Italy’s plea for more coordinated EU action.

“We will have a first proposal from the EU with regard to distribution criteria for immigration flows among the 27 (EU member states),” Bildt said on the sidelines of a conference at the Italian seaside town of Rimini.

Tens of thousands flee raging wildfires in Greece

Athens, August 24: Greece -A raging wildfire raced down a mountain slope in Greece toward the town of Marathon on Sunday, nearing two ancient temples while despairing residents pleaded for firefighters and equipment that were nowhere to be seen.

Tens of thousands of residents of Athens’ northern suburbs evacuated their homes, fleeing in cars or on foot. Several houses were destroyed as the fire advanced across an area more than 31 miles (50 kilometers) wide.
