Appoint Special Envoy on Myanmar: HRW to Hillary

New York, September 10: A leading human rights group on Thursday asked the Obama administration to appoint a Special US Envoy on Myanmar and promptly conclude its policy review on the military ruled Asian nation.

In a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, New York-based Human Rights Watch said the United States should appoint its own special envoy on Myanmar.

The Envoy would have a direct line to the Secretary of State and specific instructions to engage in a principled way with the government in Yangon and key bilateral and multilateral actors.

Near deal on UK nuclear fuel site: Westinghouse

Tokyo, September 10: Westinghouse Electric Co, the US subsidiary of Japan’s Toshiba Corp, said on Thursday that it was close to an agreement to be the long-term operator of a British nuclear fuel manufacturing site.

Westinghouse said it was in “advanced discussions” with Britain’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) about taking on a long-term management lease for the site at Springfields near Preston.

Japan must end Afghan mission: Coalition party

Tokyo, September 10: A partner in Japan’s incoming coalition government on Thursday said it would not budge from its demand that the nation end a naval refuelling mission backing US-led military operations in Afghanistan.

The Pentagon on Wednesday urged the next government, led by the untested centre-left Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), to continue the mission in the Indian Ocean, despite its campaign promise to end it.

Yasumasa Shigeno, secretary general of the DPJ’s coalition partner the Social Democratic Party (SDP), said, “Our policy will not change.”

Israel’s anti-assimilation ads yanked over uproar

Jerusalem, September 10: An ad campaign against Jewish assimilation, co-sponsored by the Israeli government, has been yanked after outraging Jews abroad, an official said on Wednesday, laying bare the sometimes fraught relations between residents of the Jewish homeland and world Jewry.

The Hebrew-language campaign was launched by Masa, a joint venture of the quasi-governmental Jewish Agency and the Israeli government. It included newspapers ads and TV clips showing mock missing persons fliers emblazoned with Jewish-sounding names and the word “Lost”.

US for dialogue between China and Dalai Lama

Washington, September 10: The United States encourages open exchange between China and the Dalai Lama on the issue of Tibet, an Obama administration official said on Wednesday.

“We have immense respect for the Dalai Lama. He is one of the leading spiritual figures in the world, and we have always encouraged a more open exchange between China and the Dalai Lama and his followers,” State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters at his daily news briefing.

Boat capsizes in Sierra Leone, 80 children drowned

Freetown, September 10: At least 80 children were killed when the boat in which they were travelling capsized off the coast of Sierra Leone capital during a storm, media reports said.

A total of 150 people, including children were on board the vessel at the time of the accident on Wednesday. Officials said the engine of the boat stopped working before the accident.

Meanwhile, rescue officials have saved 36 people and the search was continuing for other survivors. The vessel could not be traced.

The boat was returning from the Waterloo town to Freetown.

New Zealand PM’s office firebombed

Wellington, September 10: The Auckland electorate office of New Zealand Prime Minister John Key was firebombed early on Thursday, police said.

The office in Key’s Helensville electorate in the semi-rural outskirts of the city was attacked with a Molotov cocktail, which caused a small fire in the early hours of the morning, police said.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze and damage was minor, police area commander Janet Hope said.

Key had no immediate response to the attack on the building, which was unoccupied at the time.

Iran has to opt between isolation and reintegration: US

Washington, September 10: Stepping up pressure on Iran over its controversial nuclear programme, the US on Wednesday said that Tehran will have to make a choice whether it wants isolation or reintegration with the international community.

“The (Obama) administration has made it clear to Iran and the whole international community that we have a new approach to Iran. We have made it clear to Iran that the choice really is theirs to make,” State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said.

Drug consumption not a crime: Colombian court

Bogota, September 10: Colombia’s Supreme Court ruled that possession of illegal drugs for personal use is not a criminal offence, citing a 1994 decision by the country’s Constitutional Court, Caracol Radio reports.

Drug consumption “generates in a person problems of addiction and slavery that turn one into a sick, compulsive individual deserving of therapeutic medical treatment instead of a punishment”, the judges said on Wednesday.

Patna, September 10: Security has been beefed up in seven Assembly constituencies in Bihar where bypolls would be held on Thursday.

The seven constituencies where bypolls are scheduled today are – Warisnagar, Kalyanpur, Bochaha, Chenari, Aurai, Chainpur and Ramgarh.

Additional Director General of Police (headquarters) Neelmani said that fool-proof security arrangements have been made for ensuring free, fair and peaceful elections.

Cabinet to discuss Govt stand on gay sex

New Delhi, September 10: The Union Cabinet on Thursday is likely to discuss on the suggestion of a three-member ministerial group, which does not want to oppose Delhi High Court judgement decriminalising gay sex.

The Cabinet note says that the three ministries — Home, Health and Law — have agreed to the document circulated by the Law Ministry suggesting that the judgement in the Supreme Court should not be opposed, official sources said.

They said the matter would be left to the Supreme Court to decide as it was hearing several petitions including those by religious groups.

Ties with India undergoing ‘seismic changes’, says US

Washington, September 10: The US on Wednesday said its relationship with India was undergoing “seismic changes” and will get a major boost during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit in November.

Washington also asked Pakistan to prosecute those responsible for the Mumbai terror attacks and stop infiltration of militants into India to rebuild confidence with New Delhi.

Cong-DMK ties very strong: Rahul

Chennai, September 10: Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Thursday dismissed all speculation of a rift between his party and the DMK-led by M Karunanidhi, by maintaining that ties between the two sides are very strong.

The young Congress leader also played down all resentment of not meeting M Karunannidhi, by expressing his deep regards for the DMK chief.

“There’s nothing to read out into my not meeting Mr Karunanidhi. I am a big admirer of the Tamil Nadu leader and have great respect for him,” he said.

Chennai, September 10: DMK cadres are reportedly upset over AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi not calling on party patriarch and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, a practice followed by Congress leaders during their visit to Tamil Nadu.

Gandhi is on a three-day visit to the state to attract youth to the Congress in a bid to revitalise the party in a state which is under the rule of Dravidian parties since 1967, when the Congress lost power to DMK.

Grounded arms-laden UAE plane takes off for China

Kolkata, September 10: The China-bound cargo plane of UAE’s Air Force finally took off from Kolkata airport on Thursday after being detained here for four days for carrying arms and ammunition.

The External Affairs Ministry on Wednesday had cleared the plane to leave India after it was detained since Sunday evening. The flight originated from UAE capital Abu Dhabi.

The Ministry gave green signal to the Ministry of Defence and Customs authorities, allowing the C-130 Hercules plane to leave the NSC Bose International Airport, official sources said.

Heavy rains lash Delhi, traffic jams in many areas

New Delhi, September 10: Heavy rains lashed the national capital since last night, leading to water logging in many areas and huge traffic snarls.

The city received 93.2 mm of rains since 8:30 pm last night.

The rains led to a dip in temperature with the minimum being recorded at 23.3 degree Celsius.

The heavy rains led to traffic jams in Mayur Vihar, Vasant Vihar, Munirka, Dhaula Kuan, Pragati Maidan, Moolchand, Lajat Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Bhajanpura and Nizamuudin areas.

US encourages dialogue between India & China

Washington, September 10: The United States Thursday said that it encourages dialogue between India and China to short out any issues between them.

“We encourage dialogue between India and China in working out any issues that divide them,” State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters at his daily press briefing when asked about differences between the two Asian neighbouring countries.

US Increasing Force Size in Iraq by Adding Contractors

A report by Raw Story’s John Byrne notes that despite President Obama’s pledge with withdraw troops from Iraq, the overall force size is actually increasing in recent months, as thousands of new private contractors are being brought in.

The Pentagon is spending hundreds of millions of dollars on the new contractors, mostly mercenaries from Uganda and Kenya, and its estimates involve adding significantly more contractors at the bases to cover for the US pullout. In one example, 900 contractors are to replace 400 soldiers.

Karnataka swine flu toll rises to 47

Bangalore, September 10: With three new swine flu deaths being reported in Karnataka, the death toll due to the H1N1 virus in the state reached 47, a health official said here Thursday.

A five-year-old admitted on Sep 1 died on the same day at a private hospital in Bijapur. another 40-year-old man admitted on Sep 5 died the next day, again in Bijapur. A 36-year-old man admitted on Sep 6 died the next day at a private hospital in Bagalkot.

However, the report confirming that all three tested positive for the virus was received only on Sep 9, a health official said.

Oil up for fourth day, above $71 on OPEC, stocks

Singapore, September 10: Oil prices rallied for a fourth day running on Thursday, edging above $71.50 a barrel after bullish inventory data and soothing words from OPEC whetted investor appetite for crude.

The oil producers cartel left output unchanged, as expected, with Saudi Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi saying prices were being driven by economic recovery, and that high levels of inventory had become irrelevant to the market. [ID:nL9714113]
