NCP will remain separate entity, says Bhujbal

Mumbai, September 11: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal says his party, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP, will continue to have its separate existence
though the issue of Sonia Gandhi’s foreign origins, on which it was born, is of no consequence now.

“NCP should retain its identity. Why are there so many newspapers and television news channels? The good ones will sustain. Even though ideology is the same, there can be two different parties,” Bhujbal told PTI.

Jagan gets 3 choices: DyCM, mantri, PCC

New Delhi, September 11: The Congress high command is said to have offered three choices to YSR’s son Jaganmohan Reddy as an alternative to chief
ministership.

Sources said the choices are the post of deputy CM, a position in the Union cabinet or a post in the state party. YSR aide and chief of ‘Jagan-for-CM’ campaign KVP Ramachandra Rao is scheduled to return to Hyderabad on Friday and discuss the choices with Jagan, the sources added.

US troops in Afghanistan run to remember 9-11

Kabul, September 11: U.S. troops in Afghanistan donned shorts and laced up sneakers Friday to run in memory of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, as they fight a war that was born of that day but which has seen waning public support.

More than 1,000 service members ran 9.11 kilometers (about 5 1/2 miles) at the main U.S. base to commemorate the anniversary and remember troops who have died in nearly eight-years of fighting.

US rejects Iran nuclear proposals

The US says it is unhappy with the package of proposals submitted by Iran on Wednesday aimed at breaking the deadlock over its nuclear ambitions.

Philip Crowley of the US State Department told the BBC the measures do not address the status of Iran’s nuclear programme.

The US wants Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment programme which its says could be used for nuclear weapons.

Iran says its nuclear programme is for civilian use.

Washington, September 11: Illegal immigrants in the U.S. won’t gain insurance benefits for their medical care under the health overhaul proposed by President Barack Obama.

That may not stop some uninsured and undocumented U.S. residents from getting government subsidies, Republican critics said. Current proposals lack enforcement provisions to ensure that ineligible applicants are kept from programs, causing a gap between law and practice, according to a group seeking curbs on immigration.

I am impressed with what US has done post 9/11: Chidambaram

Washington, September 11: As the US prepared to observe the eighth anniversary of the terror attacks on the World Trade Center and elsewhere, Indian Home Minister P. Chidambaram said he was “quite impressed” by what the US has done to counter terror and some of its practices can be applied to Indian cities.

Iran offers talks, but not on its nuclear program

Tehran, September 11: An Iranian proposal made public offers wide-ranging talks with the West but is silent about its nuclear program, a mixed message that may undercut any push for further UN sanctions for now.

Separately, an Iranian official ruled out any talks about Iran’s uranium enrichment program, which the West suspects may be a cover for developing nuclear weapons but which Iran says is solely intended to produce electrical power.

US lawmakers vow tough action on Iran

Washington, September 11: Top US lawmakers vowed tough action on Iran as tensions mounted ahead of a late deadline for negotiations and amid speculation Israel may launch a pre-emptive strike.

“The clock is ticking and in fact, it has almost run out,” Democratic Representative Howard Berman told Jewish leaders in comments intended to allay concerns that President Barack Obama’s administration is not doing enough to tame Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.

Czech court strikes down October election

BRNO, September 11: Czech Republic The Czech Constitutional Court scrapped a law on Thursday which allowed for an early election next month, postponing the polls probably until November.

The court upheld a complaint that the law, which cut the normal four-year term of the lower house of parliament about eight months short, was unconstitutional, court Chairman Pavel Rychetsky said.

Japan launches rocket carrying transport vehicle

Tokyo, September 11: Japan’s space agency successfully launched Friday a new unmanned rocket carrying supplies for the International Space Station.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency said the H-2B rocket — an upgrade of the country’s H-2A — took off early Friday from the space center on Tanegashima, a remote island in southern Japan. Its payload, the HTV transportation vehicle, successfully separated from the rocket about 15 minutes after liftoff, according to the agency, known as JAXA.

North Korea makes new concession to South

Pyongyang, September 11: North Korea has dropped demands that South Korean factory owners pay a huge wage increase at a joint industrial estate, officials said Friday, the latest peace overture from the communist state.

The concession came amid anger in the South over the North’s unannounced discharge of dam water on Sunday, which caused a flash flood in a cross-border river and killed six southerners.

The North is now proposing a five-percent pay rise this year for its 40,000 workers at the Kaesong estate just north of the border, Seoul’s unification ministry said.

Arctic exploration finds large underwater mountain

Washington, September 11: Joint U.S.-Canada exploration of the Arctic sea floor discovered an unusual underwater mountain and evidence that could boost the two countries’ claims that their boundaries extend farther north.

For the past two months ships from the countries have ventured north in icy areas of the Arctic where almost no surface ships have been, in an effort to find out how far the continental shelf extends.

The farther out the shelf, the more ocean floor — thought to be rich with oil and gas — that the two countries could claim.

Panic as quake jolts central Turkey

Ankara, September 11: A light earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale shook the central Turkish province of Konya on Thursday, causing panicked residents to jump out of buildings, media reports said.

The epicenter of the quake, which hit at 9:29 pm (1829 GMT), was near the town of Selcuklu, the Istanbul-based Kandilli observatory said.

There were no reports of damage, but a number of people sustained injuries when they jumped out of their windows and balconies in panic, the CNN-Turk news channel said.

World powers said unlikely to rush sanctions on Iran

United Nations, September 11: World powers meeting at the U.N. General Assembly and the G-20 gathering later this month are unlikely to push immediately for tougher sanctions on Iran, an official familiar with preparations for the meetings said on Thursday.

The United States, Russia, France, Britain, China and Germany are evaluating a package of proposals submitted by Iran on Wednesday after giving the Islamic Republic until this month to respond to their demand for talks on its nuclear program.

Bad weather forces space shuttle to skip landing

Washington, September 11: Bad weather prevented space shuttle Discovery from returning home Thursday and kept its astronauts circling the world for at least an extra day.

Mission Control skipped the first landing attempt because of wind and rain. The wind eased but the rain lingereda, then the shuttle will be diverted to Edwards. The cross-country ferry trip eats up $1.7 million and just over a week, however, which is why NASA prefers sending shuttles straight to their home port.

Discovery has enough supplies to remain in orbit until Sunday.

Britain defends journalist rescue in Afghanistan

Tehran, September 11: British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said a deadly military raid to rescue a Western journalist in Afghanistan was deemed “the only way” to secure his freedom.

New York Times reporter Stephen Farrell, who has dual British-Irish nationality, was freed unharmed. However, his Afghan colleague, father-of-two Sultan Munadi, plus a British soldier and an Afghan woman and child were killed.

US urges vigilance on 9/11 anniversary

Washington, September 11: Federal officials are telling police to be vigilant on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, though they say it is routine advice.

Friday is the eighth anniversary of the hijacked jetliner crashes that killed nearly 3,000 people in the U.S.

The FBI and Homeland Security Department sent a bulletin to law enforcement agencies nationwide Thursday evening, a copy of which was reviewed by The Associated Press. The bulletin is similar to past advisories on holidays and other significant dates, and gives no indication of any specific threat.

Two Women Robbed and Raped

Dubai, September 11: Two women were allegedly kidnapped, raped and robbed by four men, a Dubai Police officer said.

The officer, who asked not to be named, said two Moroccan women met four UAE nationals who offered to transport them after they left their workplace in a hotel.

The four men, in their early twenties, invited the 23 and 26-year-old women to have dinner in a coffee shop before taking them home.

The group stayed in the café shops until 4am and later travelled in the men’s cars.

Nucleic Acid Test on Blood Donors Helps Prevent Viral Infection

Sharjah, September 11: A pioneering technology used for early detection of contagious viral infection in blood donors has helped prevent Hepatitis B infection from five donors in the country, it was announced on Thursday.

Officials revealed the first success story of Nucleic Acid Test (NAT) to Minister of Health Dr. Hanif Hassan during his visit to the NAT lab at the Blood Transfusion and Research Services Centre in Sharjah.

The minister pointed out that safe blood transfusion service is a top priority for the UAE government.

“I never stop reading the Quran. I changed and my problems as well. However, I always find perfect answers in the Quran,” said Dr Murad Wilfried Hofmann, winner of the Islamic Personality prize, which is part of
the Dubai International Holy Quran Award.

Hofmann then said that being selected as the Islamic Personality of the year is an honour to him and to all Muslims in Europe and the West.

Ex-manager Asked for Dh386,000 Bribe: Witness

Dubai, September 11: In a case of bribe of Dh386,000 allegedly demanded by the former manager of a hotel in Dubai from a company for helping them win a tender bid, the witness told the Court of First
Instance on Wednesday that the defendant had asked for the money.

The Lebanese witness, who is employed with the same hotel, Bavaria Hotel, said that the ex-manager, a 47-year-old German, had in May 2008 asked the company for commission of about seven per cent of a Dh5.5 million deal for providing the hotel with some necessities including towels and blankets.
