SBI cuts lending rates between 0.5-3.5%

Days ahead of the RBI reviewing the interest rate, State Bank of India (SBI) on Friday announced cut in lending rates between 0.5-3.5 percent, mainly for the small and medium enterprises (SME) and the agriculture sector.

However, interest rate on home and retail loans will remain unchanged, the banking leader said, adding they are low and competitive.

Announcing the reduction in interest rate, SBI Managing Director and Group Executive (National Banking) A Krishna Kumar said the base rate will also remain unchanged at 10 percent.

Sensex rallies over 263 points, eyes 17K

The BSE benchmark Sensex recovered by over 263 points in the closing hour of trade Friday on fresh spell of buying by funds and retailers amid a strong trend in Asian markets.

The 30-share barometer, which had lost 202.63 points in yesterday’s trading on inflation concerns, rebounded by 263.01 points to 16,940.89.

All sectoral indices, led by auto and banking, rose by up to 2.43 percent.

Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty, was trading 81.45 points higher at 5,136.20.

Asian Games gold medal winning athlete Pinki Pramanik was arrested after a complaint was made that she is a male and has allegedly raped a woman, police said Thursday.

“We arrested Pramanik Thursday morning after a woman lodged a complaint of rape, stating that the athlete was a male and has been cohabiting with her for past several months. He promised to marry her but later denied,” said an officer of Baguihati police station in North 24-Parganas where the complaint was made.

Scientists find lake, ponds on Saturn’s Titan

Scientists claim to have discovered a methane-rich tropical lake and several ponds near the equator of Saturn’s largest moon Titan.

Lakes were previously spied near Titan’s polar regions. It was long thought that bodies of liquid could not exist near the tropics because they would evaporate.

“This discovery was completely unexpected because lakes are not stable at tropical latitudes,” said planetary scientist Caitlin Griffith of the University of Arizona, who led the discovery team.

The study, a meta analysis of 17 studies that looked at the risk of all-cause mortality in smokers 60 or older, found smoking cessation was linked with a 28 per cent reduction in mortality risk and its benefits were evident in all age groups including those aged 80 years and older.

Global warming causing Himalayan glacier to diminish each year

Global warming is diminishing the Chhota Shigri glacier in the Pir Panjal ranges of Himachal Pradesh at 0.67 metres a year, report French and Indian researchers.

The study, jointly supported by the Department of Science and Technology, India’s space agency ISRO and the Indo-French Centre for Promotion of Advanced Research, concluded that the glacier mass was thinning more rapidly this century.

Double-arm transplant performed in Mexico

A 52-year-old Mexican man who lost his arms in a 2011 electrical accident became the first patient in Latin America to receive a double-arm transplant.

Surgeons at Mexico City`s Salvador Zubiran National Institute of Medical Science and Nutrition performed the May 18 operation on Gabriel Granados, who was discharged Thursday after a satisfactory recovery, the Health Secretariat said.

In a statement, the hospital said the donor was a 34-year-old man who had been declared brain dead.

‘Spine manipulation for neck pain inadvisable’

Chiropractic treatment for neck pain, a common technique which involves applying thrusts to the neck area of the spine, should be abandoned as it carries a low risk of stroke, scientists have claimed.

Writing in the British Medical Journal, Neil O’Connell and colleagues from the Centre for Research and Rehabilitation at Brunel University said cervical spine manipulation may cause damage to the key neck arteries and lead to a stroke.

The technique is “unnecessary and inadvisable”, they said.
