Sandberg first woman to be named to Facebook Board

Facebook has named its Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg as a member of its Board of Directors, making her the first woman director in the eight-year-old social network company.

Facebook announced Harvard alumna Sandberg’s promotion to the eight-member board yesterday.

42-year-old Sandberg joined the social network in 2008 and oversees Facebook’s business operations including sales, marketing, business development, legal, human resources, public policy and communications.

Swine fever outbreak in West Sikkim

With three blood samples having tested positive at Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (RDDL) authorities today confirmed swine fever outbreak as the cause of high mortality among pigs in Rinchenpong, West Sikkim.

Joint Director, Animal Husbandry department [West], Dr D S Tewari said in a statement that results of three blood samples sent to RDDL, Khanapara, Assam, confirmed that it is swine fever and the department embarked on a vaccination drive in Rinchenpong constituency.

Severe reactions to food more common in kids

Children with allergies to milk and egg experience unexpectedly more severe reaction to these and other foods than previously thought, researchers claim.

A team from National Jewish Health (NJH) in the US found that more than 70 per cent of preschoolers with documented or suspected food allergies suffered a significant reaction during the three-year study period.

They also found that caregivers failed to administer the medication “epinephrine” in 70 per cent of the severe and potentially life-threatening reactions.

Rupee gains sharply by 71 paise against dollar

The rupee was trading 71 paise up at 56.44 against the dollar in a sharp recovery on fresh selling of the American currency by banks ahead of expected measures from government Monday to arrest the rupee’s decline.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has said the government will announce a slew of measures today to tackle the problems facing the economy, including the rupee depreciation, along with the Reserve Bank.

SC refuses to stay IMA doctors’ strike, issues notice

The Supreme Court Monday refused to stay the day-long nation-wide strike called by the Indian Medical Association to protest against certain reforms initiated by the Central Government in the medical field.

A bench of justices H L Gokhale and Gyan Sudha Misra, however, hoped the doctors would desist from going ahead with the proposed strike in the interest of the general public.

“We find force in the submission made by senior counsel M N Krishnamani that the strike would cause serious difficulties to the people. We expect that the doctors would not go on strike,” the bench observed.

Fernando Alonso wins European GP

Fernando Alonso of Ferrari won an incident-filled European Grand Prix on Sunday to become the first driver to win two races this season, while Michael Schumacher earned a first podium finish since his comeback by coming third.

Alonso jousted his way up from 11th on the starting grid to claim an emotional victory for the Spaniard in front of his home fans after pole sitter Sebastian Vettel’s Red Bull stalled on the track midway through the race.

‘Mars’ interior contains as much water as Earth’

Scientists claim to have found clinching evidence that suggest Mars’ interior holds vast reservoirs of water, with some spots apparently as wet as Earth’s innards.

The new findings, published in the journal Geology, upend previous studies, which had estimated that the Red Planet’s internal water stores were scanty at best — something of a surprise, given that liquid water apparently flowed on the Martian surface long ago.

“It’s been puzzling why past estimates for the planet’s interior have been so dry,” said study co-author Erik Hauri of the Carnegie Institution of Washington.

ISRO mulling hiving off satellite production to industry

Rapid sea ice melting in Antarctica threatens the lives of Emperor penguins, and if global temperatures continue to rise, the largest sea birds may eventually disappear, a new study has claimed.

Peaches, plums help fight obesity, diabetes

Peaches and plums have bioactive compounds that can fight off obesity-related diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, says a new study.

The study showed that the compounds in such fruits could be a weapon against “metabolic syndrome”, in which obesity and inflammation lead to serious health issues, according to Luis Cisneros-Zevallos, Texas AgriLife Research food scientist.

“In recent years, obesity has become a major concern in society due to the health problems associated to it,” said Cisneros-Zevallos, also associate professor at Texas A&M University.

Scientists pinpoint brain receptor linked with rage

Scientists have identified a brain receptor, an enzyme monoamine oxidase A, whose malfunctioning can trigger sudden violence, explosive outbursts and hostile overreaction to stress in mice.

By blocking the receptor, which also exists in humans, scientists stripped the mice of their extreme aggressiveness, potentially paving the way to new treatment for severely aggressive behaviour.

Night shift elevates breast cancer risk

Women who did night shifts had a higher risk of developing breast cancer, as compared to sisters who worked in daytime, according to a study.

“Our work has corroborated the results of previous studies and poses the problem of taking night work into consideration in public health management, especially since the number of women working a typical hours is on the increase,” states Pascal Guenel, of Inserm (Institut National de la Sante et de la Recherche Medicale), who led the study.

Autonomy of IITs will remain intact: PM to Federation

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday gave an assurance that the autonomy of IITs will remain “intact”, the IIT faculty federation, opposing the proposed common entrance to these institutes, said after meeting him.

“We explained each of our points to him (PM). He has told us he

will talk to HRD minister and assured that the autonomy of the IITs will remain intact,” secretary of All India IIT Faculty Federation (AIIITFF) AK Mittal told reporters after the federation met Singh.

UK school bans skirts for girls

A British school has banned girls from wearing skirts to fight the “over-sexualisation” of children.

Instead, from September, students at Moulton School and Science College in Northamptonshire will be forced to wear black tailored trousers.

Head teacher Trevor Jones said he has taken the radical decision in order to fight the “over-sexualisation” of children.

If they fail to obey the new rule, pupils will be given second-hand clothing to wear for the day or sent home to get changed, the Daily Mail reported.
