India extends ban on LTTE

The government has extended the ban on LTTE declaring that it continues to adopt a strong anti-India posture and pose a grave threat to the security of its citizens.

In a notification, the Home Ministry said the activities of LTTE are detrimental to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India and there is a continuing strong need to control all such separatist activities by all possible means.

Trinamool Congress still silent on Vice President

Hours before UPA meet on Vice Presidential election Saturday, Railway Minister Mukul Roy said the Trinamool Congress will clarify its stand “at an appropriate moment”.

“Our party will speak at an appropriate moment… There is no need for an individual to speak,” said Roy.

Alzheimer`s signs appear 25 yrs before onset of disease: Study

Alzheimer’s- related changes begin to appear up to 25 years before the expected onset of the disease, a new study has claimed that may help pave way for early diagnosis and treatment of the brain disorder.

A team of scientists from Washington University School of Medicine studied 128 participants who had 50% chance of inheriting the disease.

The scientist suggested that the earliest sign of the changes, a drop in spinal fluid levels of the key ingredient of Alzheimer`s brain plaques, can be detected 25 years before the anticipated age of the disease’s onset.

Breast fed kids to develop nut allergies

Children breast fed for the first six months of their birth are 1.5 times more likely to develop a nut allergy than those exposed to other foods and fluids, says a study.

A joint project between the Australian National University (ANU) Medical School and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Health Directorate investigated a link between breast feeding and nut allergies.

Parents were asked to report if the child had a nut allergy, and on feeding habits in the first six months of life.

Over 400,000 Yahoo passwords leaked: Report

US-based Internet firm Yahoo has become the latest target for hackers as passwords of more than 453,000 site users have been compromised and posted online, reports claimed on Thursday.

The compromised server was part of “Yahoo!! Voice”, which was earlier known as Associated Content, a security firm has claimed.

The security firm also says that the passwords appear to have been obtained using a SQL injection attack to extract the information from Yahoo’s database servers.

Now, Suresh Kalmadi wants to attend 2012 Olympics; moves court

Sacked CWG Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi, accused in a games-related graft case, on Thursday sought a Delhi court`s permission to attend the 2012 Olympics in London.

In his plea to Special CBI Judge Talwant Singh, Kalmadi said he is a member of International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) Council and sought permission to go to the United Kingdom for the games from July 26 to August 13.

TCS net profit up 37.39% to Rs 3,317.68 crore

Country’s largest software firm Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on Thursday reported a 37.39 percent jump in consolidated net profit at Rs 3,317.68 crore for the first three months of this financial year.

The company’s revenues rose 37.71 percent to Rs 14,868.71 crore in the first quarter of 2012-13 from Rs 10,797.02 crore in the year-ago period, TCS said in a filing to BSE.

The company had posted a net profit of Rs 2,414.76 crore for the same quarter of the previous fiscal (2011-12).

May Industrial growth at 2.4%; April IIP revised to 0.9%

Pulled down by contraction in the capital goods and mining sectors, industrial production recorded a dismal growth of 2.4 percent in May – slightly better than (-)0.9 percent in April – and may prompt the Reserve Bank to cut interest rates to boost growth.

“The IIP numbers remain weak but are better than previous month. Such growth rates, however, are not acceptable,” Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said while commenting on the industrial production data.

Zardari gives consent to Contempt of Court Bill

Pakistan President on Thursday signed into law a bill aimed at giving blanket immunity to top government leaders from contempt of court proceedings and countering the Supreme Court’s efforts to pressure the Premier to revive graft cases against Asif Ali Zardari.

Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said Zardari gave his assent to the Contempt of Court Bill of 2012 after it was passed by the Senate and the National Assembly, the two houses of Parliament.

Olympics pose challenge to UK spies: Panel

Britain’s intelligence and security committee says the country’s spy agencies are under strain as they face a critical challenge from the London Olympics.

The panel of nine lawmakers said on Thursday in its annual report that domestic spy service MI5 had come under “significant pressure” as it attempts to neutralise threats from al Qaeda linked groups or Irish Republican dissidents and take on a key role in security checks for Olympic accreditations.

Chairman Malcolm Rifkind says the committee believes al Qaeda and affiliates continue to threaten Britain.

Tajikistan asks Russia $250 mn in rent for military base

Tajikistan wants Moscow to pay at least $250 million a year for the Russian military base deployed in the Central Asian state, Kommersant business daily reported Thursday, citing an unnamed Tajik source.

The Russian military base in Tajikistan was opened in 2004 and is Russia’s largest base for ground forces abroad with up to 7,000 military servicemen stationed there. The base’s presence in Tajikistan expires in 2014, according to existing agreements.

SM Krishna’s visit dates yet to be finalised: Khar

Pakistan on Thursday said it was in the process of “confirming” new dates for the much-anticipated visit of External Affairs Minister SM Krishna to Islamabad and hoped the two countries will be able to achieve “some milestones” during his trip.

India has proposed September 7-9 as possible dates for Krishna’s visit to Pakistan after he had to defer his earlier scheduled July 18-19 trip due to the Presidential elections and upcoming session of Parliament.

`One mn Afghans suffer from drug addiction`

More than one million Afghans, aged 15 to 64, are suffering from drug addiction, an official said Wednesday.

The causes of drug addiction are poverty, illiteracy, conflicts, migrations, illusions about drugs and unemployment, Xinhua quoted Mohammad Tahir Sultani, head of a drug addicts` hospital, as saying.

He was speaking to reporters following the launch of a campaign against drug use by the Afghan ministries of public health, counter-narcotics and interior affairs.

Public smoking 16 times more polluting: Study

If you stand next to someone smoking at a bus stop, there are fair chances that you`ll be exposed to fine particulate pollution nearly 16 times higher than the background level, says a study.

The study conducted by the University of Otago, New Zealand, has found that smoking on city street footpaths increases the amount of dangerous fine particulates many times in the air.

The five-week-long study used a sensitive air monitor to measure air quality at a shopping centre as they passed 284 people who were smoking on the footpaths, the journal Health & Place reports.
