With the Indian Censor Board axing every reasonable scene from movies these days, it seems that Indian cinema still has a long way to go before it matches up Hollywood standards. And Madhur Bhandarkar’s upcoming flick ‘Heroine’ is a good testimony to that fact.
It has been heard that Kareena Kapoor who is playing the lead in Madhur’s movie has shot some sequences that show her smoking. However, the Censor Board has intervened to cut off the smoking scenes as well as the lovemaking scenes and expletives from the trailers which is scheduled to release on 25 July.

Govt approves SAIL divestment through auction; may fetch Rs 4Kcrore

The government has approved disinvestment of 10.82 percent stake in Steel Authority of India (SAIL) through auction route.

“The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the disinvestment of 10.82 percent equity of SAIL out of Government of India shareholding of 85.82 percent through an Offer of Sale of shares through stock exchanges…,” an official release said Friday.

The stake dilution is likely to fetch the exchequer in excess of Rs 4,000 crore, as per the current share price of the company in the domestic bourses.

Car dispatch resume at Maruti’s Manesar plant

Amid heavy police deployment, dispatch of cars from Maruti Suzuki’s plant here resumed Friday even as production facilities remained closed after the violent incident on Wednesday that killed a senior company official.

Gurgaon Police Commissioner K K Sindhu today visited the plant here and reviewed the security situation. He, however, did not brief the media.

Pak Taliban threatens to continue attacks on security forces

Pakistani Taliban militants based in Afghanistan have threatened to continue attacks on Pakistani security forces and government installations from sanctuaries in Kunar and Nuristan provinces, according to a media report on Friday.

“We don’t care if the (Hamid) Karzai government or NATO forces decide to launch an operation against us in Kunar and Nuristan as this region has never been in control of the Afghan government and foreign forces,” said Sairajuddin Ahmed, spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban led by Mullah Fazlullah.

US House votes to cut aid to ‘traitor’ Pak by $650 mn

In the latest jab at Pakistan, the US House of Representatives has unanimously voted to cut military aid to it by a whopping USD 650 million, with a top Republican lawmaker calling the country “Benedict Arnold”, the most well-known traitor in American history.

The amendment to cut the aid, which was proposed by Republican Congressman Ted Poe, passed on the floor of the House with a voice vote.

Poe had demanded a USD 1.3 billion cut, but settled for the USD 650 million cut. The measure will now go to Senate for approval.

US Navy chopper crashes near Oman

A US Navy helicopter crashed near Oman Thursday with five crew members on board.

The chopper was conducting “heavy lift support operations” at the time of the crash, some 90 km from Muscat, Xinhua reported. The fate of the crew was not immediately known.

Mexico: 17 held in summer camp attack

Seventeen suspects have been arrested for a brutal attack on a Mexican summer camp in which two young women and three girls were raped.

The attorney general of the central state of Mexico, Alfredo Castillo, said at a press conference that a police officer, a policeman in the central city of Chalco and a former soldier were among the 15 men and two women arrested.

All of the suspects were arrested Wednesday in the small central town of Santa Maria Huexoculco, part of the Chalco municipality, while authorities were still searching for four other members of the gang.

Around 1.25 lakh Haj pilgrims to be covered under govt subsidy

Around 1.25 lakh Haj pilgrims will be covered this year under the subsidy scheme of the government, which also decided to go for competitive bidding for airlines to negotiate fares.

The pilgrims will have to pay Rs.20,000 as air fare this time, which is Rs 4000 more than that last year. Besides one of 21 embarkation points –Patna– has been replaced by Gaya this time due to certain technical difficulties.

The proposals were approved at a meeting of the Union Cabinet yesterday. The Haj flights would start on September 17.

SpiceJet staff insulted me for being Muslim, says ex Army Major

A former Major-rank officer has alleged that he was discriminated against and harassed by the staff of SpiceJet because of his being a Muslim, a charge denied by the airline which said a “religious colour” was being given to an incident.

Major Mohammad Ali Shah, who served in Indian Army as a Short Service Commissioned officer, has complained to the National Minority Commission (NCM), which is probing the matter.

“I was singled out on account of my religion and subjected to humiliation at the hands of the employees of SpiceJet including being insulted and manhandled,” Ali said.

Will get to bottom of HSBC staff violating safety norms: Govt

India on Thursday said it will “get to the bottom” of the alleged violation of safety compliance by HSBC’s staff in the country against money laundering and terrorist financing as it was “serious” matter.

New Delhi also said it would seek more information from Washington on the probe by the US Senate’s Permanent Sub-committee on Investigations which found that HSBC’s Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Compliance Department, that included employees in India, was highly inadequately staffed.

Maruti Suzuki tanks 9%; m-cap erodes by Rs 3,183 crore

Shares of Maruti Suzuki India on Thursday tanked over 9 percent, eroding as much as Rs 3,183 crore from its market capitalisation in just a single trading session after production at its Manesar plant was affected following violence between workers and the management.

The stock closed at Rs 1,117.35, down 8.74 percent over its previous closing price on the BSE.

In just a single trading session market capitalisation of the company got eroded by Rs 3,183 crore, at Rs 32,188 crore from Rs 35,371 crore on Wednesday.

Pak PM on visit to Afghanistan

Pakistan Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf today left for a day-long visit to Kabul, where he will participate in a trilateral meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and British premier David Cameron to discuss the peace process in Afghanistan.

Ashraf, who was accompanied by Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, Interior Ministry chief Rehman Malik, said he would raise the issue of cross-border attacks from Afghanistan on Pakistan with the Afghan leadership.

‘Putin, Obama did not discuss refuge for Assad’

The possibility of Moscow providing asylum for embattled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was not discussed during a conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Barack Obama, a Kremlin official said on Thursday.

“They did not discuss any destination,” Putin aide Yury Ushakov said.

The two Presidents spoke on Wednesday, just hours after the death of Syria’s defence minister in a suicide bombing in Damascus.

Ushakov also said the issue was not touched on in a meeting on Wednesday between Putin and Turkish Prime Minster Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
