Broccoli can suppress breast cancer growth: Study

A key component found in broccoli sprouts can help fight breast cancer, a new study has claimed.

Researchers from the Oregon State University in the US have found that a key component of broccoli sprouts -sulforaphane- can help suppress breast cancer proliferation and growth, an Australian daily reported.

Sulforaphane acts through DNA methylation, a biochemical process that is important for normal development in higher organisms.

Kofta Curry Recipe

Ingredients:

1 kg mutton, boneless
2 pyaj
oil (tel) for frying
6 green chilies finely cut
2 1/2 tblsp besan roasted
salt (namak) to taste
1 egg
1 tsp red chili powder
2 inch piece ginger (adrak) finely cut
for the curry
2 tsps. coriander leaves (dhania patta)
1 tsp haldi powder
3 pyaj
1 tsp garam masala
3-5 garlic (lasan)
1 cup. tomatoes, boiled & skinned
salt (namak) to taste
1 1/2″ ginger (adrak)
1 tsp red chili powder

How to make kofta curry:
To make the koftas, grind the meat with all the other ingredients.
Make small balls with this mixture.

Assure Indian community of safety: Krishna to US

External Affairs Minister SM Krishna on Tuesday said he had spoken to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and conveyed to her India’s concerns over the killing of six people in a gurdwara in Wisconsin. He also told her that the US needed to assure the Indian community that it will be safe.

Krishna spoke to Clinton late on Monday.

“I had a chance to talk to Secretary Clinton who is touring South Africa. I have conveyed our concerns about the attack and loss of very precious life in this heinous crime against place of religious worship,” Krishna told reporters.

Romney’s tax plan is Robin Hood in reverse: Obama

Launching a new attack against his Republican rival Mitt Romney, US President Barack Obama has termed his tax plan as “Robin Hood in reverse”, saying it would take money from the poor to help the rich.

“It’s like Robin Hood in reverse. It’s Romney Hood,” Obama said at a campaign event in Connecticut, amidst a round of applause from the crowd.

Obama argued that the entire centerpiece of Romney’s economic plan is a new USD 5 trillion tax cut.

“We have known for a while that a lot of this tax cut would go to the wealthiest 1 per cent of all households,” he said.

US mosque gutted in fire in a suspected arson attack

A day after the tragic shooting incident at a Gurdwara, a mosque in the US was burned to the ground for the second time in little more than a month in a suspected arson attack.

The FBI said the Islamic Centre of Joplin in Missouri was gutted down to the ground yesterday. The center was vacant at the time of the fire and no individuals sustained any injuries.

UN chief hails Sudan, South Sudan oil deal

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed the deal reached by the governments of Sudan and South Sudan overn oil and financial arrangements, Xinhua reported.

The oil dispute between Sudan and South Sudan began five months after South Sudan separated from Sudan last July, as Sudan decided to deduct its oil fees in arrears on the part of South Sudan in the form of crude oil.

While most of the oil wells are located in South Sudan, the pipelines and ports to export the oil are in Sudan.

Chinese daily criticises US for Gurdwara shooting

A state-run Chinese daily Tuesday criticised America for the deadly shooting at a gurdwara, saying that despite having the most advanced defence ability, “the US government cannot prevent its citizens from falling victim to domestic gun crime”.

An article in the Op-Ed section of the Global times stressed that repeated incidents also offer lessons to developing countries, which tend to model their social governance on developed states.

The holding of free and fair elections to strengthen Parliament is the only way forward to overcome the challenges facing Pakistan, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has said against the backdrop of a standoff between his government and the judiciary.

“The media and judiciary have become independent and now it is time to give the same status to parliament. I strongly believe that the next general election to be held under a fully independent election commission will strengthen democracy,” Ashraf said.

FAO lowers paddy forecast after poor monsoon in India

United Nation’s body FAO has revised global paddy production forecast downwards by 7.8 million tonnes to 724.5 million tonnes for 2012 mainly on account of poor monsoon rains in India.

Earlier in April, Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) had pegged global paddy production at 732.3 million tonnes for the current year. World paddy production in 2011 is pegged at 713 million tonnes (about 476 million tonnes on milled basis).

Govt to move Supreme Court for extension of auction deadline

The Empowered Group of Ministers on telecom on Tuesday decided to approach the Supreme Court to seek the extension of August 31 deadline to complete auction of 2G airwaves.

“Auctioneer has given us schedule…We will approach the Supreme Court to place before them the fact what government has done. Also, place before them that in terms of this schedule, it is not possible to conduct auction by August 31,” Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal told reporters after EGoM meet.

Govt forms new panel for forest clearances

The Environment Ministry has constituted a new advisory panel to vet proposals related to forest clearances, according to a government official.

The Forest Advisory Committee (FAC), which has been formed after two months of expiry of the last panel on May 28, will soon hold its first meeting to clear 30-35 pending cases.

“The FAC has been set up with seven members. The minister has approved the names of three independent members,” a senior Environment Ministry official told PTI.

David Plouffe was paid for two speeches he made in Nigeria in December 2010, about a month before he joined the White House staff, by a subsidiary of MTN Group, a South Africa-based telecommunications company, The Washington Post reported.

A staggering 40 million of Pakistan’s 84.3 million voters are aged between 18 and 35 and have the “potential to change the country’s political landscape”, said a leading daily.

An editorial in the Dawn Monday cited Election Commission’s data that showed in the upcoming elections, “the votes of the young will matter and will have the potential to change the country’s political landscape”.

That is, of course, if the youth go out and vote, it added.

Pak govt to seek review of contempt law annulment

The Pakistan government has decided to file petitions in the Supreme Court seeking a review of the annulment of a new law aimed at preventing the premier’s disqualification and another order on reopening graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.

Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar confirmed that the government will file a petition seeking a review of the apex court’s order that struck down the Contempt of Court Act of 2012.

“We will file a review petition in the court against this decision,” he said.

RIL surges about 6 %; pushes up Sensex by 223 pts

RIL shares surged about 6 percent on Monday to over 4-month high, pushing up the Sensex by over 223 points amid reports that a government panel has convened a meeting on clearing the company’s KG-D6 annual investment plans that have been pending for two years.

RIL’s counter opened on a bullish note and as the trade progressed it rallied 5.66 percent to an over 4-month high of Rs 785 on the BSE.

At the NSE, the stock soared 5.85 percent to Rs 786.

In terms of volume, 6.94 lakh shares of RIL were traded on the BSE, while more than 43 lakh shares changed hands on the NSE.

‘Real estate, election campaigns routing black money’

Money generated through illegal means is laundered through various means, including real estate and election campaigns, in India, a report of the US State Department has said.

“High-level corruption both generates and conceals criminal proceeds. Illicit funds are often laundered through real estate, educational programs, charities, and election campaigns. Companies use trade-based money laundering to evade capital controls,” the International Narcotics Control Strategy Report 2012 has said.

A string of tweets on behalf of US space agency Nasa’s rover Curiosity tracks the tense moments before the spacecraft landed on Mars.

“I’m safely on the surface of Mars. GALE CRATER I AM IN YOU!!!,” said an ecstatic tweet after the rover landed safely on Mars.

Moments earlier, another tweet said: “Backshell separation. It’s just you & me now, descent stage. Engage all retrorockets!”

The critical tweets began with the one saying: “Guided entry is begun. Here I go!”.
