Govt will ensure stable tax regime: Chidambaram

Confident of meeting direct tax collection target for the current fiscal, the Finance Minister P Chidambaram Monday said the government will ensure stable tax regime and non-adversarial approach in revenue collection.

“We will ensure there is a stable tax regime, there are stable tax laws and everybody adopts a non-adversarial approach to tax collection,” he said after addressing Chief Commissioners and Directors General of Income Tax.

India lifted the Nehru Cup for the third consecutive time beating Cameroon 5-4 in a penalty shootout at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here Sunday.

PIB launches mobile version of website to help cellphone users

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has launched a mobile version of its website to help cellphone users seamlessly access information on the move.

“The URL of the mobile website is pib.Gov.In/mobile. Mobile users who want the full functionality and display of the regular website can access it through the URL pib.Gov.In,” a PIB official said.

The new site has been customised to display latest press releases on the home screen and offers links to other matters on the website, he said.

‘Ironical that Bose did not get Nobel Prize’

India is like the “historic father” of the Higgs boson project, the search for what could be the basic building block of the cosmos, says CERN chief Rolf-Dieter Heuer, ruing that Indian scientist Satyendra Nath Bose, from whose surname the word ‘boson’ is derived, did not get the Nobel Prize.

“India is like a historic father of the project. I am really very impressed seeing the immense talent pool that the country has,” the director general of CERN (European Organisation for Nuclear Research), the world’s premier particle physics laboratory.

New technique can extend life of hip replacements

Scottish researchers have developed a new technique which they claim could pave the way for hip replacements that last a lifetime.

Researchers from Glasgow`s Southern General Hospital are developing prototypes of a new system that aims at combating problems of the body forming soft tissues around hip replacements.

The new technique coats key surfaces with a “nanopattern” pitted plastic to encourage stem cells to form bone in contact with the new joint, the BBC News reported.

Usually, a hip replacement needs to be changed every 15 years.

Women exposed to PFCs have obese babies

Pregnant women who are exposed to common environmental chemicals, especially polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs), have smaller babies at birth but larger at 20 months, according to an Emory University study.

PFCs, used in the production of fluoropolymers, are found widely in protective coatings of packaging products, clothes, furniture and non-stick cookware. They are persistent compounds found abundantly in the environment.

PFCs have been detected in human sera, breast milk and cord blood.

SC partially lifts ban on iron mining in Karnataka

In partial relief to the mining industry in Karnataka, the Supreme Court on Monday lifted the ban on iron ore in three districts of the state.

The apex court lifted the ban in A category mines in Bellary, Tumkur and Chitradurga districts after the court appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) recommended that mining leases, consisting of 21 operational and 24 non-operational, be allowed to carry out mining operations.

Missing Rajasthan girl found, raped by abductors for 2 months

A girl from Alwar village in Rajasthan, who had been missing for past two months, has been found and was allegedly repeatedly raped and tortured by her two abductors, police said on Saturday.

The girl was abducted on June 23 by two youths from her village soon after she arrived here with a group of women for pilgrimage at Govardhan, they said.

FIIs invest about 11K cr in Aug, highest in 6 mths

The BSE 30- scrip index, Sensex, fell about 2 percent during the trading week ended on Friday.

ONGC’s market cap slipped Rs 9,369 crore to Rs 2,36,259 crore. The company’s share price declined 3.81 percent during the week.

Have called off talks with Pak govt: Taliban commander

Senior Pakistani Taliban commander Maulvi Faqir has said that his faction has called off talks with the government for “playing tricks” with the militants.

“The government contacted me and some other Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan leaders through intermediaries several times but the contacts were suspended because government officials were not serious,” Faqir told PTI by phone from an undisclosed location.

“The Pakistani government is not independent in taking decisions as it is under US pressure. No one can refuse talks but the government has always tricked us,” he said.

‘Sectarian violence might break Pakistan’

Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain on Saturday expressed serious concern over the ongoing sectarian violence in the country, warning that it could lead to the breakup of Pakistan.

“If people are not provided protection, Pakistan will break into pieces. Christian, Barelvis, and Shias’ will demand a separate state for themselves,” warned London-based Hussain.

His comments came at a conference organised to promote harmony between different sects of Islam and other faiths.

‘US special forces suspend training of Afghans’

In the wake of increasing insider attacks on NATO soldiers in Afghanistan, the commander of US special forces has suspended training for all new Afghan recruits until probe into their ties to insurgents is completed.

“We have a very good vetting process,” a senior Special Operations official told The Washington Post. “What we learnt is that you just can’t take it for granted. We probably should have had a mechanism to follow up with recruits from the beginning.”

Saha Institute to take up boson naming case with CERN

Bengal dengue toll goes up to 3, confirmed cases 638

With the death of an 11-year-old boy in Kolkata, the dengue epidemic has claimed its third victim in the state, the health department said Saturday. The number of confirmed cases has gone up to 638.

“An 11-year-old boy has died of dengue in B.C. Roy Child hospital Saturday. The total toll of dengue deaths in the state is three. The number of confirmed dengue cases in West Bengal has gone up to 638,” said a health department statement.

Nine-year old Sreeja Das was the first dengue victim in the state.

The epidemic first struck in the second week of August.

2 patients may have got HIV after taking blood: Odisha govt

Odisha government today did not rule out possibility of two persons being infected with the HIV after taking blood from state run blood banks.

“The state government is aware of the allegation of two persons being infected with HIV after taking blood from blood banks. One cannot rule out the possibility of infection due to use of contaminated needle at private hospital also,” Health Minister Damodar Rout said in the assembly.
