Anti-Islam film protests: US orders staff to leave Sudan, Tunisia

The US State Department has ordered “non-essential staff” to leave Sudan and Tunisia where anti-American protests have broken out over a film that allegedly insults Islam, a top official said.

“Given the security situation in Tunis and Khartoum, the State Department has ordered the departure of all family members and non-emergency personnel from both posts, and issued parallel travel warnings to American citizens,” Xinhua quoted State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland as saying.

Egypt clears protesters from US embassy area

Egyptian police Saturday cleared out protesters who have been clashing with security forces for the past four days near the US Embassy as most cities around the Muslim world reported calm a day after at least six people were killed in a wave of angry protests over a film deemed offensive to Islam.

Security forces erected a concrete wall blocking the main street leading to the embassy in Cairo after finally dispersing several hundred youths who had been battling with police, trying to get to the building.

They also cleared nearby Tahrir Square where protests were being held.

Mentally ill can now become MPs in Britain

British lawmakers have unanimously voted to end “discrimination” against people suffering from mental illness, who will now be able to serve as members of Parliament, in juries and as company directors.

In a rare private members bill backed by the House of Commons, the practice of barring those who have suffered from severe mental health issues from serving on juries or as company directors has been repealed, the Telegraph newspaper reported.

MPs who have been institutionalised for psychiatric reasons for more than six months will no longer be forced to stand down from Parliament.

‘Missing’ Chinese Vice Prez to attend ASEAN meet

Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, who has “resurfaced” after disappearing from public view since Sep 1, will attend “some other important activities” at an ASEAN expo later this month.

The Ninth China-ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Expo will be held Sep 21- 25 in Nanning, capital of south China’s Guangxi Zhuang region, Xinhua reported Sunday.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei Sunday said Vice President Xi will attend the opening ceremony and “some other important activities”.

Four NATO soldiers killed in Afghan insider attack

An Afghan local policeman killed four soldiers with the NATO military coalition in southern Afghanistan, the latest in a surge of insider attacks that are fracturing trust between Afghan forces and their international partners.

The shooting came a day after insurgents in the same region stormed a sprawling British base, killing two US Marines and wounding several other international troops in an attack inspired by a film deemed offensive to Islam and the presence on the compound of a high-profile target, Britain’s Prince Harry.

Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Sunday said the coal issue will soon fade away from public memory as happened in case of Bofors.

“Earlier the Bofors was a talking point. People forgot about it. Now it is coal. This too will be forgotten,” Shinde said in a lighter vein at a function here.

President rues no Indian varsity in world’s top 200

Expressing concern that no Indian university featured among the top 200 global institutions, President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday urged the country’s premier educational institutes to step up efforts to join the league of the best.

“I must convey my sense of dismay on seeing a recent report that not a single Indian university, including the premier Indian Institutes of Technologies (IITs), featuring in the 200 top-rated universities in the world,” said Mukherjee in his address at the 58th annual convocation of IIT-Kharagpur.

Overcome India’s economic difficulties collectively: President

Asserting that one should not feel “despondent” and “disappointed” at the current difficulties before the Indian economy, President Pranab Mukherjee Saturday called for collective efforts to overcome the problems and convert them into advantages.

“It is true we are passing through difficult times. But I do not feel we should feel despondent and disappointed. Rather we should try to overcome the difficulties by our collective efforts,” Mukherjee said at a felicitation organised for him by six chambers of commerce here.

Subhash Chandra Bose was 1st Bengali President of India: Pranab

President Pranab Mukherjee Saturday described great nationalist leader Subhash Chandra Bose as the “first Bengali Rashtrapati” of India.

“Before Independence, the presidents of Indian National Congress were called Rashtrapati (president). So Netaji was the first Bengali President,” Mukherjee said during his visit to Netaji’s residence in Kolkata.

Mukherjee’s comments came after former MP Krisha Bose, the widow of Netaji’s nephew Sisir Bose, said the second Rashtrapati from Bengal has visited the historic house to pay homage to the first Rashtrapati.

Centre can’t be compelled to pay for NGO-run schools: HC

The Delhi High Court has ruled that the Central government cannot be compelled to release grant-in-aid to a school, run by an NGO for differently-abled kids, for paying salary to its staff at par with their colleagues at government institutions.

A bench headed by Acting Chief Justice AK Sikri reversed an order of a single judge asking the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to release funds to NGO Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) for paying salary to teachers and others at Asha school, meant for differently-abled kids of army personnel, at par with the government employees.

Changing climate, global warming, growing concrete jungles, depleting greenery and most of all mobile towers dotting the skyline of urban and rural areas are seen as plausible causes for decline of sparrows across the country.

Naturalists, conversationists, nature lovers and bird experts were concerned at the declining number of the friendly species of birds, said noted ornithologist Amarjit Gupta.

Gupta pointed out that the greatest danger to the environment was posed by the mobile towers erected atop buildings as the radiation released from them was affecting the avian creatures.

Ozone layer recovery to take 40 years: Experts

The ozone layer outside the Polar regions will take 40 years to recover to its pre-1980 levels, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said Friday.

Over the past decade, stratospheric ozone in the Arctic and Antarctic regions as well as globally is no longer decreasing, but it has not yet started to recover either, Xinhua quoted senior scientific officer of WMO, Geir Braathen as saying.

The ozone layer over the Antarctic is expected to recover much later.

Popular TV actor Karan Wahi is out of the top five contestant line-up on celebrity dance reality show ‘Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa 5’ as he was eliminated Saturday night.

Karan and his partner Mohina scored a perfect 30 with their powerpacked performance last week. However, audience votes weren`t in their favour this time.

Mamata likely to withdraw ministers from UPA

Furious over the government’s reform measures including FDI in retail and diesel price hike, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress’ supremo Mamata Banerjee might withdraw her ministers from UPA-II and provide support from outside, reports said Sunday.

Mamata yesterday set a 72-hour deadline, demanding the withdrawal of diesel price hike, capping of supply of subsidised LPG cylinders and the FDI in retail.

The government is however firm on its decisions, ruling out a roll back. The Prime Minister has even appealed to the nation to support the reform measures.

India’s Virat Kohli was on Saturday named the ODI Cricketer of the Year at the ICC annual awards function.

Kohli won the award for his consistent performance over the last 12 months during which he amassed runs all over the world and against almost all the countries India played.

During the last one year, Kohli played 31 ODIs and scored 1733 runs at an outstanding average of 66.65, including eight hundreds and six half-centuries.

His highest score was 183, against Pakistan in the Asia Cup.

‘FDI meant to divert attention from coal saga’

BJP leader LK Advani Saturday said the government decision to approve FDI in multi-brand retail and other sectors was aimed at diverting attention from the alleged coal scam.

“That on a day when the Supreme Court put six pertinent questions to the government about this coal scandal, the government should have decided to announce FDI in multi-brand retail may be regarded by some as a desperate bid to shift the focus of debate from corruption to ‘reforms’,” he said in his blog.

“If the government really thinks (it can succeed), it is gravely mistaken,” he added.

UN concerned over attacks on Western embassies

The UNSC has expressed deep concern over a series of attacks against Western embassies across the Arab world over a film deemed offensive to Islam, even as a top UN official asked people not to give publicity to the “malicious and deliberately provocative” movie.

In a press statement, the 15-nation Security Council condemned in the “strongest terms” the violent attacks on embassies and consular premises in Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and other countries that have left several people dead.

EU condemns attacks on German, British embassies

The European Union (EU) Friday condemned the attacks against German and British embassies in Khartoum.

“We condemn it in the strongest terms. This is unacceptable, and it is against all the rules of the civilized world. Nothing justifies these kinds of attacks,” Xinhua quoted European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso as saying.

Thousands of Sudanese protesters stormed the embassies of Germany and Britain in the Sudanese capital Friday, in protest against an anti-Islam film.

Google rejects taking anti-Muslim film off the web

In spite of the widespread violence fuming in the Muslim world over an anti-Islam film, Google on Saturday rejected a request by US officials to take the movie clips on YouTube, off the web.

The 14 minutes movie clip named “Innocence of Islam” that projects Prophet Muhammad as a fraud and philanderer, is being deemed highly objectionable by the Muslims across the world, resulting in intensely violent protests against Western Embassies.

Rallies in Pakistan condemn anti-Islam movie

Pakistanis on Friday staged rallies in the capital Islamabad and other major cities to condemn a US movie on Prophet Mohammad, Xinhua reported.

The demonstrations ended peacefully and no violence took place.

Paramilitary soldiers and anti-riot police stopped demonstrators in Islamabad who wanted to march towards the US embassy. The demonstration was organised by Shia group Wahdat-e-Muslimeen.

Group leader Maulana Amin Shaheedi asked the Pakistan government to break diplomatic relations with the US.

Pak factory fire: Owners get bail; Sindh min resigns

Days after a major fire in a garment factory here claimed 289 lives, three of its owners facing murder charges were granted protective bail till September 21 by a Pakistani court today, even as the provincial Industries and Commerce Minister resigned over the tragedy.

Abdul Aziz Bhaila and his sons Arshad and Shahid were granted bail by the Sindh High Court’s circuit bench in Larkana for Rs five lakh each after their lawyer Abid Mansoob Qureshi filed an application in this regard.
