Bandh call evokes partial response, tension continues

Mysore, July 04: The bandh call given by a Hindu outfit to protest the attack on a BJP youth wing leader evoked a mixed response here on Saturday, even as tension continued in some areas in the wake of clashes sparked by the alleged desecration of a madrasa.

City transport services operated a few buses, while some private vehicles and autorickshaws plied on the roads.

A few persons have been arrested in connection with the clashes and stabbing incidents, police said, but did not give details.

Black money, Maoist threat impede electoral process: EC

New Delhi, July 04: Role of black money in elections, threat to voters from Maoists, mushroom growth of political parties and casual approach of urban voters impede the electoral process in the country, Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi has said.

“Role of black money is the biggest problem. We admit that we have failed to curb it. In the 30 days’ of the election process we cannot contain black money,” he said last night at a seminar on ‘Indian Elections 2009 – Trends and Perspectives’.

Iranian hardliner calls opposition leader US agent

Tehran, july 04: A top aide of Iran’s supreme leader has called the country’s main opposition figure a U.S. agent and accused him of committing crimes against the nation.

Prominent hardliner Hossein Shariatmadari cited “undeniable documents” linking opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi to foreign powers in a Saturday editorial in the daily Kayhan.

He called for Mousavi and former reformist president Mohammad Khatami to be tried in court for treason.

This is the first time Mousavi has been publicly called a foreign agent.

2 US troops killed in Afghanistan blast, 4 injured

Kabul, July 04: A blast outside a U.S. base in eastern Afghanistan killed two American troops and wounded four others Saturday, a military spokesman said.

The troops were attacked outside the base in eastern Paktika province, but there were no immediate details about the nature of the blast, said Tech. Sgt. Chuck Marsh, a U.S. military spokesman.

Insurgents also attacked the base with small arms fire before U.S. troops called in airstrikes on their positions, Marsh said.

City institute gets AICTE nod for MBA course

Ahmeddabad, July 04: The city-based C K Shah Vijapurwala Institute of Management on Friday said that the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the Union HRD Ministry have granted it permission to offer MBA course from the academic year beginning August 1.

Rajesh Khajuria, Director and Member-Secretary of the institute told that the B-school is affiliated to Gujarat Technological University.

The two-year full-time Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme is approved by the AICTE and the Ministry, he added.

Supervisor beats worker over salary issue; dyeing, printing units torched

Ahmeddabad, July 04: Around 500 labourers torched the dyeing and printing units at the Raghunath Silk Mills at Jolwa village in Palsana taluka in Surat district on Thursday night following a minor conflict with the factory supervisor over salary.

The workers also attacked fire brigade officials when they tried to extinguish the blaze. The police had to lob 29 teargas shells to bring the situation under control.

Two militants, soldier killed in Kupwara encounter

Srinagar, July 04: Two militants and a soldier were killed in a gunbattle in Kupwara district of North Kashmir, police said on Saturday.

The gunbattle broke out at Wadderbala forest in Zachaldara, 90 kms from Srinagar, around 11 am yesterday when a joint search party of police and Rashtriya Rifles confronted hiding militants. The hiding militants fired upon the search party and in the ensuing gunbattle which lasted nearly 24 hours, two militants and a soldier were killed.

While one militant was killed yesterday, another ultra and the army jawan were killed early on Saturday.

Reward increased on Delhi blasts militants

New Delhi, July 04: Delhi’s Police Commissioner Y. S. Dadwal on Friday enhanced the reward on three militants allegedly involved in the serial blasts in the Capital last year from Rs.1 lakh to 5 lakh and announced a reward of equal amount on alleged Lashkar-e-Taiba operations chief Abu Alkama.

The three alleged militants are Iqbal Batkal, Riyaz Batkal and Amir Raja Khan.

Abu Alkama, an alleged mastermind behind the creation of Indian Mujahideen, is responsible for the blasts in Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Uttar Pradesh, the police said.

UP govt. gives go-ahead to filing of chargesheet against Varun

Lucknow, July 04: The Uttar Pradesh government on Friday gave the green signal for filing of chargesheet in a court against BJP MP Varun Gandhi for making allegedly inflammatory speeches in Pilibhit, moving a step closer to his trial in the case.

“The government has given a go-ahead to the District Magistrate of Pilibhit to file chargesheet against Gandhi accused of delivering inflammatory speeches during Lok Sabha polls”, Secretary (Home) Mahesh Gupta told PTI.

Humid weekend in store for Delhi

New Delhi, July 04: Delhiites will face an uncomfortable weekend with high humidity levels but little rain, a met official said Saturday.

The humidity level will oscillate between 79 and 51 percent. The maximum temperature Saturday will hover around 37 degrees Celsius and the minimum will be about 28 degrees Celsius, the official said.

“The sky will mainly remain partly cloudy. Later in the day, there is possibility of rain and thundershowers,” said an official of the met department at Safdarjung.

Although the monsoon reached the capital June 29, there hasn’t been much rain.

Mamata does a balancing act

New Delhi, July 04: Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has done a good balancing act. Even while keeping her promise of presenting a pro-people budget she has initiated measures for yielding revenue and sustaining the commercial viability of the railways.

She has revisited the Tatkal scheme reducing the time factor and the charges.

To please the youth she has promised a low-cost train; urban women would now have special trains in Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata, and the unorganised labour would be given monthly season tickets of Rs. 25.

Tonnes of artificially ripened fruits seized

Chennai, July 04: The Chennai Corporation on Friday seized and destroyed five tonnes of mangoes and two tonnes of papaya that were ripened using chemical substances.

During the raids conducted on wholesalers and retailers across the city, it seized 300 kg of calcium carbide in stone and powder form. Two wholesale shops in the Koyambedu Wholesale Fruit Market were sealed by officials of the civic body’s Health Department with police assistance.

Strike will send a wrong message: Patel

New Delhi, July o4: Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel has termed “unfortunate” the decision of a section of Air India employees to go on a two-hour strike even as the national carrier is trying to tide over the worst financial crisis in its history.

The Minister feels that any kind of agitation by the employees would create a “wrong impression” among the travelling public and people would shun flying Air India.

UT multimedia programme increases middle school interest in science

Washington, July 04: Middle school students who were part of a unique science learning programme developed by The University of Texas School of Public Health showed significant increases in interest and achievement scores compared to other students, a recent study found.

Results from the study are published in the June issue of the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Academic Medicine.

London, July 04: An optical transistor, successfully crafted from a single molecule, brings researchers a step closer to an optical computer, which would be much faster and more powerful than existing counterparts.

Existing central processing units (CPUs) limit the performance of computers, for example, because they produce an enormous amount of heat.

Central forces’ deployment in Kandhamal extended

Bhubaneswar, July 04: Conceding Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s demand, the central government has extended the deployment of its paramilitary forces for two more weeks in the state’s Kandhamal district, which witnessed communal riots last year, an official said here Saturday.

The central government had Wednesday withdrawn from the region four companies of central paramilitary forces – the last of the central forces posted there to maintain peace.

Manmohan hails Mamata, says budget will make train journey enjoyable

New Delhi, July 04: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday hailed Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee for doing a “competent job” at a short notice, saying the Railway Budget will make train travel an “enjoyable experience”.

“She (Mamata) has prepared a budget which does not impose burden by way of increase in freight charges or passenger charges,” Mr. Singh told reporters outside Parliament shortly after the Railway Budget 2009-10 was presented in Lok Sabha.

Satyam set to fire another 800

Hyderabad,July 04: With little resistance coming for the laying off process, particularly from the government, Mahindra Satyam is now gearing up for yet another round of lay-offs. This time, the axe is likely to fall on senior employees at the mid-management level.

According to sources, the company has already informed the employees about its plan to shave off a ‘significant number’ of jobs.

Minor girl raped, neighbour held

Ahmedabad, July 04: A 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour on Thursday at Kalyan Dham society, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Madhavpura police station. The Madhavpura police have arrested a youth, Chirag alias Lalo (22) in the case.

According to Madhavpura police, the victim, a resident of Kalyan Dham society near Shahpur Darwaza, was alone at her house when the incident happened. Her father, a labourer, had gone out for some work.

Servant held for attack on couple

Mumbai, July 04: Borivili police on Thursday arrested a 26-year-old domestic help, who had fled with Rs1 lakh after attacking his employers, an elderly couple. Bhima Thakrulla was nabbed when he was about to cross the border to Nepal.

Thakrulla worked for Popat Shah, 73, and his wife Nirmala, 68, in their Borivili west residence for the past one year.

On June 28, when the couple’s son had gone to Lonavala with his wife and children, Thakrulla attacked Nirmala with a knife. He gagged Popat with a sari and decamped with Rs1 lakh cash kept in the safe.

State BJP too is unhappy

Mumbai: Bharatiya Janta Party’s state general secretary Vinod Tawde flayed the railway budget. “Mumbai accounts for a major chunk of passenger revenues, but there has been no announcement to improve their travel conditions.

Inspite of living in the financial capital of the country, Mumbaikars have never benefited from any of the railway budgets presented in the Congress-led regime,” he said.

Budget 2009″Mumbaikars had been since long demanding a new rail service connecting the Thane-Borivili, but this has not been done.

Jilted lover attacks dentist, arrested

Chandigarh, July 04: The Mohali police arrested a man on Friday on charges of assaulting a dentist after she refused to acknowledge his feelings for her.

A resident of Chandigarh, Pramod Bansal, allegedly barged into the victim’s cabin at a private hospital here and stabbed her with a dagger two days ago, said Investigating Officer (IO) Sub-Inspector Rajesh Kumar.

The dentist told the police that around 2.15 pm on Wednesday, Pramod forced his way into her room and attacked her without any provocation and fled.

Fire in London’s tower block kills six

London, July 04: Six people, including three children, have died in a fire in a block of flats in London, the fire brigade said late Friday.

Three children, one just three weeks old, were among the victims of the blaze in the 12-storey block on a housing estate in Camberwell, in south London.

The victims were among at least 18 people taken to hospitals in the area. At least 30 people were rescued from the building.

According to London Fire Brigade (LFB), the blaze was brought under control by about 100 firefighters.

Delhi gets 19 new trains

New Delhi, July 04: The Capital is set to get 19 new trains, including a pilot service of two new low-priced fast trains that will connect Delhi to Mumbai and Kolkata.

The Rail Budget tabled by Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday stated there will be eight new trains from the city, nine non-stop train services to other cities, and two low-priced ‘Yuva’ fast trains to connect the youth in rural hinterlands to metropolitan cities.
