Pune, July 09: While most IT companies have deferred their campus recruitment by six months, engineering students can take a breather with the off-campus recruitment to be held by IBM India in association with Federation of Training and Placement Officers (FTPO) on Friday and Saturday at Pimpri-Chinchwad College of Engineering (PCCOE).

IBM had recruited 70 out of 500 respondents in a similar off-campus drive held last year. “This year, we expect about 1,000 students for the two-day drive,” said Shitalkumar Rawandale, president, FTPO.

Degree of success

It’s raining accolades for A R Rahman. The music maestro recently made a trip to London’s prestigious Middlesex University where he was conferred an honourary doctorate from the varsity in music on Tuesday. This comes in quick succession after his Academy Award win and another doctorate that he received from Aligarh Muslim University last month.

However, this only marks the beginning as another doctorate from the Madras University should be coming soon too.

Lawyers ‘rough up’ judge in Rohini court

New Delhi, July 09: A judge was allegedly manhandled by a group of lawyers at the Rohini district courts on Wednesday. The brawl was triggered by arguments during the hearing of a divorce case when Additional District Judge (ADJ) Pankaj Gupta issued a bailable warrant to the woman seeking divorce, sources said.

Jal Board pulled up for supplying dirty water

New Delhi, July 09: Random checks carried out by municipal health inspectors have found that several pockets of Delhi are exposed to contaminated water, unfit for drinking.

Samples from Ballimaran in Chandni Chowk, slum clusters around Jama Masjid, areas in Karol Bagh, Azadpur Mandi and even Nirankari Colony — the residential area of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) near Kingsway Camp — have tested positive for faecal contamination, Health department officials have said.

Health authorities have said the impure water is behind the sudden spurt in water-borne diseases in the city.

Teachers body to recommend alternative to Yashpal proposals

New Delhi, July 08: Describing the educational reforms suggested by the Yashpal Committee as “contradictory”, the country’s largest teachers’ body on Wednesday said they would soon come up with an alternative proposal.

“The recommendations of the Yashpal Committee and the report of the National Knowledge Commission (NKC) are contradictory in many aspects,” All India Federation of Universities and College Teachers Organisation president Thomas Joseph said here.

No direct talks with Naxals: Centre

New Delhi, July 08: The Centre on Wednesday said there was no proposal to hold direct talks with Naxals but it would welcome such a dialogue between the Left wing extremists and any state government.

“There is no proposal for the Central Government to hold talks directly with the Left wing extremists,” Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Maken told Rajya Sabha today.

“State Governments have, from time to time, appealed to the Left wing extremists to abjure violence and hold talks with the government on any issues that are of concern to them…,” he said.

Health insurance scheme extended to six crore BPL families

New Delhi, July 08: The Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) is being extended to all six crore BPL families in the country during the current financial year, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Wednesday.

Minister of State for Labour and Employment Harish Rawat said a smartcard-based cashless health insurance cover of Rs 30,000 per year under the scheme has been already provided to over 49 lakh families in 18 states till June 30 this year.

In all, 25 states have initiated moves to implement it, he said.

Japan, US to hold talks on ‘nuclear umbrella’

Tokyo, July 08: The United States and Japan are planning their first official talks on the US ‘nuclear umbrella’ as early as this month, amid rising fears about stability in northeast Asia, a newspaper reported.

The issue is sensitive in Japan, which campaigns for a nuclear-weapons-free world but relies on the United States for deterrence as fears build over North Korea’s atomic programme and China’s continued defence stockpiling.

Court rejects Shiney Ahuja’s bail application

Mumbai, July 08: Observing that prima facie case had been made out against actor Shiney Ahuja for allegedly raping his domestic help, a sessions court rejected his bail plea.

Additional sessions judge D Shirsao remarked that the offence was serious and refused to accept actor’s argument that the victim’s story was “doubtful and concocted”.

The 36-year-old actor, who is currently lodged in the Arthur road jail in central Mumbai, was arrested on June 15 for allegedly raping his 18-year-old domestic maid at his residence in suburban Oshiwara.

Big B down with stomach pain

Mumbai, July 08: Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has developed a pain in the stomach much like the one he got on his last birthday.

The Big B, who was in London, arrived home a day ago, said the pain happened when he was getting set to leave from there.

“I drove straight to my doctor on arrival late last night, and after some external physical examinations, I was subjected to CT scans this morning. The results do not show anything, but the trouble exists, albeit in a much smaller scale than the last time,” Bachchan wrote on his latest blog post.

Lab team say they’ve grown human sperm from stem cells

London, July 08: Team says cells became elongated and grew tails; other researchers pour cold water on results.

Scientists claim to have created human sperm for the first time, in a breakthrough they say could lead to new treatment for male infertility.

The sperm was grown in a laboratory in Newcastle, England, from embryonic stem cells. Led by Professor Karim Nayernia, researchers developed a method of growing early-stage sperm from human embryonic stem cells by using retinoic acid, a vitamin A derivative.

Team India returns home from a successful Caribbean tour

Mumbai, July 08: A triumphant Indian team returned home from a successful Caribbean tour, winning its fifth consecutive one day international series, in the wee hours here on early Wednesday.

The squad boarded a connecting flight from London, which landed at approximately 0100 hours at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

Most of the players barring — skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, all-rounder Abhishek Nair and batsman Rohit Sharma — managed to avoid the media glare and sneaked through the backdoor.

Two killed in LPG cylinder explosion in Delhi

New Delhi, July 08: Two persons were charred to death when a cooking gas cylinder exploded in their residence here, fire brigade officials said on Wednesday.

The incident took place in Aman Vihar area at around 11.50 pm on Tuesday night.

Gauri Shankar (33) and Kallu (30) suffered serious burn injuries when the LPG cylinder exploded in the residence.

They were rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial hospital where doctors declared them brought dead.

Iran one to three years away from nuclear bomb: Mullen

Washington, July 08: Iran is just one to three years away from acquiring a nuclear bomb and the clock is fast ticking for the international community to prevent this from happening, a top U.S. military official has said.

“Where we are challenged here is the timeframe — which depending on who you talk to, the estimates of when they would develop a nuclear weapon and again based on both your assumptions and who you talk to it’s been one to three years.It’s sort of in that kind of timeframe,” Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen told a Washington-based think tank.

Air India flight aborted due to ‘tyre glitch’

Dubai, July 08: An Air India plane headed for Thiruvananthapuram was grounded in Sharjah after its tyre burst seconds before taking off, sending the 172 passengers on board into panic.

The Boeing 737-800 Air India Express flight LX536, which was scheduled to leave at 12.10 pm (local time) on Tuesday, was delayed by nine hours after the “tyre glitch” forced the pilot to abort the take-off.

While no injuries were reported, the passengers were sent into panic by the incident. They were evacuated and transferred to the waiting lounge, officials at the airport said.

Five killed, three injured in accident

Solapur, July 08: Five persons, including a seven-year-old child was killed and three others injured in a road accident near Ule village on Solapur-Osmanabad road, police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place on Tuesday night when a car in which they were travelling collided head-on with a truck, they said.

The deceased have been identified as Mohsin Kazi (21), Balaji Barkul (35), Yash Barkul (7), Yogesh Tawate (16) and Ashok Shinde (32), they said.

The injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital, they said.

Haj pilgrims asked to pay more as Rupee falls against Saudi Riyal

New Delhi, July 08: Most of the Haj pilgrims may not even know the complexities of the currency movement but have been asked to cough up Rs 5,000 more for the pilgrimage they had completed last year, a CPI(M) Member in the Rajya Sabha said.

Raising the issue during zero hour, Moinul Hassan said the Mumbai Haj Committee which is managed “unprofessionally” had sent an unsigned letter seeking extra sum from the Hajis.

The reason cited by the committee for extra money related to depreciation of the Rupee against Saudi Riyal, Mr. Hassan said.

Former Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid dead

New Delhi, July 08: Former Shahi Imam of historic Jama Masjid Maulana Syed Abdullah Bukhari, who was ailing for the past few months, passed away here this morning.

He was 87.

The prominent religious leader breathed his last at around 9:30 am, a statement from the present Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari’s secretariat said.

The 12th Shahi Imam of the historic Jama Masjid, Maulana Syed Abdullah Bukhari is the father of present Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari. His father Maulana Syed Hameed Bukhari was the 11th Shahi Imam.

Taj Mahal foundation stable and secure: govt

New Delhi, July 08: The foundation and the structure of the Taj Mahal is stable and secure, the Lok Sabha was informed on Wednesday.

“Scientific studies at the behest of Archaeological Survey of India on various structural aspects of the Taj Mahal by Survey of India, Dehradun and Central Building Research Institute, Roorkee have shown that the foundation of the monument as well as its structure are stable and secure,” Minister of State for Planning V Narayanasamy said.

6,540 Indians imprisoned across the world

New Delhi, July 08: A total of 6,540 Indian prisoners, including 121 women, are incarcerated in jails of various countries across the world, the Lok Sabha was informed on Wednesday.

The Government of India, through its missions abroad, along with the foreign governments is making all possible efforts to provide necessary assistance to Indians lodged in foreign jails, Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor said in a written reply.

IAF to have 230 Su-30 MKI fighters by 2015: Antony

New Delhi, July 08: Government plans to more than double the number of Russian-made Sukhoi 30 MKI fighter aircraft in Indian Air Force fleet to 230 by 2015, Defence Minister A K Antony informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

Replying to supplementaries during the Question Hour, Antony said since 1996 IAF has procured 98 Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter aircraft.

“By 2015, we plan to have a fleet of 230 Sukhoi fighter aircraft,” he said.

US drone attack in Pak’s Taliban stronghold kills 8

Islamabad, July 08: A US drone struck a Taliban stronghold, in the second such strike within 24 hours, targeting a training centre in Pakistan’s volatile South Waziristan region on Wednesday killing at least 10 militants.

The drone fired several missiles at a training centre run by militants loyal to Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan chief Baitullah Mehsud in Karwan Manza area, TV news channels reported.

At least five militants were also injured in the attack. The injured militants, some of them in a critical condition, were taken to a nearby hospital.
