No attack on Indians in Afghanistan: Govt

New Delhi, July 11: Government on Saturday rubbished a Pakistani media report which claimed that six Indians had been killed in a terror attack in Afghanistan.

Speaker suspends 11 Cong MLAs till Tuesday

Ahmedabad, July 11: Assembly Speaker Ashok Bhatt suspended 11 Congress MLAs from the House for three days till Tuesday following an uproar over the spurious liquor tragedy in Ahmedabad, on Friday. The Opposition members were suspended for the second consecutive day during the ongoing Budget Session.

The rest of the Opposition members, all dressed in black, walked out after the House marshals lifted out the suspended members for rushing towards the Well.

Congress MLAs, BJP workers clash outside Assembly

Ahmedabad, July 11: Violent scenes were witnessed outside the state Assembly building on Friday, when Opposition Congress MLAs — all dressed in black to protest against the Ahmedabad hooch tragedy — clashed with a group of BJP workers over the issue. The timely intervention of the police prevented the situation from taking an ugly turn.

The incident occurred when a group of BJP youth workers from Ahmedabad attempted to counter the slogan-shouting Congress MLAs who were returning after staging a protest programme near Mahatma Gandhi’s statue outside the Assembly building.

Now, panel to monitor fees in schools

Kolkata, July 11: To do away with steep hike in fees in private English-medium schools in the state, the School Education department will form a committee to monitor the fees structure in schools.

To discuss the issue, a meeting was held between School Education Minister Partha De and the representatives of nearly 20 reputed English-medium schools in the state on Friday.

Govt brings LPG loophole for old vehicles

Kolkata, July 11: Advocate General Bolai Roy on Friday submitted before the Calcutta High Court that 15-year-old public vehicles should be allowed to run in the city after being converted to LPG mode. He added that the vehicles would have to obtain a “certificate of fitness” from the transport department before continuing with their operations.

The state Environment department had issued a notification on July 17, 2008, banning public vehicles over 15 year-old like bus, minibus, lorry and taxi from running in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area from March 31, 2009.

7/11 accused invokes RTI for update on terror trials

Bomb hoax at Crompton Greaves office

Mumbai, July 11: A day after the IB warned of possible terrorist attacks on the western line leading to a security beef up at Churchgate and Andheri stations, a bomb hoax was reported in central Mumbai on Friday.

The office of the Managing Director, Crompton Greaves, at Kanjurmarg received a call at 10.30 am on Friday informing about a bomb at the company’s Worli office. At around 11 am, a call was received on helpline number 100 informing about a bomb on the first floor of Crompton Greaves building.

Get back to work today or face expulsion, resident doctors told

Mumbai, july 11: The government on Friday issued showcause notices to resident doctors on strike, asking them to resume work by 2 pm on Saturday or face expulsion from their respective medical colleges.

The notice is being sent individually to the 2,993 doctors on strike, through the Director of Medical Education and Research (DMER). “Deans of colleges will serve the notices on the doctors,” said Dr Pravin Shinghare, deputy director, DMER.

City gets its fourth swine flu victim

Pune, July 11: A 16-year-old boy from Pune who stayed in the US for around 10 months and returned on July 8 is the fourth victim of swine flu in the city.

The teenager was admitted to Naidu Hospital on Thursday evening, said Dr Sudhir Pachpute, in-charge of the hospital. The National Institute of Virology (NIV) report stated that his throat swab had tested positive for the H1N1 virus, he said.

Dengue fear looms amid scanty rain

Pune, July 11: The practice of storing water in the summer months owing to water cut and absence of rainfall in June has led to a rise in number of dengue cases in the district this year. While the sensitive pockets in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad are Wadgaonsheri and Bhosari, a fair share of cases has been reported from places like Wai near Mahabaleshwar.

Teen couple murdered in Meerut

Lucknow, July 11: A teen couple were hacked to death after they were caught in a compromising position in the girl’s house in Meerut on Friday morning.

Four of the girl’s cousins were named in the case and one of them was arrested in the evening.

The incident occurred at Kina Nagar village in Bhawanpur, said Sharad Sachan, Meerut Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural).

Mayawati wants CBI investigation in missing Babri papers, files FIR

Lucknow, July 11: The state government recommended a CBI investigation on Friday into the case of 23 missing files pertaining to the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute.

Chief Minister Mayawati, who made the announcement, said: “This is a serious issue. Hence, my government has decided to hand over the investigation to the CBI.”

Earlier in the day, the Home Department lodged an FIR with the Hazratganj Police Station regarding the missing files under Section 409 of the IPC, which deals with criminal breach of trust by a public servant. No one was named in the FIR.

HC: special bench to probe lawyers who beat up city judge

New Delhi, July 11: The Delhi High Court on Friday issued contempt notices against the four lawyers who had allegedly assaulted an Additional District Judge (ADJ) inside the courtroom in Rohini district courts on Wednesday.

The High Court has also constituted a three-judge special bench to take up the case.

Wife, friend arrested for businessman’s murder in West Delhi

New Delhi, July 11: day after a West Delhi businessman was found stabbed, his wife and her close friend were arrested on Friday for the murder.

The suspects are victim Jagmohan Singh’s wife Sumit Kaur, 28, and one Puneet, 31, her friend who killed Singh on Kaur’s directions, the police today said.

Singh, 32, was found dead late Wednesday night at his Rajouri garden house.

Today, after arresting Puneet, the police claimed that he had confessed to having committed the murder — Kaur had allegedly promised to pay him for it.

Building crumbling, govt says close Urdu-medium school

New Delhi, July 11: The Ballimaran ward in the Walled City will soon lose its only Urdu-medium school.

As per a recent Delhi government order, Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Chashma Building, should be merged with another Hindi-medium school and students transferred en masse. Reason: the building, 52 years old, is no longer considered safe, with the lime-yellow structure crumbling at many places. The authorities thus proposes to merge it with the Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Kinari Bazar, Gali Barafwali.

Twin-death in S Delhi: Man stabs friend, dies while trying to escape

New Delhi, July 11: Satvinder Singh and Ashwini Singh Tang, both 37 years, were childhood friends turned business partners.

But a squabble on early Friday afternoon — allegedly over profit sharing — rang down the curtain.

On Friday afternoon, Ashwini Singh Tang allegedly killed Satvinder Singh, and in his attempt to flee the scene, fell to his death, police sources said.

Ebola virus found in Philippine pigs for first time

Washington, July 10: A form of ebola virus has been detected in pigs for the first time, raising concerns it could mutate and threaten humans, scientists report.

Reston ebolavirus has only been seen in monkeys and humans previously and, unlike other types of ebola, it is not known to cause illness in people.

The discovery of REBOV in pigs in the Philippines is reported in Friday’s edition of the journal Science.

Researchers say it is theoretically possible for the virus to mutate in pigs into a form that might sicken people.

Megawati rejects Indonesian Presidential Election ‘landslide’

Jakarta, July 10: Indonesian opposition leader Megawati Sukarnoputri’s campaign team refused to concede defeat on Friday to an apparent landslide election win by incumbent President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

The Megawati camp alleges widespread fraud in the Wednesday vote, including millions of fake voters, after a provisional official count giving Yudhoyono 61.88 percent of the vote to Megawati’s 28.57 percent.

“It seems that SBY has the compelling urge to be congratulated,” Megawati campaign spokesman Aria Bima said, referring to the President by his nickname.

Ancient Babylon site damaged by military activity

Washington, July 10: The ancient site of Babylon, which is home to the Hanging Gardens and is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, has been significantly damaged due to its use as a military base by coalition forces in Iraq from 2003-2004, a UNESCO report has said.

ISI building’s attacker identified as Baitullah’s close aide

Lahore, July 10: Punjab Police on Friday identified a terrorist who carried out the suicide car bomb attack on the Inter-Services Intelligence headquarters in this eastern Pakistani city as son of Tehreek-e-Taliban Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud’s personal bodyguard.

The attacker was identified as Abi Armaghan alias Abu Talha, an Uzbek national. Armaghan’s father, a bodyguard of Baitullah Mehsud, left Afghanistan after the Afghan war and settled in the South Waziristan tribal region, officials said.

Pigs at risk from people as new flu spreads

London, July 10: There is a growing risk that pigs will catch the new H1N1 flu strain — commonly known as swine flu — from humans, German researchers said on Thursday.

Widespread transmission from people to pigs could mix up virus strains further, leading to unpredictable changes in the disease.

There have already been a handful of suspected cases of humans passing the current pandemic H1N1 virus to swine. The latest German research confirms it is infectious to pigs and can spread rapidly.

AIDS stigma: 8 HIV +ve students expelled from school

Latur, July 10: In a pointer to the social stigma that is still attached to AIDS, eight HIV positive students of district council school at Hasegaon village in Latur district of Maharashtra were expelled from school due to the strong opposition from other students and their parents.

The students were expelled after 140 of the total 230 students’ boycotted classes as they fear that they may contract the disease from the positive children.

In fact, for the past few days, this school in the Marathwada region has been flooded with requests by parents for transfer certificates (TC).

Kasab trained by Pak marines, had local help

New Delhi, July 10: Muhammad Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone captured terrorists of the audacious Mumbai terror attack, was trained by Pakistan Marines, an elite unit of the Pakistan Navy.

In its latest issue, The Week quoting Kasab’s interrogation report by an intelligence agency said he and nine others who struck Mumbai last November were taught combat techniques by the Pakistan Marines after being extensively trained by the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) at its various camps.
