Clearance operations on at Metro mishap site

New Delhi, July 14: Debris clearance operations continued at the Delhi Metro accident site in South Delhi even as one-way traffic in the area was thrown open on Tuesday to facilitate movement of vehicles.

Cranes, which toppled yesterday leaving six injured, have been removed from the accident spot.

Heavy rains throw life out of gear in Mumbai

Mumbai, July 14: Normal life was thrown out of gear in the city on Tuesday due to heavy overnight rains that led to severe water logging in many parts and badly disrupted road, rail and air traffic.

The heavy down pour accompanied by gusty winds since last evening led to traffic snarls at various places.

Suburban trains were also running late by 30-45 minutes due to waterlogging on the tracks.

Central railways was running 30 to 45 minutes late while Harbour line and Western lines are running 10 to 15 minutes, the railways said.

PM for monsoon contingency plan; wheat export banned

New Delhi, July 14: India on Monday reimposed a ban on wheat exports and set up a ministerial group to ensure food security- on a day when the Prime Minister reviewed crop situation as also Monsoon, which the weatherman says will improve this week.

“The briefing that India Meteorological Department made this morning (on monsoon situation, I can say the) entire week will be a good week. If this prediction is correct, then I can definitely say we are out of trouble,” Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar told reporters.

Priyan has signed Trisha for the Hindi movie “Khatta Meetha” opposite Bollywood star Akshay Kumar.

Pakistan 178-1 in the 2nd innings

Colombo, july 14: A maiden century from debutant opener Fawad Alam on Monday helped Pakistan steal the momentum to lead by 28 runs in the second test against Sri Lanka.

Pakistan overhauled a 150-run, first-innings deficit and finished the second day on 178-1 at P. Sara Oval.

Alam was on 102 from 153 balls, including six boundaries and a six. He pulled left-arm spinner Rangana Herath for a six and the next ball pushed the ball to third-man for a couple to reach his 100.

“I can’t explain how I feel but I am absolutely delighted,” Alam said.

Oil up near $60 on weaker dollar, Nigeria attack

Abuja, july 14: Oil prices rose above $60 a barrel on Monday, halting last week’s falling trend, as investors turned to commodities for protection against a weaker dollar and after attacks on oil facilities in Nigeria.

By mid-afternoon in Europe, benchmark crude for August delivery was up 19 cents to $60.08 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. On Friday, the contract fell 52 cents to settle at $59.89.

Earlier Monday, prices fell as low as $58.88, as investors continued to fret about global economic growth and crude demand.

IDBI Bank employees to go on strike on July 15

Mumbai, July 14: Employees of IDBI Bank would go on strike on July 15 to press for higher salary package.

The bank authorities have received of a strike notice stating that a section of officers and non-officers propose to go on strike on July 15 and indefinite strike from July 29, IDBI Bank informed the Bombay Stock Exchange.

Mahindra Satyam allots 45,222 shares under stock options

Mumbai, July 14: Mahindra Satyam on Monday said it has allotted 45,222 shares to its employees under the stock option plans of the company.

“The board has allotted 45,222 shares under the stock option plans of the company,” it said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange.

Post allotment, the paid-up share capital of the company stands at Rs 235.10 crore from earlier Rs 235.09 crore, the filing added.

EU to send 100-member team to observe Afghan polls

Brussels, July 14: The European Union (EU) will send a 100-member team to Afghanistan to monitor the presidential and provincial council elections scheduled to take place Aug 20, according to a statement Monday.

The EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) include the 17 core team experts who are already in Afghanistan and will be joined in due course by other observers, EuAsiaNews reported, citing a statement by the European Commission, the executive branch of the 27-member grouping.

Govt. may give certificates to units not employing child labour

New Delhi,July 14: The Government on Monday said it would examine a suggestion to issue certificates to manufacturing units that do not use child labour.

“I will examine the suggestion,” Labour Minister Mallikarujn Kharge said during Question Hour, when a member suggested issuing certificates to manufacturing units that do not use child labour.

He said according to 2001 census, the number of working children in the age-group of 5-14 years was 1.26 crore, of which about 12 lakh were working in hazardous processes.

Sabharwal murder case: Accused released from jail

Nagpur, July 14: The six accused in the Prof. H.S. Sabharwal murder case, who were acquitted by a local court earlier in the day, were released from the Central Prison here on Monday night.

The six activists of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) — Vimal Tomar, Pankaj Mishra, Vimal Rajoria, Shashiranjan Akela, Hemant Dubey and Sudhir Yadav — were facing murder charges under various sections of IPC.

PDP: Serious efforts needed to find solution to Kashmir issue

Srinagar, July 14: The Peoples’ Democratic Party on Monday said there was a need for serious and sustained efforts to find a permanent solution of the Kashmir issue.

“A final and amicable solution alone can prevent recurrence of the kind of unrest that is witnessed by the state at present,” PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed told a large gathering of party workers at Pahalgam, 100 km from here, on Monday.

He charged the ruling National Conference-Congress government with using cheap tactics to target the PDP through its propaganda.

CBSE has proposals to make Class X board exams optional

New Delhi, July 14: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has proposals to make the Class-X board exam optional and allow internal assessment in which the pattern of questions would be similar to those in the board exam, the Lok Sabha was informed on Monday.

To ensure that the quality of education is not affected, the CBSE would ask the schools to complete the required course of study of Class-IX and X as per the Board’s scheme of studies and follow prescribed textbooks, Minister of State for HRD D. Purandeswari said in a written reply.

Maoists attack police camp in Lalgarh

Lalgarh,July 14: Maoists attacked a camp of joint forces at Dharampur, about 15 km from here, on Monday night despite presence of security personnel.

The ultras attacked the camp of the State police and para-military forces in West Midnapore district and fired about 20 rounds, IG Western rage, Kuldip Singh said.

Personnel from the force retaliated and the Maoists retreated after an exchange of fire for sometime, Mr. Singh said.

District Magistrate N.S. Nigam said no casualty has been reported from any side.

Govt not to ban export of meat

New Delhi, July 14: The government on Monday ruled out banning the export of meat and said doing so would not be in the interest of the livestock sector.

“Considering the overall development of livestock sector, the government is not in favour of ban on the export of meat,” Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jyotiraditya Scindia said in a written reply to Lok Sabha.

Mr. Scindia said representations were received from Maharaja Kumarapal Jeevadaya Trust, Munoth House and Dhahraj Baid Jain College for imposing ban on the export of meat.

AICC mulling to hold meetings before Assembly polls

New Delhi, July 14: With Assembly elections in three states, including Maharashtra and Haryana, scheduled soon, a meeting of the AICC is expected in Mumbai by September.

Party sources said that the leadership was toying with the idea and no final decision has been taken so far.

If the AICC meeting is held, it will be the first such session of the Congress after the Lok Sabha elections.

The Assembly elections in Maharashtra are scheduled by October and therefore the plan is to hold the meeting before announcement of elections there.

Centre suggests talks on Gorkhaland issue

New Delhi, july 14: Even as a bandh crippled life in Darjeeling, the Centre on Monday suggested holding of tripartite meeting with the West Bengal government and the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) on August 24 on the demand of creating a separate Gorkha state.

The Centre has asked the state government to communicate the proposal to the GJM and convey back the response to it.

Dalit man commits suicide

Lucknow, July 14: A Dalit gram pradhan committed suicide following alleged harassment by some influential persons of his village — Paniyara in Maharajganj district — on Monday.

Sudarshan Prasad (35) was found dead in a field around 7 am. Primary investigation indicated that he had consumed sulphas tablets. A notebook, carrying his suicide note and naming four persons, was recovered from the spot. The postmortem report is awaited.

Basu fine, leaders line up at hospital

Kolkata, july 14: The condition of veteran CPM leader Jyoti Basu, who was admitted to hospital on Sunday morning, is stable. The seven-member panel of doctors who have been monitoring his condition for the last 24 hours said that he was doing much better on Monday than when he was admitted.

Basu had been admitted to the AMRI on Sunday after he complained of breathlessness and fainted. Although Basu had a liquid diet on Sunday, doctors said he was given a soft diet of fish and rice on Monday.

Mother and son killed hostage first, demanded ransom later

Mumbai, July 14: A struggling youth, aided by his mother, kidnapped a boy in Andheri, murdered him and then made a ransom demand of Rs 15 lakh, the police said on Monday after arresting mother, son and a cousin.

They had always meant to kill the boy because he would have identified them; he lived in the same building as the youth and his mother, the Crime Branch said after cracking the February crime.

Nepal govt survives vote in Parliament

Kathmandu, July 13: Nepal’s two-month-old CPN-UML government survived a scare when a vote in Parliament on its annual policies and programmes was approved by a wafer-thin majority in the 601-strong Assembly.

In the Constituent Assembly vote on Sunday, 305 members voted in favour of the government’s policies and programmes while 251 MPs, including Maoists, opposed them.

The government managed to get just four votes more than the required 301 for the endorsement of its policies by Parliament.
