Manager held for accidental death of man in theatre

Chennai, June 15: Police on Saturday arrested the manager of the cinema hall where a 40-year-old man died last week when he tripped and fell on an iron
rod protruding from the seat. He has been booked for negligence. Hunt is also on for the owner of the theatre who is said to be in Singapore.

The identify of the man, who died in the theatre last Thursday, is yet to be established. “We have printed pamphlets with the victim’s photograph and circulated them in the Kothavalchavadi area to trace his identity,” inspector G Hari Kumar of Kothavalchavadi police station told The Times Of India.

TOI had earlier carried reports on how the committee headed by veteran bureaucrat Ram Pradhan had given the Mumbai police a clean chit, saying their actions during 26/11 had to be viewed in the context of the “war-like situation”.

Mumbai, June 13: Director Kabir Khan is ready with his second directorial venture “New York” and says the film highlights prejudices against certain nationalities and religions across the world after the 9/11 attacks in the US.

“‘New York’ is based on part of the political canvas of 9/11, but it speaks of prejudices after the great human tragedy. It is a definite and very relevant subject about post-9/11 prejudices that have increased after the attacks,” Khan told IANS in a telephonic interview from Mumbai.

Chennai, June 13: A mysterious death eventually turned out to be murder. Basing their investigation on the postmortem report, suburban police arrested six persons for the killing of P Sakthivel (29), whose body was found on the roadside near Kudrathur on December 24 last year. Sakthivel was murdered for eloping with the daughter of his employer. Police arrested the girl’s uncle Thyagarajan (30), his friend Poyyamozhi (40), and Senthi (22), Murugan (28), Velu (30) and Ramesh (22) who were hired for the deed.

74-yr-old kills wife, grandchildren look on

Bangalore, June 13 : A 74-year-old retired defence officer murdered his wife by assaulting her with a crow bar, even as she was playing with their 10-month-old grandchild and their seven-year-old granddaughter was crying.

Soon after assaulting Rosylin, 58, K V Benny drank phenyl and tried to commit suicide. He is now recovering in hospital.

Washington, June 13: Now it’s storm in a coffee cup. Though a cup of coffee might help you beat drowsiness, a new research suggests that caffeine might hinder your short-term recall of certain words.

Caffeine made it harder for people to find a word that they already knew — the “tip-of-the-tongue” phenomenon, BBC News portal reported on Friday.

Valerie Lesk, of the International School for Advanced Studies in Italy, believes caffeine improves alertness by shutting down other brain pathways. This makes it harder to recall words, she says in Behavioural Psychology.

We were told that he was busy with the election campaign, after which he was going abroad. We could only meet him after he returned. But unfortunately, he won’t be doing the campaign.”

Kolkata, June 13: The Trinamool Congress and the West Bengal administration were Friday seemingly headed for a standoff, with the state home secretary threatening to use force to lift the opposition party’s siege of a police station and a road in East Midnapore’s troublespot Khejuri and Trinamool MP Subhendu Adhikari daring him to do so.
The Trinamool, which blockaded the police station protesting against the arrest of 14 of its members onthe charge of rioting, announced it would organise a public boycott of policemen if their members were not given bail.

Baby dies after being forgotten in car by father

Mexico City, June 13:A nine-month-old baby suffocated to death inside a car in the Mexican city of Saltillo, after his father forgot him there for seven hours, the Mexican daily La Vanguardia reported Friday.

The incident happened Thursday in Saltillo, about 850 km north of Mexico City.

The man realised what had happened when – at the end of his working day – he went to the day care centre to pick up his son and was told that he had never got there in the morning.

“I had him in my car, I forgot to bring him!” the man reportedly said.

Striking medicos suffer wrath of stranded motorists

Hyderabad, June 13: Junior doctors of Gandhi Hospital who intensified their protests on the third day of their strike on Friday tasted the wrath of motorists who took strong objection to the medicos blocking the road in front of the hospital on Friday.

Motorists, who were stranded because of the doctors staging a sit-in on the road, vent their anger at the striking employees for trying to disrupt traffic flow. Total chaos prevailed as traffic was blocked up to Musheerabad crossroads and beyond.
