West Indies revel in playing at home: Dyson

Kingston, June 25 : West Indies coach John Dyson said his resurgent team will be more dangerous at home turf and will play an aggressive brand of cricket in the One-day seeries against India starting on Friday.

Dyson said they have chalked out strategies to tackle key Indian players, though he admitted the new members in the side could spring a surprise.

India would take field in the first of the four ODIs at Sabina Park here Friday, with key players like Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan missing from the series.

Cabinet status for Nandan Nilekani

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has appointed the Infosys Chief Nandan Nilekani as the Chairman of National Authority for Unique Identity.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni said the new authority will function under the planning commission, and Nilekani will be enjoying cabinet status.

Ms Soni said the authority will have the responsibility to lay down plans and policies to implement the Unique Identification Scheme and will operate the unique identification number database for the citizen’s of the country.

New Delhi, June 25: Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Thursday sent a “Chadar” (holy cloth) to the shrine of Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer on the occasion of annual ‘Urs’.

Senior party leaders who would carry the Chadar arrived at Gandhi’s residence and touched the holy cloth, symbolising their participation in the offering.

All visa seekers to be photographed and fingerprinted

Jeddha, June 25: Saudi Arabia will introduce fingerprinting and full-face digital photographs for visa applicants next year as part of its efforts to strengthen its security, prevent identity theft and combat terrorism.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced yesterday that it was calling for tenders from specialized international firms to set up a network of centers to provide biometric services to people applying for visas to the Kingdom.

Washington, June 25: The governor of the US state of South Carolina, who had been missing for a week, finally turned up Wedensday and admitted to an affair with an Argentinian woman.

Mark Sanford, a Republican, vanished June 18 without telling either his family or staff where he was headed. In a press conference after his return Wednesday morning, Sanford said he went to Buenos Aires to end an affair with an Argentinian woman.

“The bottom line is this: I’ve been unfaithful to my wife,” Sanford said with tears in his eyes. “I hurt my wife, I hurt my boys.”

230 acres of Wakf land didn’t get the compenstion amount

Hyderabad, June 25: The Andhra Pradesh State Wakf Board was yet to get the due compensation for its 230 acres of prime land in Visakhapatnam allotted to the two pubic sector companies Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd and the National Thermal Power Corporation.

It was part of the 5307 acres of land under the Dargah of Hazrat Ishaque Madani, after whom the city was initially named as Ishaquepatanam and later it became Visakhapatnam

New Delhi, June 25: Uzma Naheed comes from a family of the founders of Darul Uloom Deoband. She is a member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and has been working for the upliftment of the Muslim women in India and abroad.

‘Harassed for dowry’ woman jumps to death from Ghaziabad mall

Ghaziabad, June 25: A 23-year-old married woman jumped to death from the third floor of a mall on the Delhi-Ghaziabad border Wednesday afternoon, police said, suspecting it to be a “case of dowry-harassment” by her in-laws driving her to commit suicide.
Saraswati had gone to the East Delhi Mall (EDM) in Kaushambi Towers with her husband Dhirendra Kumar, a property dealer of Bhovapur locality in Ghaziabad.

Over 60 killed in Baghdad market blast

Baghdad, June 25: More than 60 people were killed and at least 150 wounded Wednesday when a bomb exploded at a crowded market here, media reports said.
The explosion, which took place in the Maridi market in eastern Sadr City area of the Iraqi capital, left 62 people dead and 150 injured, security sources told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani “vehemently condemns the attack”, according to a statement from his office.

The bomb was planted in a motorbike, security sources told DPA. Earlier reports said the bomb was concealed under a vegetable cart.
