U.S. obesity rates continue to climb

Washington, July 02: Twenty-six states in the United States saw a rise in adult obesity rates during the past year while there was no decrease in any other state, newly-released figures showed.

Meanwhile, the number of obese and overweight children has now climbed to 30 percent in 30 states, according to findings in an annual report on obesity in America, released on Wednesday by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Over 80% of Pakistanis view Taliban as threat to country: Poll

Islamabad, July 02: More than 80 percent of Pakistanis view the Taliban as a critical threat to the country, according to an opinion poll released Wednesday, marking a major rise in public support behind the government’s campaign against the militants.

The turn in public mood is a boost to the military in its offensive against the insurgency. Pakistan’s army has been battling militants in the Swat Valley in the country’s northwest, a campaign that has driven some two million civilians from their homes since April, news reports said.

Sana’a, July 02: The Yemen Airways plane that crashed off the Comoros islands with 153 people on board did not issue a distress signal or report any mechanical problems, a company official said Wednesday.

‘Aviation authorities in the Comoros informed us that the Moroni Airport control did not receive a distress signal from the pilot,’ Hassan al-Houthi, head of the technical department of the Yemenia told reporters in Sana’a.

World Bank spending at record levels during global crisis

Washington, July 02: The World Bank Wednesday said it spent a record $58.8 billion on loans, grants, guarantees and social projects over the last year to help poor countries steer through a dramatic global recession.

The development bank said its budget jumped 54 percent between July 2008 and June 30 from a year earlier and is now at the highest level in its 60-year history.

The money keeps developing countries from cutting back on social programmes, and World Bank President Robert Zoellick said he expected the demand to remain high as the economic crisis continues through 2010.

Arnold declares fiscal emergency in California

Sacramento, July 02: California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger Wednesday declared a fiscal emergency as lawmakers failed to pass a budget to close the state’s $24.3 billion budget gap.

The emergency means that the state may start issuing IOU’s instead of checks as soon as Wednesday. Schwarzenegger also ordered state workers to take a third unpaid day of leave every month, to help save the largest state in the US some $1 billion annually.

US stocks rise after completing best quarter since 2003

New York, July 02: US stocks climbed higher Wednesday on slightly rosier prospects for manufacturing and housing, a day after investors celebrated the best quarter on Wall Street since 2003.

The stock market was buoyed by figures showing the manufacturing sector shrank at its slowest pace in 10 months, the latest sign that the US economy is stabilizing.

The Institute for Supply Management’s index climbed in June to 44.8. Any figure below 50 indicates a contraction.
